Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Damn that Tropical Freeze discussion. I mean, whatever, but it was painful. It's a shame that none from the crew played the game extensively...well I guess Dan did but it was not enough.

We can all continue to like things that weren't selected for awards, right?

Agreed. Or just keep it off the list. This has just been slowing down these podcasts for no real good reason ever since they started doing that. we already know what they think about the games they mention in that category through reviews and QLs, so what's the point of mentioning something just for a 2 minute recap of the review?

Guilty Gear was a bit of a throw in to the best looking list and it ended up winning.

Part of their process.

And these aren't podcasts, they're the actual deliberations, so it doesn't slow anything down.

The Fall, slight ones for Far Cry 4, Dragonopinia however you spell it are the ones I recall off the top of my head. Not sure about timestamps since i'm on my phone.
thanks. anyone have a more definitive list, with timestamps? and are they out of nowhere or do they preface the spoilers at all to give a chance to skip ahead?

"just don't listen to one of your favorite podcasts unless you have played ALL the games" as they jokingly said last year is a very poor policy

You will have enough time to quickly bring your hands to your ears and yell LALALALA until they're done talking.

Luftrausers? Seriously? jesus that's a bad pick

and that's before it beats Donkey Kong

The music in Luftrausers is great, and more importantly it's actually intertwined with the game in a way that makes it a soundtrack only possible in a video game... whilst still being dirty as fuck in an immensely enjoyable way.

Donkey Kong is kind of boring. Aka the most dangerous thing a soundtrack can be if it expects me to give a fuck about it.

To each their own I guess, the first thing I thought playing luftrausers was this would be a good podcast game.

Vinny saying "the Ropa" being positive to the game was a secret hint at "the Danganronpa Rope-a-dope" still to come on Giant Bomb Game of the Year 2014.

That's definitely true. I wouldn't say Luftrausers is my favourite game soundtrack this year, because ultimately as awesome as the sound and the trick is, it's still very, well, small. (Personally, I say it's D4, Mario Kart 8 and Shovel Knight.)

I feel like I remember Patrick saying nice things about dark souls 2 when he was first playing it. That seemed like a pretty harsh turn.

I feel like the 6 months leading up to Watch Dogs was telling me not to buy Watch Dogs.

I was hoping that Drew would just be Raiden.

Surprised that Watch_Dawgs took it. Destiny is disappointed in the most profound way. Even people who really liked it felt it was disappointing.

Obligatory disagreement post.

No way Watch Dogs is more disappointing than Destiny.

I think they're different situations. When playing Destiny you see what it could have been, the potentially amazing game within it. With Watch underscore Dogs the reveal and early talk made it seem like THE next gen game. The graphics in the reveal were amazing, the potential to control and hack a world seemed like something that would be truly next gen, having such an interactive and living world would be a paradigm shift. What we got was another generic Ubisoft game but this time with a hacking motif. The game that was released was so far short of the game that was implied. With Destiny, even up to release, people weren't sure what exactly it was, so it's a disappointment in that it could be something greater, but it wasn't heralded as a showcase of the new gen or the like. WD is definitely the more disappointing one to me.

The Smash Bros Quicklook in the recap was just what I wanted the first time instead of just Brad and Dan fussing around with Smash Tour.

Okay guys with best story being in this one can anyone tell me if these games have spoilers and if so how big?

Dangonrompa 2 (will be so surprised if this does)
Sunset Overdrive (though this really is the moments more than story I guess)
Valiant Hearts
Walking Dead Season 2 (given that they all seemed rather 'ehh' about this gonna be surprised if it's there'.

Guilty Gear wasn't thrown in, then immediately dismissed by the person putting it on the list. Jeff and Jason wanted it to win and argued for it.

There are so few games I actually care about the music when heard outside the context of actually playing it. I like the music in Metroid Prime 2, but if you listen to it by itself, it's barely above ambience. Even something like Hotline Miami, I don't care to ever listen to it by itself.

I haven't played enough DKCTF to see if it works in the game but the way it was presented was hilariously fucked. But if no one played it, no one played it.

None of those games are spoiled in the Day 2 podcast.
Valiant Hearts will be spoiled in the best moment category.

Dan bringing up Ground Zeroes was kind of sad, because there was zero sense that he was aware of how fucking gross the little story that game has is.

I think they're in a similar spot, though I still think Destiny was more disappointing. Watch_Dogs started to look mediocre a few months out, especially after the delay and sudden radio silence from Ubisoft regarding the game. I think plenty of people lowered their expectations, but still felt underwhelmed. However - if you compare that initial E3 pitch to the final product.. that's a strong case for "Biggest Letdown".

Destiny though, hot damn. People were singing that game's praises, convinced it was the second coming - even during Activision's embargo horseshit. Bungie spun such a lofty illusion about what that game was, and strung people along right until the last minute. It's a shell of a game. A structure without any substance to apply it to. That's disappointing.

The Fall is great. And it only took me two hours to beat.

It's fantastic. The writing in that game is absolutely stellar.

Also, while Destiny was my most disappointing game of the year, Watch_Dogs was up there for sure. That E3 reveal trailer got me hyped about the game like few other trailers have for any game, ever. And then the game came out... I guess you could argue that there were signs that the game wasn't going to live up to that promise, but the game was still highly disappointing compared to the initial hype.

Also, great videos so far. Wonder where it goes.

Have to listen to that most disappointing discussion.

Sure watch dogs was lame and lacking in next gen-ness but at least it was a game with stuff to do.

Destiny also had all those next gen expectations but I think it would have felt lacking and behind the times if it released 5 years ago.

I think its more because Watch Dogs was the first look at next-gen. And it ended up just being like every other Ubisoft game from last gen. Even down to the very visuals it blew everyone away with when it was revealed.
