It's solid. I always feel it gets more attention than it deserves
Agreed with this. Personally I liked Samurai Champloo more

Burning question: why did you buy it in the first place without being sure that you wanted to watch it? Do you buy things from amazon and then flip them for profit?
heard great things about it too. Is it done by the same people as Bebop?

Pretty much 90% of the show is fluff, with no relevance what so ever to the "main plot" (and I use that term loosely) of Spike vs Vicious.
Is the show pretty? Hell yes.
Is the show well voiced? Dubs and Subs.
Is the show well directed? Of course, it's Watanabe.
Does the music work? Anyone arguing 'no' has an uphill fight.
Is the show coherent? Meh, not really.
Is the show well written? If you like episodic series then yes.
Is the show over rated? Abso-fucking-lutely.
Samurai Champloo is pretty much superior to Cowboy Bebop in every way except one.

That's a fair point. If definitely avoids the trappings of most other anime.
As a teenager who didn't like anime I liked evangelion far more as an entry point to the genre. I went into that though expecting all the angst and what not

By the trappings you mean the rote adherence to an incredibly limited subset of tropes and characters?
Are you talking about Eva? At the time Eva was a deconstruction of the mech genre - really kicks in midway through. It was after it people began using the character archetypes for their own shows, which in turn led to the deconstruction of the deconstruction (and possible reconstruction?) that was Gurren Lagann.
They're not tropes the first time you experience them.By the trappings you mean the rote adherence to an incredibly limited subset of tropes and characters?

This was one of the first animes I introduced my girlfriend to. She was pretty meh on it. She made an interesting point which was that if I had shown it to her later, after she had gotten accustomed to watching and enjoying anime, she would have had a different reaction. As it stand it is forever a meh experience for her.
I actually like Space Dandy over Cowboy and Champloo. Is that bad?

So I watched episode 5 and wow, it was pretty intense. I'm guessing the storyline involving Spike's past is far from over and really excited to see how it all pans out. Really enjoyed all the episodes so far, can't wait for more.
I thought it was disappointing, because the show's too quirky for its own good.Seriously, how is Space Dandy? Is it on par with Bebop?
This post didn't get enough love. Well-played.Yeah the show really goes out with a bang.

Y'know, I've been rewatching the series now the blu ray is out and I actually think Ballad of Fallen Angels is a low point. It's not bad by any means, but it lacks the heart most great Bebop episodes have. It feels like a bunch of film noir and John Woo film tropes strung together. Some of the lines are truly dire, especially in the Vicious fight at the end.
It has some of the most striking visuals in the series and some great music, though, so it's at least better than Boogie Woogie Feng Shui. That and My Funny Valentine are the biggest clunkers in the series.

No way man, My Funny Valentine hasa funny twist, on what could've been a really cheesy melodramatic anime love story, i don't get the hate for that episode.
