IGN: Nathan Drake will use identical model in cutscene and gameplay.

While we keep speculating I thought there were a few moments that showcased the new model pretty well during gameplay so I took screencaps. It's sort of shame that the camera is so far from Drake during most of it.

Soft shadows and veins. mmmmmm

Took some more pics for part 2 that illustrate nice lighting on the Drake model (Gamersyde's video is still really compressed :T):

There's also something I didn't appreciate until I started taking screencaps, which is that the bullets illuminate Drake's model and the environment as they pass through. Not sure if that's something we've seen in the last generation. Looks really nice though.

Yes, that's been there in other games too.

In fact, Alien went a step further and added volume lighting to fire FX (as well as bullet FX) which also casts indirect light to other objects.

Those small details :0
I really need a new pair of glasses :(

I belive "in jest" is exaclty hwo that forum is set up. It's just PC gamers taking up the monicker that some small minded console gamers have throw at them simply because they dare to enjoy games on a PC instead of a console.

Boy that sure is funny coming from you. Would you mind pointing out where PC gamers are persecuted?

Killzone, Knack, Infamous, and Driveclub all visually surpassed their initial reveal. The Order 1886 is right up there as well. And yet there is doubt about Naughty Dog? People are claiming downgrades based on pre-alpha footage? Someone fill me in pls.

They have a track record.

Game is still going to be super fun, just don't expect best graphics ever.

can you please for the love of almighty do some research of what you post.

there is a reason even mods said people better stop doing that shit. It's complete nonsense.

Nice catch with the bullet lighting.

Wish I could find an actual moonlight/night pic but this was the closest I could find.
Edit: found a better pic

Now here's someone standing outside during a morning overcast.

Looks about right.

BOTH of these are staged photographs with controlled lighting without a doubt. Not great examples at all.

Same model different LoDs I'd assume? The previous Uncharted games already scaled a lot so no surprise there.

And of course some idiot is going to post this. >_>

This comment again. Anyone care to atleast link to some data on this pic and why its stupid? For those of us who dont know.

It's a prerendered cutscene. Why would Naughty Dog downgrade something prerendered?

It's simply a change of the lighting they applied to the scene. This same picture appears in basically EVERY thread regarding apparent downgrades on Sony first party games.

Finally taking a close look at in the cutscene at the end of the demo.

If ND are using the same model in cutscene as in-game, this truly shows that carefully staged lighting does wonders.

Closer look at the materials, texture and shaders on Drake's tools (note tiny grains of sand/dirt on his pants):

The shadow casting and bounce light look crazy good here:

Lol. Ok, that IS stupid.

The trailer they showed at E3 wasn't made to look like gameplay. Hardly fair to call it a downgrade.

Also...

I guess if other news sites make it to the news section, reddit should too.

Not even that. They're both from the Same prerendered cutscene. Just that they changed the lighting in between e3 and the release.

Really?

I thought the e3 trailer just showed him on the beach and walking away after shaking the ocean water from his gun....

I don't remember that in the gamersyde video at all...was there another recently released? I assumed he got the grab from the gamersyde video.

He's talking about the dumb Uncharted 3 comparison picture.

We were talking about The old Uncharted 3 comparison shot that had popped up in the thread. :P

And this why they ND are so well respected. They truly are pioneers when it comes to details. I think they realize that given the architecture of the hardware, many more devs, third parties included will produce technically proficient visuals and so it's the finer details that will separate the best from the greats.

Also, I have a gut feeling that the final product (on the account of something I've noticed in TLoU) may well be 60fps.

Ah, this again.

Honestly, this should become ban worthy on the account of derailing thread.

Hopefully they won't pre render the cutscenes this time

They said they won't, but unless there are customization options, why would we care if they did? I don't recall past Uncharted games having bad compression during cut scenes.

I guess it would keep the install size down.

The only big difference I can think of for the end user is that the pre-rendered cutscenes are often clearly of a different quality because pre-rendered cutscenes would show higher detailed models and lighting, and I guess that can be jarring to some. It can also make me wish the entire game looked like the cutscenes lol

There would also be hard cuts to black before the pre-rendered video would play which isn't a hinderance necessarily, but not having them would result in a more seamless transition.

From the developer's end I imagine it would save a lot of space on the disc, so they can fill it stuff to enhance things in the game. That and having cutscenes be in real-time would help it stay somewhat evergreen. I imagine UC 1-3 cutscenes were rendered in 720p 30 fps, and if a Uncharted PS4 collection releases sometime in the future and the gameplay is upgraded to 1080p 60 fps, they would need to re-render all the game's cutscenes to match which would be a pain. They did it with TLOU Remastered.
