LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

So at this point, what's to stop this attack from Lizard Squad? I mean, do they have the resources to continuesly do this over the next few days?

I don't see why not but its currently a novelty for them and novelties generally wear off.

I dont want to come across as a smartass but I am 99% sure that when you signed up for your service that you agreed to terms that if it went offline, you are fine with it (and all that legal stuff).

The best way to go about it, is to not pay for the service next time, then perhaps Microsoft/Sony will be inclined to hand out free stuff.

This whole situation sucks though and for the first time, I am actually questioning online gaming. (but of course when my PSN runs out, ill be the first to go renew it lmao....)

Whatever. I still feel that when you are not getting what you are paying for, then you should be given some sort of compensation as an act of appreciation and good will. That is just good business. Or... at least it used to be.

Time for the cliche. Back in my day if you did something bad you got your ass whupped for it. This kind of thing requires an asswhupping of huge proportions. This is more than just video games. This is destroying people's livelihoods.
And this needs to be a lesson to companies that an all digital console is a no no in this day and age. Here's looking at you Microsoft.

And perhaps the perpetrators will be prosecuted and will one day face the many, many abuses present in American prisons. Maybe that will salivate your internet justice thirst.

Can anyone explain why I'm able to get online with my PS3 and can view the mobile app but cannot get online be with my PS4?
I wonder the same thing. I could see people online with my app yesterday, yet I could not until late last night.

Okay so now it's day 2 and at this point I'm pretty fucking annoyed. I can count on one hand how many times I've had two days off consecutively in the last year...

These guys need to go to jail, fucking assholes. If Lizard Squad members are doing this now, at a young age, then they will probably grow up and still be criminals. Cant expect much from a human being that send bomb threats to an airplane too. And yes, hey need to be punched in the face. In public.

So technically they could keep this up forever couldn't they?

Security guys to do what? How many times do people have to post the same thing before people understand?

Security advisors can help setup the network in ways that aren't as easily brought down by a botnet ddos. I assume they do employee those already and this is actually just a load issue due to the holidays. The downside of good sales numbers I guess.

Normally I'd agree but this is an instance where you're complaining that you can't use a service due to an attack that they in no way could prevent. What in the world were they supposed to do? Not to mention giving away free stuff as a result is only going to encourage more stuff like this to happen

I don't care. I am paying for a service that I can't use. Were it me, I would go out of my way to apologize and show my customers that their business is appreciated. Not doing so could even drive more away.

So is this one of those things that if we ignore them they go away? I can't imagine spending my time and money just to be a dick to millions of people.

Doesnt really matter if it's in the terms of service. Those things have no real legal bearing.

If it went offline and there was a good reason (maintenance, fire in the server room, earthquake) for it - YES, i'm totally cool with that. THIS bullshit i am not okay with.

You being this laughably angry is exactly what they want because, for the most part, you can't do shit besides calling for a public punching of faceless script kiddies.

So the actual attack is over and what's left is just the networks coming back online and dealing with the deluge of people trying to get online at once?

You show them you care by getting the service back up and running after being victims of a criminal attack. Again if they give out free stuff for this all its going to do is encourage another attack further down the line because a bad precedent has been set.

If this was something that was 100 percent Sony and Microsoft's fault I'd totally agree with you. But it wasn't.

LOL, what the fuck ever, man. What Kim dotcom is doing is rewarding this kind of activity. Giving a bit of compensation to your affected customer base who are paying for this service is merely an act of appreciation.

Sure, if you take what these Lizard Squad assholes say at face value.
Which you maybe shouldn't.

And what does Microsoft and Sony do to prevent it? Create the infrastructure to defend against it but also hand down the cost to you? You ready for $50 a month online subscription fees? $100?

This is a much more complicated problem then walking over to someone and giving them a punch in the mouth. Don't be so reductive.

And if Sony / Microsoft gave it's customers free stuff (which for the sake of this lets claim lizard squad kids all have xbl/PSN accounts) they'd be getting rewarded for the damage they did. They would stay winning and still laugh in your face for what they did. You don't win in this situation either way. This is all at a loss for everyone involved. There is no compensation for this and there shouldn't be. Go soak your head and cool off. That's your reward.

Why isn't it preventable? So ANY online service in the world can be taken down like this? I refuse to believe that.

So there's absolutely nothing that can be done in the future to prevent ddos attacks? I mean somebody out there should invent some chit real quick

If you want someone to commit violence over a video game DDOS, you have fucking problems. Period.

You have absolutely no clue. I've been one of those support people at a company suffering from a DDoS attack. The combined weight of being nearly powerless mixed with the expectations from management is crushing. The long, long hours sat there firefighting and working with upstream suppliers.

It doesn't matter that it's videogames, it could be anything else, it's a group of people preventing thousands to millions of others from using a product that they purchased, for their own personal amusement. You don't think that they deserve a smack in the mouth?

LOL, what the fuck ever, man. What Kim dotcom is doing is rewarding this kind of activity. Giving a bit of compensation to your affected customer base who are paying for this service is merely an act of appreciation.
And then when the next DDOS attack happens everyone is going to want more compensation. And then again. And again. See the slippery slope that happens there?

I think better compensation would be Microsoft and Sony going after these people and making examples out of them, personally.

Hopefully MS or Sony will sink some money into finding these knuckleheads and go after them for financial loss. If you can go after them criminally, attack their parents financially.

Hopefully they'll sink some money into not having completely shit servers. This wouldn't be an issue at all if they stepped up their service and security.

To be honest, if it's very hard to prevent DDoS attacks, I'm worried about the future about how people can get away with these attacks so easily.

you are refusing to believe the truth then. any service can be DDOS'd, it's just that the larger ones (google, amazon, facebook) have exponentially more capacity to start with and are correspondingly more difficult to saturate.

with a large enough botnet using enough traffic amplification it could be done though.
