Super Smash Bros. for Wii U |OT| True Potential of Smash Bros.

I'm mostly for it because it gives certain characters tools to deal with certain match ups (Ike in particular is a lot better with customs IMO), but if no one else is for it, I don't mind too much.

As for a quick draft of a legal stage list, I'd recommend something like:

Starter:
Final Destination/Omega Stages (Though regular FD has the light that can get distracting…)
Battlefield
Smashville
Town and City
Lylat Cruise

Counterpick:
Skyloft
Castle Siege
Halberd
Delfino
Duck Hunt
KJ64 (Might be too big for 1v1s?)

There might be a stage or two up for consideration, but that's what I got so far. If anyone thinks a stage should be added or removed, let me know and we can talk, though I'm heading to sleep soon.
I think it's fine if all stages on our "acceptable" list are pick-able whenever, without any counterpick rules. "Loser picks", as with the game's rules, is fine by me. Otherwise things get complicated in terms of communication.

Some characters are helped by customs, but some aren't, and their bad matchups get worse. Jigglypuff's customs are all garbage, but then she'd have to contend with a slew of custom projectiles that make life hell for her. While I see the value in them, I think they do more harm than good. Sakurai has said that the game isn't balanced around the custom moves, which is part of why I'm not inclined to use them.

Wait, all of them? What about Pound Blitz or Hyper Voice?

IIRC, Hyper Voice is super bad.

Pound Blitz, I don't know by name, but I don't recall any of his moves being good.

Regardless, none of them help in his bad matchups, which is the main issue.

Is Sing anymore useful?

I'm certain Hyper Voice has a situational use for it like Sing does.

Pound Blitz is the rapid-jab version. Also gives more sideways distance.

Both situational, both not good.

Pound Blitz doesn't seem to offer anything interesting or unique. Just hop and attack normally for more safety and control.

I am thinking about how HungryBox says he can't beat DHD at all right now. Nothing in Jigg's custom set helps with that matchup. DHD gets a lot of great new tools, though.

Sign up. :-P

I've beaten the game on 9.0 multiple times, and while I always lose one life at some point (DAMN ITEMS), I have the most success with this setup:
1) High defense character.
2) High defense equipment.
3) Healing equipment (preferably with defense!).

Healing equipment involves all of the following for me, based on the character:
-Heal whenever you hit someone (Vampire Braces)
-Heal whenever you shield something
-Heal a set % every few seconds.

If you stack a lot of healing, you'll find yourself beating all of the Master forms while still at 0% if you are patient.

The big thing to watch out for with defense is that is also makes your character slower and heavier, since it reduces speed. This means some characters play very differently. Bowser, for example, can no longer autocancel his aerials during hops. You have to play him 100% grounded.

Okay, so this is kind of working. I'm playing Bowser and I did manage to get to Master Core once but I lost a life there. Dodging its attacks is a ton more difficult when you're so slow. I kept going to test Master Fortress and that's super easy with Bowser since he can destroy all the cores in 1-2 attacks.

Items still make the CPU rounds annoying though.

I did it with an Auto healing, attack and defence boosted Ike with the custom move close combat (Specifically for the fighting mii battle) and that diagonal aether (Specifically because he was too gimpable in the final battle).

I got fed up with waiting for my Japanese copy with the GameCube adapter (and my order was canceled due to lack of stock), so I finally broke and downloaded it the other day. I obviously can't use a gamecube controller now, and I'm still adjusting from Brawl... I do look forward to hopefully playing with you all. I'll sign up for the ranbat. I hope my ridiculous schedule doesn't interfere.

I actually just realized I should probably skip this season, since I'll be out of town for 9 days at the end of the month...

I vote for FT3.

I played as Pacman a lot tonight and I liked him quite a bit. Anyone else play as Pacman?

I also suck as this game, but I'm just getting started.

I made my own Smashketball after seeing the design posted online. Such an awesome stage to play on. Team matches 2-on-2 with a bunch of stock lives is great. Also, optional all Captain Falcon :)

I haven't started trying to do this seriously yet (I've only knocked the 8.0 challenges out so far), but something I've read that might help a little further: if you play Classic with two players, you don't have to worry about Master Fortress. Of course, you don't actually need to have two people; just leave the second character idle.

I can't be 100% sure this works since I haven't tried it myself, but I haven't read anything about it not working.

Oh yes.

I actually did discover that there's no Master Fortress in co-op with my roommate, but Master Core is the issue, not Master Fortress. Even if I did try to do it in co-op I'm guessing both players would have to go the entire run without losing a life and that'd probably be even more difficult. It wouldn't make Master Core himself much easier either since he has increased health in 2P to account for the second player.

I thought the 9.0 no-dying run had to be solo?

Does anyone have some good tips for a total noob? I have never played smash before.

Any tips are welcome. What character to use, what to play to get better, any good sites with usefull info etc.

And i use the old 2 part wii controll since iv gotten used to that. Is that a bad idea?

Welcome to SmashGAF!

Do you mean the Wii remote and nunchuck? Most would advise against that. The popular controllers are, in order, GCN controller with adapter, Wii U Pro, Wii Classic.

Aside from that, master the skills in the "How To Play" video. I recommend Kirby for learning how to get back to the stage. Once you've got those skills down, play with friends and teach them. Teaching is the best way to learn. You'll learn from each other. This is integral to getting the basics down, as it allows you to talk about what works and what doesn't. Unfortunately online gameplay doesn't allow that unless you also set up skype or XBL or something.

Once you feel confident, look up videos from tournaments or twitch tvs (Many get posted here) to learn advanced combos and edge-guarding strategies.

Unrelated question for others: Who did you use to get perfects on Target Blast? I used WFT for stage 2 and Yoshi for stage 3. Haven't gotten a perfect on stage 1 yet.

I used Ganondorf for stage 2 and Pac Man for stage 3. I don't remember who I used for stage 1 but it was probably Pikachu since I was using him to try out all the early game stuff

A little bird told me Santa is bringing a WiiU for my son, i already bought a pro controller and this game lol, can't wait to finally try this. I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the SNES, good times ahead.

You shouldn't worry about what character in particular is best to use. The important thing is that you find a character you're comfortable with and can perform well with. I see a lot of people not wanting to play characters because they're low tier just as often as I see people not wanting to play characters because they're high tier; in the end, don't worry about the tier, but choose who you think is fun and reliable. And yes, playing with a fun character is important. People learn best when they have fun.

I play Diddy because he's fun. So happens he's also a great character.

Anyway, best way to get into shape Smash-wise is to practice against humans, not CPUs. You'll start learning the basics as you get punished hard for beginner mistakes. :)

I noticed a trend with Japanese players in that they always disconnect after a single match. I Google searched and there's about 5 GameFAQ threads on it!

I can see the value of this from a competitive perspective, as in they want to keep their cards close to their chest, but boy is it annoying!

Anyone have tips for getting better with Sheik?

I feel like his range is very small, but also only a couple moves provide reliable KO's. I've lost multiple matches because I've gotten the opponent quickly to ~100% but then I fail to KO them.

Also, how on earth do I determine which way the down+B jumps? The direction I'm facing doesn't seem to matter at all.

ok

then what about Palutena, Miis, Ganondorf, Charizard, and others that are helped significantly by them

or what about how Diddy, Sheik, Yoshi, etc. DON'T get much of any help from customs

edit: oh look at that another misinterpreted Sakurai quote, if I got a dollar every time that happened I'd be the richest man in the world

I fought against a crazy Ness player in For Fun. First he deflected my tree with his bat and killed me. Another time, I was riding on my lloid, he deflected me with his bat, and I crashed into Marth killing him. NESS GOT THE CREDIT FOR THE KILL. He also KO'd me with a PK Thunder slam. I wasn't even mad, just impressed.

"Use bombs wisely"

No, i'm serious. It amazes me how many sheik players just completely ignore their tilt special. As for Down B, save it for kills. Its hard enough to kill with sheik, don't make one of your few kill moves stale.

That reminds me, how exactly do stale moves work? Does the power go back up after using enough other moves for a while or does their strength stay weakened until the end of the match?

Thanks for the replys.

Stale-move negation is calculated with a queue of the last nine moves a character has connected with. When a move is used that's in the queue, its damage is decreased an amount based on both how often the move is in the queue and how recently the move has been used - a move used seven moves ago will be slightly weaker than a move used eight moves ago, and a move used two moves ago will be weaker than both combined. If a move is used ten times in a row (that is, the queue is full of only that move), the total reduction will cut the move to approximately half damage.

This applies similarly to knockback.

Hitting a shield will not put the move in the queue. Hitting an object/item/part of stage like the pillars on Luigi's Mansion will put the move in the queue. The queue is emptied when you die. To get your kill moves refreshed again so you can kill with them you should connect with other moves so the kill move is pushed down the queue or out of the queue completely.

Mario, Kirby and Bowser are super easy to use and good characters to start with. You can technically start with anyone, but starting with more of a "brawler" type character I feel gets you a better feel of movement, spacing, distance, and other stuff. Important things to learn as a new player.

Also, play with whoever you can play with. The best way to learn is to play other people. If you have a friend that can come play with you that is also new, that would probably be ideal. That's really the best way to learn.

well, smash is a fanservice game, since it allows you to play as your favorite Nintendo character, so for starters pick your fav franchise rep, for example, I am a Zelda fanboy so my first pick in Smash is always Link

as for how to get better, well, you can play against other players, look around in smashboards for theorical knowlegde for the character you pick, and apply that to some matches against people around here, SmashGAF is filled with pretty good people, play against them and you'll learn a thing or two each match

Thanks, but I can't really save it for kills when I don't know if I'm going to jump off the cliff or towards the enemy.. :(

Sheik has great recovery so you should always be able to get back if you miss with Bounching Fish. And unless I'm missing something, the direction it launches is defaulted to the direction you are facing. If you're quickly pressing the opposite direction though it will launch that way.

Reposting for the sad folks stuck on a computer at work all day:

Don't be shy! It's all just for fun. :-)

Alright GAF, I asked if people were interested in this before, and I saw ~10 people say they were. To me, that's enough for us to try and see if this works. I have never done something like this before, so bear with me as I try to figure out proper organization, and know that I welcome suggestions.

All skill levels are welcome!

RANBATS:
Ranbats are basically defined as a local "league" of players. It's kind of like a tournament, but more casual and relaxed in its setting. Everyone plays on a set weekly basis, and players accumulate points to "win" the season. There are no rewards here; it's just a way to keep folks playing and meeting new people, and it adds a level of discussion for the community.

EXPECTATIONS:
-You will play a FT5 (first to 5 wins is declared the winner of the set) once per week with someone on the ranbat list, minimum (up for discussion).
-You will be respectful toward others, and understand that this is intended for fun - be a good sport.
-1v1.
-No items/customs.
-2 stock with an 8-minute timer (up for discussion if folks want another standard).
-No stages with hazards.
-Round Robin format (everyone plays everyone once - the player with the most wins at the end wins the season).

Fair warning: the Google Form asks for your e-mail. The only reason I am asking for this information is to give you a Google Spreadsheet invite for recording match data. I am a public school teacher with access to thousands of addresses, phone numbers, and e-mails, and I previously managed a 70,000 person legislative district with all the personal information I could ever want at the tip of my fingers, including SSNs. If you are too paranoid to trust me, I understand and respect that, but this is the only option that ensures only tournament players can edit results without placing heavy record-keeping burdens on me.

Let me know if you think I forgot anything, or if I screwed up the Google Form.

Spent over three hours last night playing Smashketball on a custom map with a crew. It was so much fun, this really needs to become a thing haha!

Though can't use Cusrom maps on 5-8 player Smash? What's up with that
