Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Catching up on the podcasts now, but DRIVECLUB being left out of best looking game is beyond egregious. Hoooollly shit haha. Love these end of the year Giant Bomb podcasts.

I love the soundtrack in Tropical Freeze but man if your only experience was what they heard in the podcast, yeah Id cut it too

Watch_Dogs was a worse game than Destiny but I don't know how much of a newborn you have to be to have had high expectations of it

Given that E3 demo?? Think time has taken some of the edge off. If destiny was the early year launch and WD the late, no one would have a problem with the choice.

I've tried to play watch dogs this week. It's awful. I don't want to play it. I've tried destiny. It's pretty bad but I keep going back to it.

Compared to the hype around the game when the first E3 trailer hit, that game is profoundly disappointing. It's just fucking boring, and doesn't even look that good.

Remember that the Driveclub weather update wasn't out at the time this was recorded. Going by Danny O'Dwyer's twitter feed - the 2nd podcast was recorded on 4th December. The weather patch came out on the 7th December.

Not that would of necessarily changed their opinion on it for Best Looking Game.

Vinny's survivalist is the only entertaining part of the the videos so far. Prior years set the bar pretty high, but 2014's concept seems limp. Hopefully Jeff & Dan redeem it.

Anyone keeping an "ostensibly" count for the podcasts?

Have to losten to that most disappointing discussion.

Sure watch dogs was lame and lacking in next gen-ness but at least it was a game with stuff to do.

Destiny also had all those next gen expectations but I think it would have felt lacking and behind the times if it released 5 years ago.

They make a well-reasoned case for Watch Underscore Dogs over Destiny for Most Disappointing, I think. IIRC they basically say that
Destiny is a disappointing, insulting shell of a game and that Watch_Dogs was supposed to herald the start of next-gen gaming and set the bar for the generation to come, which it... did not do. W_D was not merely disappointing, its game design was a depressing, disturbing regression back into the era of GTA3 clones. It also managed to disappointed Vinny the most, which is a criminal offense in the States, and the clear real reason why it won Most Disappointing.

Quite the top 10 line-up tomorrow: Xavier Woods, Scott Benson, John "Cowboy" Bellomy, Maya Kramer, Will Smith, SWERY. Palmer Lucky coming up on Monday!

On to listen to/watch the rest of today's content. The podcast has been great so far (1 hour left).

Man, Will Smith, John Romero, and SWERY? It's crazy how many celebrities do top tens for Giant Bomb.

Myggen's new avatar will be great

Hard pick between Destiny & Watch_Dogs for most disappointing. Ultimately I think either is deserving of the award but I personally would have gone with Destiny. Simply because once we got close to release and started seeing regular game play of Watch_Dogs most people kind of saw how shitty it looked.

Destiny however had those Alpha/Betas that people seemed to immensely enjoy, not knowing that the final release would be just as shallow of an experience.

I heard Patrick say it in today's podcast.

Ostensibly Doom Counter: ONE.

Keep in mind, you mean the E3 2012 demo.

The 2013 demo, and playable stuff, was shitty looking. Everyone went "Wait, this seemed way cooler from last year."

People who had expectations of Watch_Dogs after 2013, when the game got delayed because it was too bad for Ubisoft's holiday release, were crazy.

I knew Jeff's rant was coming and it didn't disappoint. That said, I think the right game 'won' Most Disappointing.

It's a shame 80 Days didn't get a shout in the best short-time category.

Loving the video stuff thus far. Can't wait to see Dan's segment(s)!

really thought Destiny will win most disappointing.

Watch_dog u can see from mile ahead its not gonna be good, but Destiny playing it then realizing WTF am I doing

It was, though Patrick was obviously going to take it down immediately for all the right reasons.
No, the right reasons were that Ground Zeroes basically has no story, which Brad and Jeff made clear. The "grossness" on its own should not be a reason to remove the game from the list. Although, clearly, vagina/uterus bomb didn't bother me as much you.

The only questionable thing about ground zeroes that I would disqualify it for is Paz making moves on Chico after being raped. That isn't exactly unheard of, especially considering the circumstances, but I consider that scene superfluous.

To be clear, I'm with you on the whole Paz/Chico/rape stuff being more "the thing" more than vagina bomb, which is just stupid on a level I can't condone nor necessarily disapprove of.

Anyway, if it's grossness for the sake of being edgy/shocking, that's bad. Definitely "keep this thing the fuck away from an award nomination" bad. And Ground Zeroes is that. If I thought the story managed to justify it, I wouldn't say a word.

I hear you.

But after the Beta, couldn't the same things be said about Destiny?

Both are huge disappointments to be sure. Such a waste, both of them.

(I was kinda crazy a bit... I had high hopes for WD even after the delay. Many games that were delayed this year turned out great (South Park, Shadow, etc))

I don't think any of them but Jeff even played the game and he played it before release, so he didn't see any of those weather effects.

so many of these lists are all like DID YOU BUY NIDHOGG

yes i di-

WHY DIDNT YOU BUY NIDHOGG YET

but i d-

ARGHSGHSGLK NIDHOGG
I actually bought NIDHOGG today, because it's really cheap for the first time on Steam (75% off). It was always way overpriced.

Man, Patrick went in hard on Unity, and Jeff was rarin' to go on Destiny. Was anticipating Brad's defense, tho, lol.

Watch_Dogs did indeed suck from a promise standpoint, but it's been such a harried year for all of the choices they mentioned.

Halo is ruining franchise goodwill, as is Unity, and it's going to be interesting to see how Destiny 2 sells (I'm sure the hype machine will help the latter).

I feel like most people had kind of accepted that WD would be An Ubisoft Game well before it actually came out, while even after the beta there was a large segment of people still believing in a mythical version of Destiny that would be so much more. Which made the retail release and the "wait, that's it" level of content and the bizarre lack of story and awful writing and fucked up loot even more shocking once it was actually in people's hands for real.

Even with the wheather effects for Drive Club, the award isn't best looking game eventually after being patched.

I haven't played Xrd yet, but of the footage I seen, it does look like a game that should have won a category of Best looking or Best Visuals or whatever it was.
