Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Don't you already get that in MGS3? Admittedly, I don't pay super close attention to the Metal Gear lore but I felt like the end of MGS3 explains the motivations of BB quite well.

Spoilers because I know some people are getting their first MGS exposure through GB-
Spoilers for MGS3/Peace Walker/GZ-
MGS3 causes BB to become disillusioned with the governments of the world. The US betrayed him, the Boss betrayed him but simply because she was fighting for her country by being a triple agent. The US kinda of strong armed BB into killing the Boss at the end of it, and this gives BB the idea of creating a group of soldiers that fight under no ideology or nation. Peace Walker deals with pretty much the creation of Mother Base being a home for many soldiers. In this phase of time, BB is simply trying to give a home to people who only know how to fight. They even allow the UN to send inspectors to Mother Base, because BB is simply trying to live in the world and be for hire. But the UN inspection is simply a cover for the unit XOF(Currently unknown who they're fighting for, but it's probably Zero/Patriots/UN since it was all a set up and various countries downplayed the destruction of MB) to destroy Mother Base. Paz fits in all this because she was a spy originally but kinda fell for the idea of Mother Base, so she ends up being caught by XOF and eventually killed. Like the Boss, she was used by the government and simply disposed of.

The point is, Big Boss has been through betrayal so many times that he probably snaps at seeing his dream be destroyed, at how cruel XOF was to his own people(Chico/Paz), that he pretty much starts being evil. The trailers for The Phantom Pain kinda make Kaz look like a villain in that he condones torture and well, disagrees with things BB does, but Big Boss will be right up there with him in cruelty by the end of it.

That's the end game here. BB starts out as a sympathetic character who is universally loved, even knowing that he's the enemy in MG1/2, and Kojima needs to shatter that.

I suspect Dan won't be the contender that people made him out to be. At least not just yet, he needs to experience his first GB GOTY deliberation before he can go back and plan for GOTY 2015.

I can't wait for Dan's inevitably passionate fight to have Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain as 2015's #1 GOTY. We will all see what Dan is truly capable of then.

Haha Dan is passive and chill in almost every aspect of his life, I think anyone expecting him to be the type to go blue in the face arguing in the GOTY podcasts the way some others do will be sorely disappointed.

Naw MGS5 will be number 2 with zelda number 1, Dan gonna filibuster the everything next year.

I agree. Can anyone see Dan being caught up in the infamous 'left trigger, right trigger' debate the same way Brad did against Jeff ?

Jeff will never back down whereas (from what I know of Dan so far), would easily cave as soon as any discussion becomes slightly heated. Not a knock against the guy, he just doesn't have the same assertive personality.

I don't think anyone can outlast brad (remember mass effect 3?)

There's a 90% chance brad resists all comers for no mans sky even if it's slightly dissappointing compared to expectations

Brad could have been a lawyer in another life lol

Btw really hoping for a Troy bakery or a Nolan Northie for Troy baker

Yeah but since no one but Dan had heard the game in a proper setting it never had a chance anyway. There is nothing he could have said to change anyone's mind. How could you articulate why these songs that someone has never heard are better than this song that they love?

I just feel like it's better to side with the guy who has heard all or the most rather than others that heard one side out of context. The honorable Judge Shoemaker should have deemed it inadmissible or something, I don't know, lol.

And in the interest of transparency, I'll admit I'm a big David Wise fanboy. So that's where most of this energy is coming from. I have nothing but respect for all of these gentleman.

I remember Jeff put Syndicate above Mass Effect 3 on the top 10 list that year. But yeah, fuck Brad for defending the games he genuinely loves.

Jeff genuinely loved Syndicate. Brad's defence of Mass Effect 3 was floored however in that he criticised other games for info dumps then claimed he probably wouldn't have loved ME3 so much if it wasn't for one of the DLCs. Said DLC happened to be nothing more than a huge info dump.

Are you saying Jeff always makes perfect sense in the things he likes and doesn't like? Are you saying anyone does?
It's no secret that Brad can get really excited for the weirdest things and that it sometimes defies reason but implying that it's not genuine is a bit weird.

Also, who cares. He likes the things he likes and they end up on random lists on the Internet. Big deal...

Deep, man...

But, yeah, that's the beauty of the Giant Bomb deliberations being out there for all to hear. You really see that it's just a big discussion of people defending what they like (and like to hate), which is great!

It seems like every year they keep bringing up these games I've never heard of. I had never heard of Jazzpunk or Velvet Sundown before today.

I don't know why SSB was forgotten about so quickly. That game has the best soundtrack by default. You can't fuck with a Smash Bros soundtrack.

Dan's gonna fight hard to make Tail of the Sun 2015's "Best Old Game."

This is absurd. I've never met the developer of Threes, I don't even know their name, and I think what happened with 2048 is repugnant. You're really selling short the cloning problem in mobile games.

The most tragic part about this, to me, was not that the game was cloned (although, that is terrible indeed). It was the fact that 2048 got all the media attention, including, if I'm recalling correctly, an article from the LA Times. I do think that Threes! gets its dues. But things like this happen all the time sadly. For instance, everyone knows Minecraft. Show someone Infiniminer and they might think you are showing them a knockoff of Minecraft when in fact Infiniminer was released first. I don't see the creator of Infinimer closing a 2.5 Billion dollar deal.

I guess I have some more catching up to do before Phantom Pain. My interpretation was that Big Boss
was never really an evil guy, he always had good intentions but he does some reprehensible things because he has to if he ever hopes to succeed against the real bad guys who have no limits on what they will do. He's framed as "evil" because he opposes the Patriots and of course they manipulate you into thinking that.

So it seems weird for him to have a "vader moment" where he loses it and becomes are murderous psycho. As a casual fan though, its totally possible that I've missed out on some key stuff.

I'd agree with you if they all argued equally, do you think there's a chance drew's or Jason's favorite game will even be in the top 3? Unless there's overlap they won't. It also doesn't matter at the end of the day, im legit amazed at brad's ability

Dan never backs either, THis is a guy who hated anime for years without even see one them. The problem is that he doesnt have any help. I mean in the soundtrack part he was up against people who all ready made up their minds.

As a huge fan of the series, I'd say that you are absolutely right.
Big Boss isn't villainous and MGS4 goes into detail to explain that. I also feel like the end of MGS3 will forever be the biggest paradigm shift in Big Boss's ideals. BB is who we know today because of the events of MGS3.

So yeah, late to all this and blah blah. Not listened or seen any day 2 stuff yet.

Day 1 stuff:
Biggest Surprise definitely shoulda gone to PT. 1. Released same day as announced (or something right?) 2. Is a teaser for a new Silent Hill and is super hard to beat 3. Looks fantastic 4. Even though it's made by Konami that fact wasn't known at the time and was part of the surprise. It was much more of a surprise than South Park geting made and being a good game coming from those devs and the input from the creators.

Best graphics and brushing off PT and not mentioning Driveclub and having Destiny in the top 3? GG definitely deserved it as it's a beautiful game that is also super clever in it's looks due to making 3D models look like high quality 2D animation. Lack of Driveclub talk was crazy though, I get they don't like the game (not played it myself) but it looks insanely good, especially with that weather patch.

The theme for this years recap videos is super cool. Glad to see Danny being put to good use.

I just realized watch dogs is a daily deal on steam today! 50% OFF! Right in time to help celebrate it's award for Most Disapointing Game of the Year!!

I don't think you know how music works, its not the first ten seconds of a few tracks played from an iPhone's external speakers. Hence why I question it because you'd best experience music from a game by playing said game and experiencing all of the music.

They don't all play every game that comes out.

So I take it there were no ending spoilers for either Dragon Age or Sunset Overdrive in the Day 2 podcast? Think I can listen to it safely then. Actually not sure if any of them finished DA:I so I might be good on that front for the duration of the GOTY podcasts.

They actually dont really spoil anything. THe only thing is the fallen and maybe Banner saga.

They seem pretty locked into the idea that Best Surprise should be the opposite of Most Dissapointing. Low expectations for a game that ended up being absolutely fantastic. Ironically, it means a "surprise" game like P.T isn't really eligible.

Damnit. I shouldn't have clicked on those spoilers since I heard GZ had such little story content and I still managed to spoil myself

i'm an idiot

Big Boss is kind of already a bad guy by a significant margin.

His mission in GZ is to kidnap two people who know too much about MSF. Not to save them, not cause they're being tortured, but because they know too much to be in anyone else's hands. The guards you beat up and kill in GZ are regular ol' US soldiers doing their jobs.

And the prime example of his villainous nature is this line spoken by Otacon's stand in: "Hangar decontamination and document deconstruction are complete." That's not on a good guy's to-do list, that's on Saddam Hussein's. He's already on the bad side here.

I've got to say that I really don't get the love for Mordor. Almost every list, guest or otherwise, is having it in the top 5.

The games fine and all but I really don't get the exuberant love for it.

It's the Nemesis system pulling in all the disparate parts of the game under its umbrella and elevating it above the pack.

The soundtrack part make turn off the podcast for a moment. How can they do DK like that.

It's as though Jeff did that out of context music sampling to sabotage any chance it had of getting on the list. The thing that ticked me off was Brad asking Dan if his enjoyment of the soundtrack was based off of nostalgia when they gave the same award to A Link Between Worlds last year. I never get mad at these, but David Wise should get his.

You really need to watch the Velvet Sundown QL. It is hilarious and up there with one of the best QLs of all time imo

The game itself is more of an GB in-joke than an actual good game though....it's just one of those 'its so bad its good' titles and needs to be played by the right type of people to really 'get it'
