Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I hear you.

But after the Beta, couldn't the same things be said about Destiny?

Both are huge disappointments to be sure. Such a waste, both of them.

(I was kinda crazy a bit... I had high hopes for WD even after the delay. Many games that were delayed this year turned out great (South Park, Shadow, etc))

I think most people liked Destiny after the beta because the thinking was "Oh, this is only the first area! The rest of the game has to be amazing." It was very tip-of-the-iceberg.

Then it turned out to just be a tray of ice.

that's cuz patrick worked in the same office as the developer of threes. which is why he got so upset and wrote those articles on 2048.

it's a great game tho. you should put more time into it if that type of game is your speed,

This is absurd. I've never met the developer of Threes, I don't even know their name, and I think what happened with 2048 is repugnant. You're really selling short the cloning problem in mobile games.

Not trying to get ahead of myself but I'm looking at all the upcoming games of 2015 and all I can think of is how insane the goty podcasts are gonna be.

If you guys take one thing from today's podcast is that you all should buy The Fall, great game even tough the combat (the little of it there is) sucks. Definitely a great pick for best story.

I felt like Watch Dogs showed what it really was throughout 2013 and 2014 before release. Destiny was daylight robbery. Patrick Klepek said he felt robbed or jipped. It was the beta over and over, there's no story rivaling Lord of the Rings. This was Bungie, the next huge game with all that weight behind it. If Ubisoft kept showing 2012 type stuff for Watch Dogs then I would agree.

Jeff's cautious optimism turning to bitter anger towards Destiny over time is what really lead me to lose interest in playing the game, despite loving the art style, pedigree and enjoying the beta. The real breaker for me is the apparent complete lack of meaningful story. I'm still not unconvinced that Destiny shouldn't be the actual winner of that award- it just felt like the crew felt more passionate in their disappointment towards it both over the year and in the cast.

Also, a little disappointed that Killer Instinct Season 2 didn't even get a mention for music (again)- Mick Gordon is a god. That TJ Combo theme might be my new all time favorite fighting game theme. Having never heard the Tropical Freeze music, and only seeing the praise on GAF, I thought the consistent reaction to their playing the soundtrack was hysterical.

GOTY Giant Bomb is best Giant Bomb.

The total drop off is bigger for watch dogs I think, it was just gradual over years rather than a couple of weeks for destiny

Yeah but that's exactly why it's worse, IMO. I was blindsided by it's failure when I saw what Destiny really was, no one saw it coming.

Don't lie, Brad! We all know you're getting a cut of that sweet sweet Threes money!

Did anyone actually expect that shit to be good?

Yeah, there's definitely implied expectations if you're gonna find something to be the most disappointing.

Dan bringing up Ground Zeroes was kind of sad, because there was zero sense that he was aware of how fucking gross the little story that game has is.

To be fair, I didn't realise how gross it was at first either. It seems like you have to get the tapes to find it out explicitly.

The best story part was a real reminder that game stories are pretty damn awful.. it was as if they were struggling to even think of a good story this year.

I still find Destiny more disappointing but I can see where they are coming from on Watch_Dogs and glad it wasn't just Brad filibustering.

Knowing none of them finished Dragon Age Inquisition made me feel something special considering I finished it a couple weeks ago. I do agree with the CSPAN reference.

The sex scene on the train in Wolfenstein was epic. A little forced in Dan's point of view, which I have to agree with him. But they were in a very erotic scene. I couldn't imagine them "not" having sex in any other form of media though.

Far Cry 4 wasn't really amazing in terms of plot. It felt like something we would of all enjoyed 2 generations ago, but the game play feels spot on. I've rarely had any time with it. I need to get that mindless run and gun feeling again.

Destiny was what 15 or less hours then multiplayer. Then it sort of turned into this repetitive grind fest. It wasn't really anything like Diablo 2 where you could farm a boss from checkpoint in the chapter. You needed to run things over and over again. It's very unique, but I don't think it was unique enough for the same people who played over a thousand hours of Halo 1-4 already. I think people new to gaming might find more to it. The grindfest can only get so good until it just disappears from your mental library. You want a pace that keeps up with your expectations. Destiny 2 on the other hand could "possibly" do something greater in that regard. I'd love a better drop system than 1 in a 400th chance. I still get horrible drops and I want to be on there for an hour tops. It needs more content for that 7 hour game session.

For next year they should only allow votes for games that weren't already Quick Looked. It's just going to end up being mostly popular stuff. Where is life and hometown?

And yet last year proves otherwise.

As much as I love DA:I I can't really imagine any of them going to bat for it for GOTY even if they had finished it. The game is solid but it has its fair share of problems both technically and gameplay/story. I'm a huge DA fan (all Origins, fuck DA2) and this game hit some notes for me but there's still a lot to be desired. I can't really think of any of them that would really get in to it, though. Maybe Vinny but between everything there is to do in that game, him moving and having 2 young children I can't imagine him ever finishing it before his head explodes.

Yet in shows like Oz it's a 4-5 minute scene and it's worse than this. They go into detail over something that typically isn't blown out of proportion. It isn't the way MGS is made is what I'd argue. It's throwing way too much fuel to the fire. A story is told with lots of content attached to it. You aren't getting a happy story to everything either. No one would watch a happy ending all the time.

Very true. It was convincing someone on this whole other level. It's a fantastic game for fans, but it kept you in this political seat with this massive world to govern. The bugs would annoy anyone not willing to look over everything else. In other words, "it wasn't Skyrim". Skyrim to an average joe had a 10/10 attached to it. Your first 15 minutes has a dragon appearing out of nowhere. It took me a few weeks. I'd literally remember everything I did after putting it down for a couple days. I agree with you on that. Maybe in the next DA they'll make the quests within the world. Solve the problems while you arrive to them. I could see the whole idea of receiving a quest changing in the years to come. I believe it could be much more dynamic.

I'm glad they threw out what they did. I was shocked by some of their opinions, but it's only going on episode 3 at this time.

The thing about the GZ scene with Paz, it perfectly illustrates how cruel and evil Skull Man is. If that is a turning point of BB becoming evil, it's a damn strong reason for turning evil and becoming disillusioned with the world.

That's the point of that scene. It's the reason why it exists. It wouldn't be put in there in order to be misogynistic, but in order to say 'Yeah the antagonist is really fucked up. He's not like The Boss, Liquid, Solidus, who had good reasons for being antagonistic. No, this boss is here because he's cruel and disgusting, he's the thing that makes Big Boss into a monster. This is the story where Big Boss becomes a monster, and how more befit than to pit him against a monster while he is still a hero.'

And that's how I interpreted it. That's how I see it. Everyones going 'Wow! We get to play as Big Boss in this big world! How cool!' No. By the end of it, if Kojima doesn't make you disgusted at Big Boss, than he failed.
