What are your thoughts on 4chan?

It's the only website I look at daily. Along with GAF. Growing up browsing that site was probably a bad idea though. I see the stuff people here get offended by and I usually shrug at it.

Only time I went the front page had child porn. Is that still a problem?

on /b/ maybe. On the otherboards you're not really gonna see it (unless you count animated child porn). The porn boards have almost evolved to such a point where they know what the youngest looking legal images they can post are. It's kind of amazing in a fucked up way.

It's always been an interesting place that has generated a lot of creativity and culture. But it's also always attracted a lot of total shitheads, and the general culture of trying to be as detached and offensive as possible in order to look cool is pretty juvenile and tiring. And this is not unique to 4chan, but a number of the boards have a groupthink dynamic going on that creates nasty, insular cultures (/v/, /mu/, /r9k/, /pol/).

It's the ultimate expression of adolescent male internet oneupmanship.

It's not a meme. The bigotry is not equal opportunity. If you deviate from that particular combination, you have to be prepared to be lambasted with bigotry about your phenotype. Not everyone has the skin, fortitude, or patience, to ignore it and move on, and that's probably who Onemic's advisory was trying to reach.
For people living outside the US it is a meme.

Maybe it depends on the board? I've never had the displeasure of stumbling onto CP, and the mods are usually very good at banning shit that doesn't belong.

That said, I avoid /b/.

I think it has it good points due it's counter-culture nature. It's interesting to see how people show their true colors in anonymity, even in the form of trolling.

Went a few times for random things. Never saw the need or reason to go more.

Lifetime: probably about 25 minutes or so. Some of my friends are regulars. Idk. Maybe I went to the wrong places.

4Chan >>> NeoGAF >>>>>>>>>>>>> Reddit > all the other shit on the internet.

99% of everything I've ever found funny on the internet has been on or come from 4chan, there's always at least 10 threads I can find on there that are hilarious.

The only thing it's worse for is competitive Smash threads, though I still respect peoples decisions to completely shit those threads up. Otherwise everything here is just so droll sometimes.

it'll always be awkward to me how widespread and mainstream the site has become, considering what it was many years ago. I wonder if I've got any screenshots of the old board listing.

Also its popularity proved one thing to me - it's not some anomaly attracting the dregs of the internet. It isn't just some wretched hive of scum and villainy, or a shithole where only horrible people post. It's normal people. That's what normal people are like inside.

I am not claiming you are right, but you are definitely not wrong.

Except for the fact that there's such huge swings even within 4chan itself.

/m/ isn't a shithole the way /v/ is. On certain boards on that website, there's just straight up something wrong with them at their core.

Hey, occasionally, GAF strikes comedy gold, like the "green sound waves".

GAF is too stifled and controlled of an environment to compete with the creativity of 4chan. It's not necessarily a bad thing though, 4chan still exists for unfiltered experimentation and allowing yourself to fail anonymously, GAFs here for other stuff.

I think Gaf can be hilarious, but it's more of a community. 4chan is basically an open-forum glory hole.

It's not the posts of 4chan that I'm bothered by. I find the unfiltered content to be interesting, but I've never felt comfortable posting in an anonymous structure. I need to have my own account and name to follow and adjust my posts when necessary. If 4chan had an account registration system, I'd probably post there.

This is one of the funniest shit that I know of.

LOL

Brilliant.

Anyway, my thoughts are pretty much what OP said.

4chan is what you make of it. Of course if you go into /b/ you're going to be exposed to undesirable content, but then why would you go to /b/? I visit /w/ and /wg/ from time to time for wallpapers and the phone threads they have. Just find a board that interests you and as long as it's not one of the bigger boards, if you've heard of it outside of 4chan it probably is, you may find something you like.

4chan basically works on the principle that your Jimmies should be rustled.
So if you are a person with a background that might allow your Jimmies to be rustled easier, then 4chan will latch unto that to rustle your Jimmies and rustle them good.

TL;DR: Don't let them rustle your Jimmies.

Best answer

/b/ can be funny. /v/ and /pol/ used to be great for discussions until everyone bailed and went to other chan sites. /k/ is a great resource for asking about obscure weapons or hard to find parts.

Essentially, there are a couple boards worth visiting once in a while but for the most part the site is a shell of its former self.

I'm partial to those images where you like...design characters or have a certain amount of points to spend on a house or stuff like that. Not sure what the word for them is.

EDIT: Like this

this is fucking bullshit.

either you take the hot 18 year old and live a compromised life, or you use the 18 points to get a good jerk-off life.

I mean, its 10 years of your life. No matter what on this list, you're going to miss.

You need the sunroof, and the library and the gym. those things will keep you from being depressed. but then you have all the entertainment things..

this picture is giving me an existential crisis. WHAT THE FUCK

Hey, occasionally, GAF strikes comedy gold, like the "green sound waves".

Oh, there gonna be in-joke and funny moments in any sufficiently large community, but the sheer amount of purvasive memes and jokes that have leaked from 4chan to the greater internet concousness, and even the mainstream media, are so incredibly numerous.

The best thing to have is the girl, the doctor, the kitchen, the garden, the pool table, and the PC. I'll take 5 million instead of 10.

I'd probably go crazy without having someone to talk to, and medical care through an Indian doctor means I have two people. The garden means I won't be disgustingly pale, and can get something close to fresh air. Pool table and PC will be a good way to spend time.

Always liked the saying.....4chan is like the public toilet stall wall. ...sometimes it can be brilliant. ...but most of the time it has shit allover it....The ylyl threads can be pretty funny

I used to browse /v/ a lot and it was pretty good until I realized how negative they were about everything. I honestly felt it changing the way I played games. Then I thought to myself, "if only there was a website where I could talk about videogames and its a notch oor two less on the negative belt."

I still browse 4chan for the porn though

This image has distracted me from an assignment.

I'd compromise and take five million for the 35 points to choose:

Garden with greenhouse (2 points)
Medical care (2 points)
Hygiene products and the jacuzzi (3 points)
Library and study (4 points)
Full kitchen (6 points)
The girl (18 points)

Jacuzzi + Girl = Sexy Times

Not having internet, music, video games, TV and film might drive me insane but I figure that a library of that scale would keep me entertained. I'm assuming that a library containing every book ever published is so large I could divide and turn a portion of it into a 'pseudo-gym'. With the amount of books I have, I could use them as weights, and I could use the cabinets to perform lift-ups. Of course it wouldn't be as efficient as the gym, but it's better than nothing. I'd have access to plenty of dietary and fitness books as well. With the full kitchen, I'd be able to treat my body with the good, healthy stuff.

The doctor is mandatory, going 10 years without one might be a bad idea. I initially chose sunlight, but I replaced it with the garden and greenhouse. With the library I'd be able to read up on garden-y stuff.

After the 10 years I'd catch up on all the new games, music, TV and film I'd missed. I'd use the five million to buy an 8K TV (or an even better one if technology moved fast) and top of the line computer hardware to play games. Hopefully GAF is still up in 2024!

Pretty okay.

/a/ is my main board. The community pretty much never changes since I first browsed it back in 2007. They encourage "go lurk and help yourself or fuck off" behavior to maintain posting quality.

/v/ used to be a decent board, but they're annoying now, especially their PC master race attitude. Once a console game gets announced for PC, it's over, say goodbye to any decent discussion about said game. The PC master race there just cannot hold any discussion and they just care about flaunting their "oh so superior" PC version of the game against console gamers. The moment they find out someone is playing the console version of a multiplatform game, all you're getting will be "HAHAHA, CONSOLE PEASANT! Why you be playing the inferior version? Look at us, we can play at 4k resolution, 240fps, and glorious anti-aliasing. You jelly bro, you mirin'?", from there comes the opposing argument, and from there, welp there goes the whole thread. Instead of just talking with fellow players about the game regardless of the hardware differences, they just decide to shitpost.

/vg/ is THE 4chan board for video games now.

I lurk /tv/ for watching daily baneposting, and hearing them complaining every time a new superhero movie gets announced by screaming "CAPESHIT!!!!"

/ck/ because the foods that get posted look delicious.

/m/ because I like model kits even though I can't afford them.

/gif/ because /gif/.

/s4s/ for fun
shit
posting.

I've been browsing 4chan for over a decade now. Its not as bad as some people make it out to be, I suppose.

/v/ is absolutely terrible nowadays, though. There are some good/funny topics here and there but for the most part it maybe one of the worst boards.

/vg/ is like a board full of NeoGAF style |OT|'s. but without the insular community aspect of it (because everyone is Anonymous). So its a bit easier to just jump in and join the conversation.

/mu/ is good for finding new music, but otherwise is worthless for discussion.

/tg/ is fun for the numerous "Quest" threads and the occasional P&P discussions.

/x/ is fun to browse when bored on a sleepless night, a little too slow for my tastes, though.

And those are the boards I visit.

I was on there a few weeks ago and some sick fuck had put a hidden camera in the bathroom to film his sister (possibly sister in law) that's all you need to know really.

It's a bit of a huge circlejerk in many ways and a lot of people talk big about video games. especially their development, without really knowing a lot about how things work/are done.

Off topic section is cool.

Beautiful.

Damn you. I've been staring at this for the past half hour trying to decide. -_-

/tg/ is full of shit like this, most of them geared towards fantasy or sci-fi, though.

Edit: here, found some.

I stick with /vr/ and /m/, only lurking /v/ when morbid curiosity takes me. Also, /d/ is the best fap board if you can find what you're into (also plenty of draw threads, which is exciting).

/vr/ in particular is a great board considering all of its flaws. Right now, there's a big influx of college-age console gamers that just don't post in my Japanese computer gaming thread. Frustrating, but I'm going to get past it. Still, lots of interesting discussions about obscure PlayStation games, Jagged Alliance 2, and CRTs/older gaming displays occur each and every month; the Doom/FPS generals are legendary, easily the best way to get into that culture. We get a lot of migrators from /v/, /vg/, /m/, /a/ (sadly the source of many waifu-based digressions), /g/, and confused /tg/ people who post about tabeltop games in the wrong board.

They have a weird elitist attitude sometimes that I don't like. The best games according to /v/ are completely backwards to everyone else. Then if you do like anything else besides what "/v" likes then you're pretty much the laughing stock.

4chan is great if you don't take it too seriously and you're not a complete noob. (posting 4chan stuff on facebook and shit like that)

4chan pluses:
-great porn
-funny gifs
-awesome wallpapers
-great to play Mario Kart tournaments
-great time killer
-spooky stuff on /x/
-pretending to be a retarded console warrior on /v/ to counter-troll them
-the neogaf hate (is hilarious)

4chan cons:
-gore
-weird porn

do you really care what a bunch of anonymous people laugh at you on the internet?
even when you are anonymous too?

4Chan is perfect for you if you are:

- Male
- White
- Straight

If you're not all of these things, 4Chan probably isnt for you

Didn't someone do a ethnicity/sexuality/etc breakdown of 4chan and actually found that it was one of the more diverse websites on the internet? Especially in terms of sexuality.

I remember reading a pretty in-depth article about it about a year ago.
