Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

"I mean, the last time I heard from Vinny he sent me a text message that said he was taking some personal time. But I just figured that meant he was having another kid, he does that a lot."

They just kept sending the paycheques. Did no one notice that?!
No quotes because I'm QUOTING FROM MEMORY.

Very inspired video... I bet Alex could at least find work as an actor in that terrible, dark timeline.

Surprisingly, I've been consistently agreeing with Brad's arguments on day one.

DOTA 2 has continued to have a huge impact on the gaming world in its second year of release. Look at how big The International has become. But the others seemed eager to dismiss it not because it's a bad choice for old game of 2014, but because "LOL DOTA BRAD DOTA HERP DERP" which is a pretty shitty reason.

That's a weird one imo because that's just a product of the genre. Dota, League of Legends, Smite, etc. have all had massive changes over the year, as have games like WoW and Marvel Heroes. League is a bigger game (11.5 million concurrent for WC4 compared to "more than 2 million" for TI), WoW has had more dramatic changes with a whole expansion, massive stat rebalances, sweeping class changes, etc. So if we're going by criteria of changes and size those games should be on there as well. You have to look at the game itself rather than the moba genre being impactful, otherwise there are better games to choose based on popularity or # of changes.

Is Walking Dead 2 Season Two a strong enough contender for it to be brought up during the Best Story category? I haven't gotten around to playing it.

Okay... here's a transcript from the last bombcast, slightly paraphrased except for the bolded.

- Yo Tie Fighter got re-released
- Tie Fighter is one of the best games ever made
Jeff: That said, none of us have played it

- Haha

(Timestamp: 31:22)

And if they mean the re-release... OKAY, but it isn't like it was a remaster or anything, it's the same game they originally released.

LOL I know! Like, if they're not going to speak literal facts for the entire three hours, why do they even podcast at all? Games journalism is so fucking stupid.

You DO realize that Jeff's favorite game of last generation is a racing game, right?
They're visually racist against racing games. It's a rote thing that racing games look good and realistic. And all of them are reaching for that same style. Except Mario Kart.

But Driveclub is arguably the most accomplished of its type and arguably should've at least been on the deliberation list.

It will probably be brought up, but no one on staff seems very fond of that game, so I doubt they'll go into much detail. But the best thing to do is to just assume that every game will get spoiled, these podcasts are spoiler city.

Alex and Patrick didn't like it, and I think they're the only ones that played it.

Alex's hate for TTG's stuff this year kinda bums me out.

The Divinity talk got a little weird. I understand the comparisons to X-Com, but was it forgot that a lot of traditional CRPGs were turn based? Divinity is very much a throwback with some shine.

Alex and Pat have been really down on it and Jeff doesn't like WD. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't discuss it much if at all.

But who knows- stay on your toes!

Edit: beaten. Posting from phone :P

Driveclub is the new Kane and Lynch of Jeff's career, GG Gianbomb, you had a good run.

On a serious note though, I think it would kind of be shitty if Driveclub got nominated or won after having it's key graphical feature added in months later a patch, if anything Driveclub deserves to win most needing of a delay award.

Yeah, that was weird. I'm not exactly sure where the whole turn-based strategy = not RPG sentiment was coming from, but at least Vinny tried to set the record straight.

The comparison to XCOM was completely irrelevant. Aside from being turn-based there's very little actually in common with the two.

It's clear from their final conversation on the award Drive Club would not have got it even if they clearly hadn't remembered it existed. It's a driving game that looks good but has no real style or pleasing astethic.

In the end GB GOTY is fighting a corner and no one cares about Drive Club. Mario Kart would likely be their favourite looking racer.

Or most disappointing in a lot of ways, with the botched launch, the delayed PS+...

Oh man, I want to listen to today's podcast on my long run but not knowing if Valiant Hearts gets spoiled there or in Best Moment is a gamble.

What are these nominees for best story o_o

Wolfenstein is probably the stupidest thing thus far. Wow.
