Dragon Age: Inquisition PC performance thread

Got an SLI 780 ti, but now I've got some other problems. There's silly fog/clouds everywhere and when I go near they disappear. Shadows and grass textures flicker.

Could anyone point me to the right direction? I'm new to the SLI business.

Unfortunately there is no fix for the SLI problem. Nvidia needs to issue new drivers for this.

Nah. That's pretty legitimate.

I have an i5 2500k @ 4.2, EVGA FTW 970, Win 8.1. I run everything on ultra except no MSAA, and spell effects on high and I get an average of 80fps.

Win 7 to win 8.1 was pretty huge. I used to average 60 with the same settings.
I have a 4790k @4.6, a 980 @1450 running windows 8.1, no AA @ 1080p, and I get sub-60 fps in crowded environments and other random places. Everything on ultra except tesselation... I can't imagine what it would be like with 125% scaling, on a 970..

Game performance is much better post patch - just me or anyone else experiencing that? Getting a solid 50-60FPS on nearly all ultra at 1920x1080 on my 980m/i7-4810MQ.

Still would like to get a solid 60. Anyone know if I should lower tesselation or is the trade-off huge? Already turned down HBAO a notch but don't want to sacrifice too much.

Tessellation difference between utlra and high is only noticeable if you angle the camera on a rock face/wall.

In other words, it isn't, if you ar elookign for 60 FPS.

Shadows on high vs ultra is a noticeable drop in quality (shadows are less soft), but it's also a nice jump in performance.

Thats...surprising? You might want to run a fps monitor, I think your eyes deceive you..

Look for yourself, original uploads in 2400x1350. Those are considered more demanding areas I think, but please correct me if I am wrong.
Granted It drops down to 46 fps especially when turning the camera very fast and abrubt. Maybe I was a bit to optimistic with my 50-60 fps forecast, as I am not playing with my onscreen tool on after some testing. Still in most parts/areas it runs with 60 fps.

The ground is also tesselated. The setting pushes the distance the effect begins to be applied. I found it to be crucial to a sustained, high framerate...

My game just crashed after 30 mins with the driver crash error after the hotfix. It usually takes about 8-9 hours of play for that to happen. Not a good sign : (

I was getting the same kind of chuggy stuttering in game as i usually get in the cut scenes( well before using -GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60+)

I don't see mass hysteria surrounding this so i'm assuming its just me. Was someone saying last nights windows 7 updates had some effect too?

i7 4770, GTX 760, all hardware at stock clock speeds, VSYNC on

everything in game at ultra or whatever the highest option is

~38FPS

Wow all of a sudden any time I try to load a game my entire computer stops responding and I have to reboot. I was just playing a minute ago. I don't get it.

BTW, if you're not using the command line to unlock the frame rate in cutscenes then you should use Ultra Post Processing. The DOF looks way better on Ultra vs High and since it's only in cutscenes you shouldn't get any performance hit in gameplay.

Nothing helped so far, so I backed up my saves and uninstalled the game from my SSD. I'll wait for a flurry of official (or unofficial) patches before trying the game again. Alien Isolation needs to be finished now.

1: I installed windows 8.1 and the game is running damn near 60 all the time with everything maxed out (no msaa)
2: how do I check to see if I got the patch + hotfix? Is there any fairly obvious graphic artifacts or?

Change the Mesh Quality setting to Low or Medium. You should see a noticeable drop is overall geometry quality. Apparently it was always set to Ultra before no matter what setting you used.

My game seems to look noticeably worse graphically every since the patch and hotfix. I just ran a scan through Origin on repair files just in case something is messed up but has anyone else noticed this? Its mostly objects like wheels, chairs, tables, curtains etc. Its like very very low res textures for some reason.

if you have any command line parameters, try removing them all

In order to achieve a rock solid 60fps @ 1080p at absolutely all times during gameplay (so far) I had to lower tessellation, shadows and effects from ultra to high in addition to disabling MSAA from the start. I initially thought Redcliffe Village was as bad as it was going to get, but unfortunately it did get worse as I unlocked new areas. There are places in the game that are as demanding as Redcliffe Village, except in those you also get to fight, so you'll need the extra horse power to handle all of the particle effects on top of everything else that's being rendered in the background. I'd say shoot for 75-80% maximum GPU load at Redcliffe if you're aiming for an unflinching 60fps throughout the rest of the game.

FYI, I'm on an i7 5820K/GTX 980, both overcloked.

I generally like the look of the game but something really annoys me. Well teo things actually.
The pop-up can be quite bad and I really should'nt have an issue with a 3GB 780.
The other annoying thing is the grass. Why do I always see squares or lines or htches or whatever?
Example.

This is at Ultra settings too. What causes it and can it be fixed? Or is it just my TV?

Not sure what's wrong in your picture?

I got this grass issue when I was testing Ultra settings. I'm not sure if its there on High settings (I started a new playthrough with the patch and haven't gotten to a grass-heavy area yet). Nothing I tried was able to get rid of it. I too am hoping for advice... I'm playing on a 24" monitor so its not your TV.

Fully patched game here with up to date amd/mantle drivers. My system is quite able to run current games, but after the patch/hotfix, I get frequent drops to desktop.

Typically buggy, prematurely released bioware game.

Have you tried turning the ambient occlusion off? That might be what you're seeing..

I haven't played with the hotfix yet....impressions are kind of unnerving :<

I'll take the dual gender bug back if I can play a stable game again

Has anyone had issues with Fraps since the last patch? I can no longer take screenshots with it. I have no idea if the patch is at fault, but I can't think of anything else that might be causing it.

Did they screw up sound settings with the latest patch? Running on Win 8.1, even with loudness equalization enabled, the combat sound effects are ridiculously loud compared with just about everything else in the game. Didn't have this issue pre-patch/Win 7.

Thanks!

Are SLI issues usually fixed by nvidia over time?

Yes. However, they may also be unfixed by NVidia over time. I don't honestly get why device driver APIs are such a pain in the ass. It's one of the reasons I've never wanted to have anything to do with visualization and am quite happy dealing with EAS.

Interesting, no I haven't tried that and don't really want to. The game is too gorgeous with HBAO and HBAO+. Hopefully that's not the cause of the grid-like pattern on grass...

I felt like I had that issue pre-patch.

My feeling is it's just a flaw in the graphics and there's not much, if abythiing that can be done.

When there's a lot of grass together they kind of form a pattern on screen, like looking at the weave of a carpet. I don't think it's a glitch as such. And I'm sure some people are more sensitive to this than others. I'm also playing on a 55" screen so maybe it's amplifying it.

It's been like that from day one. I made a comment about it in the OT a while ago. That's just the way they've mixed the audio - your own personal spell effects are much louder than anything else.

this game get crazy performance since launch with new amd driver and patch

with my 7870xt crossfire i go from 1080p high at 40-45 2xmsaa to now 60 90% of the time with ultra settings.
Game stays over 50 fps with 4x msaa

huge improvment (it's shame i already finish my main caracter and play less now)

Everything is reset to default settings post patch. Sound effects are ridiculously loud, indeed. I always set it to 50% while the rest at 100%.

I just tried with the current version (after hotfix) and FRAPS works fine. I play in borderless, not sure if that matters

I didn't change any sound settings pre-patch (except to switch from home theatre to tv), and there was never a huge disparity between combat sounds and every other sound.

Yeah, that's what he is saying. If you leave all the sliders at the same level then the combat effects will be much louder than everything else. You can manually lower the volume in the sound settings.

All issues i had post hotfix are gone.

Things i did:

Removed the 60fps command lines to remove cut scene stuttering (the cut scenes no longer really seem to stutter for me at all now even with the commands removed)

Installed the additional windows 7 update today. Not sure if this made a difference but i know one of the updates on Tuesday played havoc with GPU drivers.

I took a couple of side by side screenshots and there doesn't seem to be a big difference (if any)...is there any other way to check for version?
Would it lock me out of MP if I didn't have the latest hotfix and patch?

That's definitely caused by HBAO, it looks like shit in this game. Use SSAO or HBAO Full. I get that exact same thing when using HBAO. It flickers and looks terrible.

Try it again in the Hinterlands or an area with dense foliage, it should be pretty noticeable on the trees.

Thanks!

I asked Andy last time and he just said It is on Bioware(funny though Bioware have not even acknowledged it) and not them, so I'm not even sure if we are going to see a fix, this could be on Nvidia.

Hmm, thats not good. Its a pity I have to start fiddling with the settings to not to get a damned headache. Maybe I'll wait till some DLC land and maybe these things will be taken care of too.

thanks for the confirmation, I was not aware of this

What would you guess the performance impact of HBAO Full is?

Curious about this as well even though I don't really want to hear it -_-

I'm getting a 980 this week so maybe that will soften the blow.

OK, so I finally fired this bad boy up. Immediately noticed the stuttering in cutscenes, then as soon as I had control it was a smooth 60fps.

What's the best way to smooth out the cutscenes? So much has been written I can't even remember the supposed fixes. Is one of them to disable mouse smoothing? I'm using a gamepad, but the mouse is still active. You disable it by taking it all the way to the right, if I recall?
