Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Lol at Dan trying so hard to get Donkey Kong music into top 3 lol. Luftrausers' music is so godly though. Well deserved.

"...one last chance"

edit: I really like that BAKOON refers to Uruks as "Shreks".

edit2: For those wondering about Patrick's history with Evil Bong 3:

I'm at Most Disappointing discussion on the podcast now and wow Brad was totally silent while Jeff was ranting about Destiny lol

Also, Samantha Kalman's Top 10 is really interesting.

The thing about the GZ scene with Paz, it perfectly illustrates how cruel and evil Skull Man is. If that is a turning point of BB becoming evil, it's a damn strong reason for turning evil and becoming disillusioned with the world.

That's the point of that scene. It's the reason why it exists. It wouldn't be put in there in order to be misogynistic, but in order to say 'Yeah the antagonist is really fucked up. He's not like The Boss, Liquid, Solidus, who had good reasons for being antagonistic. No, this boss is here because he's cruel and disgusting, he's the thing that makes Big Boss into a monster. This is the story where Big Boss becomes a monster, and how more befit than to pit him against a monster while he is still a hero.'

And that's how I interpreted it. That's how I see it. Everyones going 'Wow! We get to play as Big Boss in this big world! How cool!' No. By the end of it, if Kojima doesn't make you disgusted at Big Boss, than he failed.

Especially after what we found out about the Torture Report, we know how nasty war can do to people.

I found this from Rami's Top 10 list really interesting:

Audio is critical in horror games, and the adaptive audio engine in Alien: Isolation is brilliant. Where normally the audio in a game is based on many different things, here the audio is triggered only by things the player is aware of directly. No audio cues that something bad is about to happen, or that you’ve manage to lose the alien. It’s the opposite of what we’re used to in games, but it might just be a new default.

I didn't pick up on that myself.

I had to take down my AC Unity poster. Sad how bad Ubisoft can make their series. I loved the Ezio series. I couldn't get into AC3 regardless of how cool the aesthetics were. Being honest the last time I was excited was when Todd McFarlane did the poster for ACIV, but that was it. Back with the AC2 series I could finish them in 3 or 5 days. I wasn't about to finish III or IV. I thought III lacked an interesting environment to explore. There were too many wooden cabins and not enough depth to the world (character depth matching the world around him). It felt too much of a random chase through the woods.

This was the best part about ACIV:

I loved the multiple encounters in Dark Souls 2. You're given more content. You aren't finishing one large level and ending with one whole boss. I like having several encounters and multiple entry zones.

They shouldn't of tried adding all the nice menu features to the MCC. Make the basic game and make simpler menus.

As much as I love DA:I I can't really imagine any of them going to bat for it for GOTY even if they had finished it. The game is solid but it has its fair share of problems both technically and gameplay/story. I'm a huge DA fan (all Origins, fuck DA2) and this game hit some notes for me but there's still a lot to be desired. I can't really think of any of them that would really get in to it, though. Maybe Vinny but between everything there is to do in that game, him moving and having 2 young children I can't imagine him ever finishing it before his head explodes.

When's the last time Jeff was excited about something fantasy elves and dwarves related though?

Conversation was never gonna go anywhere if he was the one who was furthest along in the game.

I just came in here to say how much I loved Patrick's FUCK YOU to assassin's creed unity. I want more rage Patrick.

Does that game really ends how Patrick said it did? Like a giant fuck you to the story of the other games? As a person that actually enjoyed that stuff i can't believe they would do that.....i might want to spoiled on that stuff just to see what fuck up it is.

Cutting Assassins for Halo was the wrong decision. Especially because it didn't seem like anyone was actually arguing for it to be on there while multiple people were doing it for Assassins.

To be clear, I'm with you on the whole Paz/Chico/rape stuff being more "the thing" more than vagina bomb, which is just stupid on a level I can't condone nor necessarily disapprove of.

Anyway, if it's grossness for the sake of being edgy/shocking, that's bad. Definitely "keep this thing the fuck away from an award nomination" bad. And Ground Zeroes is that. If I thought the story managed to justify it, I wouldn't say a word.

The only thing gross is the idea that there should be a more "sanitized" and "clean" torture scene in a piece of art. It's SUPPOSED to be disgusting and it's SUPPOSED to make you feel uncomfortable, much like the rape scene in Precious is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable. But of course, nobody's going to say "fuck Lee Daniels" the way people say "fuck Kojima" without blinking because VIDEO GAMES and JAPAN!!!!!

However I DO agree with Brad and Jeff that the game's story was minimal and probably shouldn't be up there. But wanting a game stricken from the proceedings because it's too offensive? That's absurd.

And fuck Patrick for yet again ceaselessly shitting on a Metal Gear Solid game because he doesn't like it, or it doesn't gel with his askew sensibilities.

"gross" has been around in the gaming scene for a while. It sounds odd unless you're talking about some brutality or body parts going everywhere. I don't see the movie industry getting that kind of... oops nevermind. I think for whatever reason he put it in there; that he should be left alone. It's not like a director sits down to read comments about their work. That's rather pointless. We can cringe when it comes to video games from another era and now we're taking them too seriously. It's too diverse and also too random. There's no joint coalition of video game designers. There's always going to be a mix bag of everything available to someone who has money. The ratings boards, but they don't care. They rate it before someone gets offended by it.

I love the original MGS. I love the setting, the music, the controls, and the characters. It's by far the most engulfing MGS title to me personally. Make it rain chaff all year round!!!

I wouldn't say Jeff was exactly excited about DA:I though. He mentioned at one point that his girlfriend was the one playing it a ton, I don't know if he personally had played a bunch but yeah, at no point did he seem very in to the game.

That is pretty fucking great.

That is pretty fucking great.

That's my point though. When everybody is looking to Jeff to provide input on a game about elves and orcs they're already lost.

The Donkey Kong music samples were hilarious. Luftrausers absolutely deserved the win.

The "most disappointing" discussion was definitely cathartic to listen to. Somebody should do a "profoundly" count, though. I felt like it was being said every other sentence for a while there. I guess that just speaks to how poor and pathetic the game industry has been this year. Profundity abounds.

Oh my bad, I misunderstood you. Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. I fucking love DA:I but I recognize the game's faults and totally understand that not everyone is gonna feel the same way about it. I had zero thoughts going in to GB's GOTY stuff that DA:I was gonna get any nods.

I really thought they were gonna say "fuck it" and keep all four. I fault them for their top 3 in that category but it seems like a crime that Unity isn't in there too.

There's a lot of lows on the podcast but the business model comparison of Hearthstone to Dota was probably the worst.

Alright, after doing extensive research on DK Tropical Freeze, I have no idea why GAF loves it so much.

It's alright no doubt.

But Luftrausers tho.

Transistor is my Soundtrack of the year for sure. Shovel Knight too... hell, BoI: Rebirth is better than DK:TF imo.

I can't speak for DKC:TF... I haven't played it. I just can't stop listening to the vocal tracks for Transistor. I honestly thought it was a shoe-in.

I did not agree with them at all about Mario Kart. How were they so flippant about it? That Mario big band or whatever they call the musicians behind that music are phenomenal!

If you're the kind of music listener that skips to the middle of a song when trying to determine it's quality, then you have no business handing out awards to game soundtracks. They should've just taken Dan's word for it.

Anyone doing anything in particular while listening to the deliberation podcasts? For whatever reason, last year I wound up playing Receiver a lot while listening to them, it's very simple and pocast-friendly but there's something about the whole "process" of the game (even though it's not really a "game" exactly) that is compelling and easy to do mindlessly for big chunks of time.

I advise either cooking or painting a room. Both have been my best experiences listening to the gotycasts

So if Brad says Destiny game of the year

Just go with what Brad says becasue

I'll never understand Destiny not winning most disappointing, ever.

I think it's because people make up reasons for enjoying it beyond that first good two months. That's not a bad thing, but at a technical standpoint I see the bar being set almost too high. A few generations ago it was okay, but now it has to come good, presumably fast, and most importantly better than what we already had. In short, money and fame made Destiny. Bungie at its core didn't make Destiny better, they made Halo. Halo made Destiny. This is when better graphics and available options work as a disadvantage.

No one else really played it so Dan had to justify it and completely failed to when given the opportunity. When he desperately tried to go to IGN's top 3 tracks list, it was hilarious when even he was repulsed by it.

I think David Wise is a genius, but DKTF did not come anywhere near MK in my opinion. Dan should have been fighting for that instead.

I have no doubt Brad will include Destiny in his GOTY, might even be #1. He might fight for it in the podcast... I don't blame him for it. I thought it should have gotten Biggest Disappointment... but despite all its faults, Brad enjoyed it a shitload.

People want to give him crap for it not getting the Biggest Disappointment (I certainly thought it would) but they nailed it with Watch_Dogs. Its hard to remember all the hype that game got before the delay, even Jeff mentions it was a different game when he got to preview it.

With that said Brad still stole away Saints Row The Third's title shot. #neverforget
