Hobbit before Lord of the Rings. Extended Editions (EEs) if possible (they make a hell of a difference).
Order:
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (EE adds 13 minutes)
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (EE adds 25 minutes)
The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies (EE reported to add 30 minutes, out next year)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (EE adds 30 minutes)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (EE adds 40 minutes)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (EE adds 50 minutes)
I'll stress again, the Extended Editions are absolutely worth it and clarify a lot of plot points which might not be as clear in the standard Theatrical versions.

I disagree. WatCH in order of release. First lord of the rings then the hobbit.
The hobbit movies reuse some ideas from the original trilogy that will cheapen them later.
Watch lotr first.

They also have bookends that only make sense in a context where you've seen The Lord of the Rings first.

Just came back from seeing it in IMAX 3D(24fps.) I thought it was enjoyable, but what bothered me was the fact that it really felt like the extended third act of a larger film, which in context is the actuality considering the fact that they split a book the size of The Hobbit in 3 films.
The film has some great moments, but structurally I found it to be the worst of the three films. I think it's definitely better when viewed directly or soon after viewing the first two films before it due to its structure.

with Smaug attacking the village and getting killed to be a rather weird start of the film. It really felt like it belonged at the end of the second film, with the third film opening to its aftermath rather than like they literally cut in the middle of a sequence.
Might revisit it in IMAX 3D HFR later on, but I'm not sure about it yet.

I'd gladly take a CG update but otherwise the LOTR films are great as is.
Not very hopeful for the Hobbit 3 but I'll likely still see it at least twice.

Yeah, agreed. Came out thinking this was a self-indulgent mess. But my friend seemed to really enjoy it.
Just saw it. Don't really know how I feel. Some scenes were mind numbingly bad, the CGI was a overused again, and every scene with the humans in the city looked like a really poor soap opera. But when it focused on the dwarfs and elves the movie looked a lot better and the actors performance were much better. The last hour was by far the best.
I think I rank it last in the hobbit trilogy. But I actually enjoyed the first and second quite a lot.

On a scale of 1-10 this was a 6 for me. I'd rank the two others as strong 7's. The Lord of the rings is: 10,8,9 (extended editions).

the worst part and completely unnecessary, which I have no idea how managed to get past the clipping room, was all the scenes with the (can't even remember his name) guy who was next in command in the city. Holy crap that maybe the worst scenes since Toby went "to cool for school" in Spider-Man 3

I just got back from watching it. I loved it. I'll be going to the marathon on monday as well.
The LOTR trilogy will always be better than The Hobbit one in my mind, but they're not bad by a longshot.
This is pretty much the last visit to Middle Earth in a long, long time unless the Tolkien estate sells the right to film parts of The Silmarillion.
I'll mainly go and watch this movie to say goodbye to Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Saruman (Christopher Lee). Truly legendary actors and if I'm alive when the inevitable remakes are made I don't think anyone will ever be able to beat their performances as those characters.
I expect that tears will be shed as the credits roll.

Lol, I thought that guy and his scenes were hilarious.
Especially when he disguised himself as an old woman.
All the Alfrid scenes are indeed hilarious. I felt he never overstayed his welcome tbh.
The battle itself is about 40 minutes of the 2 hour, 20 minute movie. There's something in there for everyone.

Regardless of whether the Hobbit lives up to the original LotR films (personally I feel it doesn't), this is going to be the last film depicting Middle-Earth on the big screen. Definitely will be there, hopefully Day 1.

I didn't need the Hobbit movies to be as grand because they're the first three, the first half of the story. I think stories like this should get bigger and better as they go, and I think the first two have been really excellent-- just not of the same scale. But that feels right to me.

I guess I'm more looking for timing haha. There have been many good blu ray deals I have ignored because I refuse to buy any more LOTR dvds until I can have all 6 in one package.
In about 3-5 months, the Theatrical version of this one will be out on DVD/Blu-ray, presumably with a Theatrical boxset of all the Hobbits.
There may be a 6 film boxset of the Theatrical Hobbits and LOTR at this point, I personally doubt that though.
Then a few months later, will be the EE version of this film. I'm assuming a trilogy boxset of the EE Hobbits will come then too.
I'm thinking the "ultimate" boxset of the EE Hobbits and EE LOTR will come in 2016, presumably with features they've been holding back like the bloopers, and perhaps further Extended versions of LOTR, as they've admitted there are even more never-before-seen footage stashed away.
Saw it last night, 3D but not HFR. So for reference I really enjoy The Hobbit series so far, obviously not as good as LOTR, but they aren't the Star Wars prequel level bad that people make them out to be. Anyway, it was by far my favorite of the 3 movies. Now that I can see the entire story from beginning to end, it really elevates the the two previous movies even more for me. I noticed there were quite a few scenes from the trailers that are not in the movie, which makes me really interested in the eventual EE. I also loved the fan service of getting to finally see things that I've always wanted to see on screen. For me the ending was perfect, tugged at my heart strings and was just beautiful. It made me want to watch the Fellowship immediately, I'm just so happy that the entire story is told. The crowd loved it, as you would expect since it's all big fans there at an early screening like this one. Lots of applauding and laughter throughout. My wife and I were so excited after, can't wait to see it again but in IMAX 3D HFR.
