Thing is, there's been spotty attacks from China to St. Louis for months, and they will randomly take credit for it. I also haven't seen if anyone has been tracking when they say they're doing an attack/when one actually happens.
For all anyone can tell, they just watch http://map.ipviking.com and get on twitter when they see an attack happening.

Getting into the nuances for the general public is silly. To a great majority of people, "using a computer in a bad way to make something not work" is hacking. If you explain DDoS to them they're gonna say that it's a form of hacking, or just not care.

Which is why the CNN article is kind of conflicting. They report on problems and this is probably the least of concerns here. They never take time out to find something positive.

I'd guess a little more than they would normally lose due to the amount of traffic that must be happening today. I feel even without the DDoS from those kids that the network would suffer from new users. I wonder if both MS and Sony will recoup some money once the networks are fully online again.

Technically they are all black skulls surrounded by different colors but yeah..This is why they can't find them. They're going through so many proxys that it looks like the attacks are coming from China or anywhere else in the world.
