LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

excuse my words, but im caught in the spin and everyone/media is saying its a HACK, so im prone to use that term, even tho DDOS isnt considered as hacking.

My mistake.

The media is ignorant as hell on the subject. Most outlets are at least.

P.s I dont believe anything that Dotcom guy says.

exactly what is it? Media has been pressing on saying its been hacked and xbox has been too.

Then megaupload guy says he grants passes as a incentive for the reptiles to stop hacking PSN?

LOL something smells rotten.

DDoS attack, they're basically flooding the authentication servers with requests meaning legitimate requests can't get through.

Doesn't work for me. Just tried it.

When I hit the circle button after trying to sign in this is what I see.

Succesful Playstation®Network sign in is required for use of Netflix. Please retry.

How cute...Sony.

Yes. Everytime I open Netflix in my PS3, it always takes me to login in my PSN account.
Pressing the circle doesn't work for me. D:
Sorry, fellas(?). I'm stumped. It should have worked..that's odd.

I think I found one of the lizards/ Mafia Films = @lizardmafia

case closed.

XBL is up but Destiny craps out 5 mins after login. I get to Xur and spend a minute in the tower before the rug is pulled out.

Might be a side-effect of the Christmas rush, or just lasting issues with XBL after the attack? Hard to say.

Just ran across this, very interesting, didn't even think of the fact that the systems are just compounding the problem itself

Yup, In fact, one of the biggest DDoS attacks in 2009, that took down Google and Twitter, was unintentional. It was when Michael Jackson died, so many people went to Google and Twitter, they both got DDoSed by the amount of people looking for answers.

It's time to create the NEOGAF SQUAD

Oh wow. Is that true?!

Well, yeah. You think about it, if your console is sitting online and your router disconnects or is switched off, as soon as it's switched back on, your connection to PSN and Live is generally restored.

Now, your router is fine. Your console is connected to it, but you can't connect to the authentication server, what is your console going to keep trying to periodically do?

Between the console automatically trying and people trying to log on, it really compounds the issue. There's a lot of people trying to connect at one time to the same source.

As real as anything on Twitter. So, perhaps? Maybe. KimDotCom's account is legit, that we know, but LizardMafia only claims to be LizardSquad, and they only claim to have stopped the attacks after they received the vouchers, so who really knows?

This shit has turned into a circus.

Yes. Everytime I open Netflix in my PS3, it always takes me to login in my PSN account.
Pressing the circle doesn't work for me. D:

Launch Netflix
When it the PSN login prompt comes up, hit sign in
wait for it to fail
press circle on the error that comes up
Netflix should load up successfully

That's how mines works at least, I just did it.

Man, to be a fly on the wall of the boardroom meetings that must have been going on since the attack ... two days ago? I'm losing my sense of time.

Honestly though, I can only guess at what must be going on. We don't really know what happened at their datacenters and with their DDoS mitigation company. I actually expected PSN to be more or less up and running at 90% again by now. That it's not, might mean multiple things:

- There might still be an attack going on, that we're just not hearing about?
- There might have been an intrusion attempt that happened during the DDoS, using it as a smokescreen, and now Sony is trying to figure out what was taken or seen?
- They might be using this downtime to integrate more solutions from the DDoS mitigation partner?
- Everyone that has keys to the PSN server room is on holiday with their cellphones off? (This is a joke).

So who knows. It might be all of the above, minus that last one.

Both Sony and MS have DDoS Mitigation. Sony uses www.prolexic.com while MS has their own home-spun system.

Thanks a lot for the good reply!
I was just wondering if a DDoS attack can cause any annoying damage even though the attack stopped.

A server bug that caused the game to DDos its own servers because it was constantly trying to reconnect.

But please, continue to warrior away.

Uhh yeah I know all about that, who says thats exactly whats happening now?? Just cause mr Docom says so?

I would think most of europe is not on their ps4 right now

This is mostly my fault. I bought a PS4 this morning. Sorry folks.

I couldn't even create an account earlier so not sure if I can even play TLOU (physical copy) when I get home from work later.

Its a logical explanation. Unless you have a better one, you would be better served not making snide comments about peoples tags because they might be saying something negative about your corporation of choice.

I wish I owned a copy of Wolfenstein right now. I wouldn't even care about gaming online. Netflix still works.

I don't even like Destiny anymore and I'm pissed that I can't play it.

Depending on the type of attack used, a big DDoS can certainly have a long-lasting effect, not just at the target location, but any servers (like ISPs) along the way. Servers routing the DDoS traffic might run out of bandwidth, disk space, memory, or just plain crash. Routing tables could get mangled, making those servers unable to do their job. Raaaarely, something might overheat and just fry, nixing the hardware. "Echos" of the DDoS, like "Backscatter" could be bouncing around between several points for hours, if not days, if things aren't sorted out quickly.
