Sony Japan may force Sony Pictures to give up Spider-Man says Latino-Review

Don't these movies make a profit of about 400-500 million? Like $700 million WW on a $200 budget?

I don't see why Sony would give that up, even if they are producing crap.

Then again, Sony is a strange company.

Yeah, not buying it....

Besides, where would Marvel have time to fit three Spiderman movies? Even if there was a cameo in Civil War, Spidey woudln't show up again until 2019.

Spidey is big enough for them to make room. This is a non-issue.

I don't think they'd mind pushing off a solo Spidey flick til 2019 if they knew they had him back. They can sprinkle him into Avengers movies and such. Drop him into the street level marvel shows, who knows.

The question is this, should the deal actually get done: What does this mean for Black Panther? Apparently T'Challa plays the part he plays in Civil War because Marvel couldn't use Spidey. So what if they get Spidey back? How does that fuck with plans for the Black Panther character at that point?

Either way, I'm waiting for less rumor-happy sites to jump on this.

Why? Those other sites are just going to link back to Latino-Review anyway.

2018. They'd have enough time to rewrite Avengers 3 Part 1 to include him. Though I can't imagine it's not gonna cause some problems.

No chance for Civil War, though.

Sony allegedly lost money on MiB3, and ASM2 only made about 100 million more. It's a solidly B-tier superhero franchise now, and they have no animation, videogame, or merchandising rights.

None of their planned spinoffs have any of the hype of the expanded slate announced by Marvel/DC/Fox, and as someone pointed out in another thread, WB just about ate their lunch with the Suicide Squad cast announcement. There's no way they launch a Dane Dehaan Sinister Six h2h with a Will Smith movie, and they've already delayed ASM3 to the point where their star will be a 35 year old college freshman.

If the franchise keeps regressing in revenue eventually it won't be worth it to keep rebooting a $200 million/film property.

very good points. i think people keep forgetting Sony needs to SPEND money to make money and a film franchise like Spider-Man should've been making Sony more than it has. if this report is true, then it'd reinforce the idea that Sony higher ups aren't pleased with the film studio's ability to get a worthwhile return on the property. it'd do Sony more good to sell the franchise while the superhero genre is at an all time rather than loosing more money trying to build up a franchise in an ever crowded genre of films. if Sony could do a shared deal or an outright sale of Spider-Man, i think it'd give them enough money to refocus their efforts with othet films in other genres. "with great power comes great responsibility " and Sony is somehow managing to fuck up Spider-Man so badly that its barely giving them enough money to be worthwhile. meanwhile Marvel is printing cash with a Guardians of the Galaxy, a superhero film that had no prior pop culture reference to guarantee success, yet Marvel got it to work.

simply put, Sony is too incompetent to handle such a big franchise and theyll continue to struggle with making financially successful films.

You also have to take into account the theaters cut and the marketing budget.

Was Latinoreview ever right on the money?

Often.

They fuck up quite a bit, too.

But considering their entire M.O. is to try and end-run the pr departments of most major studios, they're not gonna have the best of batting averages overall. Sometimes they publish bunk. Sometimes they fuck up an honest report. Sometimes they report on something and then shit changes at the studio in the meantime. Sometimes they get it dead-fucking-on.

It's a rumor site. They at least do their own legwork as opposed to most other rumor sites that people pay attention to on GAF, such as comicbookmovie or superherohype. They're just linkfarms, essentially - and half the time they can't even be bothered to vet or do the bare minimum to even consider what it is they're sharing.

Keep hearing about Sony giving up the Spider and it WON'T happen. Yes, please save this for the crow eating thread, but they've been very stubborn about this.

The Civil War film is now to far into the pipeline to be altered too radically. They are sticking with the Black Panther version now. At best they might be able to add a very small subplot for Spider Man if they work out a deal with Sony in the next few months.

It's not so much "they" as it is Avi Arad, who will remain the forever obstacle to any Marvel/Spider-Man crossover.

Hearing all the in fighting at the studio, I'm not surprised at the shit that is getting thought up. They are literally throwing shit to the wall and see what sticks. Sony should spin them off so if they do go under it doesn't take the rest of the company with it.

Sony Pictures is one of the few things that actually makes money, so it would be incredible stupid to spin that off right now.

Not even close. They don't get every dollar the movie makes. The movie theater takes about half over the course of it's run, then you have marketing. That's normally about as big as the movie budget was. Then once you go overseas, they get even less of that money. So after $700 million box office, I'm going to say they got about $90 million, if they were lucky.

Weren't they going to be competing against Sony's films? Just whack them in the roster. Marvel would hardly lose money.

I can't wait for the revised Civil War where T'Challa is about to make his grand entrance into the MCU....everyone is at the edge of their seats....a body guard opens a door for a foreign dignitary from Wakanda to greet Captain America and then just as the door swings open...a reporter (played by Tobey Maguire) blocks the view of the person coming out of the car and asks Captain America if he can get his picture for the school paper!

Crowd goes wild.

Alternatively just make Civil War Spider-Man V B.Panther:

Between this and having a Crash avatar you're a horrible person.

Why doesn't Marvel just buys Spiderman?
Disney will just buy Sony.

Nick Fury: "So about the alien invasion in 2012... where the fuck were you????"

Spidey: ".........................................counter earth!!!!!"

Raimi needs to come back like Singer to X-men. Marc Webb just doesn't have that magic touch, it really seems like he's just a puppet for Sony.

this place would probably eat up an aaron sorkin-penned movie about marvel losing their shit to other studios.

Avi Arad:"If you were the owners of Spiderman then you would have made Spiderman"

There's something more sweet, authentic, and endearing about Dunst and Maguire. Despite Webb being known for 500 days of summer, I don't even buy Stone and Garfield, even though they are a real couple.

Edit: it also has a lot to do with the writing.

Sony wants to be all about “quality” films (actual one-word quote, not air quotes), and the Amazing Spider-Man movies have not been that, nor have the rumors of future films in the franchise.

But they make so much money. Kind of doubt they give a shit

Marvel could always shove Spidey into one of these films. It can help give Black Panther or Doctor Strange some more mainstream appeal.

Give up Spiderman? It's a franchise which prints money which Sony needs right now. Can't see it happening.

If I'm understanding the deal right, it would give Marvel creative control. Sony would still have distribution, and thus make money off box office and DVD/Blu-Ray sales. The incentive to take this deal would be to make money off of Marvel's near-guaranteed success, rather than continuing to damage the brand for little to know gains.
