I think it's fine if all stages on our "acceptable" list are pick-able whenever, without any counterpick rules. "Loser picks", as with the game's rules, is fine by me. Otherwise things get complicated in terms of communication.I'm mostly for it because it gives certain characters tools to deal with certain match ups (Ike in particular is a lot better with customs IMO), but if no one else is for it, I don't mind too much.
As for a quick draft of a legal stage list, I'd recommend something like:
Starter:
Final Destination/Omega Stages (Though regular FD has the light that can get distracting…
Battlefield
Smashville
Town and City
Lylat Cruise
Counterpick:
Skyloft
Castle Siege
Halberd
Delfino
Duck Hunt
KJ64 (Might be too big for 1v1s?)
There might be a stage or two up for consideration, but that's what I got so far. If anyone thinks a stage should be added or removed, let me know and we can talk, though I'm heading to sleep soon.
Some characters are helped by customs, but some aren't, and their bad matchups get worse. Jigglypuff's customs are all garbage, but then she'd have to contend with a slew of custom projectiles that make life hell for her. While I see the value in them, I think they do more harm than good. Sakurai has said that the game isn't balanced around the custom moves, which is part of why I'm not inclined to use them.

IIRC, Hyper Voice is super bad.Wait, all of them? What about Pound Blitz or Hyper Voice?
Block banana. Spot dodge the grab. Punish.Help me beat diddy kong smash gaf, for glory is full if diddy players abusing that banana upgrab combo. I don't know how to counter it :/
IIRC, Hyper Voice is super bad.
Pound Blitz, I don't know by name, but I don't recall any of his moves being good.
Regardless, none of them help in his bad matchups, which is the main issue.
Both situational, both not good.Is Sing anymore useful?
I'm certain Hyper Voice has a situational use for it like Sing does.
Pound Blitz is the rapid-jab version. Also gives more sideways distance.
I've beaten the game on 9.0 multiple times, and while I always lose one life at some point (DAMN ITEMS), I have the most success with this setup:
1) High defense character.
2) High defense equipment.
3) Healing equipment (preferably with defense!).
Healing equipment involves all of the following for me, based on the character:
-Heal whenever you hit someone (Vampire Braces)
-Heal whenever you shield something
-Heal a set % every few seconds.
If you stack a lot of healing, you'll find yourself beating all of the Master forms while still at 0% if you are patient.
The big thing to watch out for with defense is that is also makes your character slower and heavier, since it reduces speed. This means some characters play very differently. Bowser, for example, can no longer autocancel his aerials during hops. You have to play him 100% grounded.
Okay, so this is kind of working. I'm playing Bowser and I did manage to get to Master Core once but I lost a life there. Dodging its attacks is a ton more difficult when you're so slow. I kept going to test Master Fortress and that's super easy with Bowser since he can destroy all the cores in 1-2 attacks.
Items still make the CPU rounds annoying though.
Thanks. I've been practicing against some bots and so far I'm finding Rosalina to be the best against him, Luma protecting you from being grabbed is a game changer.Block banana. Spot dodge the grab. Punish.
I played as Pacman a lot tonight and I liked him quite a bit. Anyone else play as Pacman?
I also suck as this game, but I'm just getting started.

I haven't started trying to do this seriously yet (I've only knocked the 8.0 challenges out so far), but something I've read that might help a little further: if you play Classic with two players, you don't have to worry about Master Fortress. Of course, you don't actually need to have two people; just leave the second character idle.
I can't be 100% sure this works since I haven't tried it myself, but I haven't read anything about it not working.
I actually did discover that there's no Master Fortress in co-op with my roommate, but Master Core is the issue, not Master Fortress. Even if I did try to do it in co-op I'm guessing both players would have to go the entire run without losing a life and that'd probably be even more difficult. It wouldn't make Master Core himself much easier either since he has increased health in 2P to account for the second player.
Anyone up for 1v1?
Start by playing 1v1's without items.
Welcome to SmashGAF!Does anyone have some good tips for a total noob? I have never played smash before.
Any tips are welcome. What character to use, what to play to get better, any good sites with usefull info etc.
And i use the old 2 part wii controll since iv gotten used to that. Is that a bad idea?

Anyone have tips for getting better with Sheik?
I feel like his range is very small, but also only a couple moves provide reliable KO's. I've lost multiple matches because I've gotten the opponent quickly to ~100% but then I fail to KO them.
Also, how on earth do I determine which way the down+B jumps? The direction I'm facing doesn't seem to matter at all.
Welcome to SmashGAF!
Do you mean the Wii remote and nunchuck? Most would advise against that. The popular controllers are, in order, GCN controller with adapter, Wii U Pro, Wii Classic.
Aside from that, master the skills in the "How To Play" video. I recommend Kirby for learning how to get back to the stage. Once you've got those skills down, play with friends and teach them. Teaching is the best way to learn. You'll learn from each other. This is integral to getting the basics down, as it allows you to talk about what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately online gameplay doesn't allow that unless you also set up skype or XBL or something.
Once you feel confident, look up videos from tournaments or twitch tvs (Many get posted here) to learn advanced combos and edge-guarding strategies.
Unrelated question for others: Who did you use to get perfects on Target Blast? I used WFT for stage 2 and Yoshi for stage 3. Haven't gotten a perfect on stage 1 yet.
Anyway, best way to get into shape Smash-wise is to practice against humans, not CPUs. You'll start learning the basics as you get punished hard for beginner mistakes.![]()
That reminds me, how exactly do stale moves work? Does the power go back up after using enough other moves for a while or does their strength stay weakened until the end of the match?
Stale-move negation is calculated with a queue of the last nine moves a character has connected with. When a move is used that's in the queue, its damage is decreased an amount based on both how often the move is in the queue and how recently the move has been used - a move used seven moves ago will be slightly weaker than a move used eight moves ago, and a move used two moves ago will be weaker than both combined. If a move is used ten times in a row (that is, the queue is full of only that move), the total reduction will cut the move to approximately half damage.

"Use bombs wisely"
No, i'm serious. It amazes me how many sheik players just completely ignore their tilt special. As for Down B, save it for kills. Its hard enough to kill with sheik, don't make one of your few kill moves stale.
Thanks, but I can't really save it for kills when I don't know if I'm going to jump off the cliff or towards the enemy..![]()
Is there a website for this or something?Reposting for the sad folks stuck on a computer at work all day:
Don't be shy! It's all just for fun.
Alright GAF, I asked if people were interested in this before, and I saw ~10 people say they were. To me, that's enough for us to try and see if this works. I have never done something like this before, so bear with me as I try to figure out proper organization, and know that I welcome suggestions.
All skill levels are welcome!
RANBATS:
Ranbats are basically defined as a local "league" of players. It's kind of like a tournament, but more casual and relaxed in its setting. Everyone plays on a set weekly basis, and players accumulate points to "win" the season. There are no rewards here; it's just a way to keep folks playing and meeting new people, and it adds a level of discussion for the community.
EXPECTATIONS:
-You will play a FT5 (first to 5 wins is declared the winner of the set) once per week with someone on the ranbat list, minimum (up for discussion).
-You will be respectful toward others, and understand that this is intended for fun - be a good sport.
-1v1.
-No items/customs.
-2 stock with an 8-minute timer (up for discussion if folks want another standard).
-No stages with hazards.
-Round Robin format (everyone plays everyone once - the player with the most wins at the end wins the season).
Fair warning: the Google Form asks for your e-mail. The only reason I am asking for this information is to give you a Google Spreadsheet invite for recording match data. I am a public school teacher with access to thousands of addresses, phone numbers, and e-mails, and I previously managed a 70,000 person legislative district with all the personal information I could ever want at the tip of my fingers, including SSNs. If you are too paranoid to trust me, I understand and respect that, but this is the only option that ensures only tournament players can edit results without placing heavy record-keeping burdens on me.
Let me know if you think I forgot anything, or if I screwed up the Google Form.
