LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

What damage?

Technically, a DDoS attack can cause some lasting damage, but in the form of software crashes due to buffer overflows, servers locking up due to the sheer volume of attacks aimed at it, and so fourth. Nothing physical, but things can crash as a result of a DDoS. It's why DDoS is so effective - it doesn't just clog the pipes, it knocks over a few things that were ill-equipped to deal with it.

So is lizard squad really paying to rent bots to take down the service? Thats hilarious i bet that rental costs more then i paid for PSN/XBL in down time. Rent as much as they want i say.

Unless your google I wish I knew what wizardry they use to protect against ddos. But I bet if google really became a gaming company their servers would be vulnerable as well.

Google suffered a DDOS as recently as DECEMBER 1st.

No one, I repeat NO ONE can prevent it from happening. The only way to not be a target is to not be a target.

Oh. Can't even play Sunset Overdrive offline. It keeps asking me to choose a profile, then it tries signing in but no dice. So I can't even play. Great. Guess I'll play on my PC.

I think in the xbox settings you can turn the console to "offline mode" or something and then you can use your profile without it trying to log you into Live

So I can't play any games whatsoever without being signed in and I can't access any application either. My xbox is essentially useless right now. Why the fuck can't I play forza offline?

Fuck this

Turn off wifi/Internet under settings.

It's conjecture on my part, since there are only two possibilities really: they are either renting time on a botnet command and control, or they have grown their own botnet of that size and are flexing it. The first is pretty bad, the second... much more troubling. I can't really say why I think this particular group is renting time on one, it's just my gut feeling really. It's the way they ape the earlier Lulsec attacks, who also likely played around with botnets for a while after discovering you can get access to them relatively cheaply.

I mean what is cloudflare then?

Mitigation. One of the cheaper ones, or "affordable" as they call it, compared to Norse and Arbor. Norse has that "if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it" level of class. They run an incredible outfit. As for Cloudflare, it helps, but it's not infallible. Kind of like installing a free antivirus - it does the trick, but if someone really tried, they could probably still find a way to infect your PC.

You kinda answer your own question. It sucks, but these people have found a nice big button to press to get a reaction, so they press it.

Yeah but this is not a reaction that causes anything but anger. No one is supporting this kind of shit. It's not like this action is reminding cops to not shot unarmed people, or bankers are stealing everyone's money or anything else. It is people trying to have fun on a day they can (in my situation I work tomorrow so I can't do shit till maybe Sunday now) and they just fuck it all up. There is no good side to this stuff.

What system are you on? We had no problems with Infinity here (PS4). Didn't even have to disconnect.

Xbox one - my wife or me cannot sign in on the live thing to get into the game at all. My daughter was amped all day to get in and get her achievement or something going when we got through all the shit. Then nothing works.

Just go into the system's network settings and enable offline play.

Path should be something like
Settings/network/offline

Thanks for the info.

My brother is trying to use his Xbox for the first time. It keeps trying to update, but since it can't, the only option he can select is to "turn off Xbox."

Basically he can't even visit the home menu, it seems, making the system useless

Yes. And it's unfortunate we live on a planet where that is apparently exactly what some people want. To ruffle feathers, for *no reason* other than they can. It's meaningless, and senseless, and downright stupid, and betrays the intelligence of the people doing it, highlighting just how dangerous a sociopath can be. Especially a sociopath that has access to the force-multiplying effects of the Internet.

how can these "kids" afford botnets anyway ? arent they expensive to begin with.

Currently, cheap ones apparently go for as low as $40 an hour, while $150 can get you a week-long attack. Throw in $20 for some Ransomeware to get a Rube to initiate/buy the attack for added protection.

Is there anything xbox live or PSN can do to survive these attacks or lessen there effects?
Sorry..... not too knowledgeable about this stuff.

As I said above, turn off wifi/Internet under settings. Unplug network cable if using one.

We need a sticky on this.

They claimed to stop the attacks but neither service is available yet. This doesn't mean the attacks are still ongoing though, there is an expected recovery time.

Yeah I believe they shut off the attacks but the servers still have to go through all the crap they received today, so this might still be awhile.

And they already said they are launching another attack tomorrow so this is just a mess.

Great, I knew it was down most the day and thought maybe it would be up by now and had told my brother in law about The Interview movie being on the Xbox One to rent. So here I am finally at home and he's on his way to watch it and crap is still down.

They might not actually buy the botnets. But then I get I doubt they have the hacking prowess to actually create their own. Or perhaps they buy from a really cheap service.

Rent it from youtube then watch it from the browser.

For those who want to watch Netflix etc on the Xbox One can try this, not sure if its a 100% fix since obviously I'm not risking logging out

1. Select "Go Offline" in Network Settings on the console
2. Launch Netflix App until it says you need an account
3. Go back to settings and go back online
4. The Netflix app should crash, restart the app and it should load up

While I wasn't affected much by this (we had friends over who and were set to watch The Interview using our 360), its completely turned us all off on consoles. The fact this has been happening for a while now and its still not been addressed is a huge turnoff. We we're all planning on getting PS4's once the new year starts, but with this stuff on-going, its just not worth it anymore.

We don't get a lot of time to game these days and its been disrupted by the assholes enough already.

Say what you will about how its not anyones fault but the bottom line is it just leads to frustration when we finally think we can play on the weekend or a holiday and we're fucked because of this.

At least on a PC, we're not at the mercy of one platform holder getting screwed.

What a cluster fuck. The services are down, and people are complaining that they can`t even launch their offline only games.

I wasnt able to get on Netflix nor Hulu. I thought these apps ran independently from Live or PSN.

I know they are no longer behind the pay wall, but didnt know they still depended on Live/PSN.

Sorry..... not too knowledgeable about this stuff.

It's a fair question. Companies can spend more money to install more mitigation, signing up with more services like Norse that have early-warning systems, prevention systems and other really fancy stuff. But it costs money, and the more protection you want, the more money it costs. There is a point where you might be spending far too much to try and prevent an attack that never comes. All companies can really do is go for what they think is acceptable, and hope that attacks stay below a certain threshold. These kinds of attacks may get Sony and MS to spend more - but that's executive-level decision making.

This really highlights a major problem with the Internet, but how often this will have to happen before companies realize this is a problem *bigger* than just their own profits, is unclear. I know Google is actively involved in DDoS prevention and education, but even then it's the kind of problem that's hard-coded into the very fabric of how the Internet works. We need a new internet, with new protocols, checks and protection. But that means scrapping the existing one, and nobody really wants to do that.

At least on a PC, we're not at the mercy of one platform holder getting screwed.

Provided you're not too heavily invested in Steam. But even there, Steam isn't *too* bad since it has a functional, if flaky, offline mode.

Rent it from youtube then watch it from the browser.

Youtube on the X1 will not work, Reason I was going to rent it from the X1 is because it's hook to my projector so we could watch it on the big screen. I really hate messing with the wiring form my setup. Seems like I may have to.

What's one day of not gaming. Sounds like they did us a favor for one day.

Look in front of you, those are called people. They may be friends or family, spark up a conversation.

Happy holidays.

We don't all have the luxury of being surrounded by family during the holidays.

On topic, I'm glad I can use Netflix and WWE Network without signing into PSN. I was worried this would be an issue

Personally, I didn't try myself on my own XBO but my little cousin was playing a friend and playing with a friend against other online players in FIFA on XBO over XBL a few hours ago. It was a little laggy here and there but, other than that, it was pretty smooth.

Hey, Lizard Dicks. This is, at most, annoying. Focus this energy on something that could make a difference for all of us. Attack maybe, I don't know, Comcast or Verizon corporate or something similar. This is the equivalent of someone kind of yelling all day outside of your house. It kind of annoys you and makes you not able to perform some activities, but ultimately does nothing. Grow the fuck up.

I'll be glad when this passes, was hoping to play some Far Cry 4 on the PS4 at some point today, but trying to redeem the code for the "4 games, choose 1" deal, I just get this:

Just a game obviously, and I already have it on the PC, still tho.
