LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

inFamous: Second Son wouldn't start when I was trying to play it last night. Eventually figgerd out I had to disable internet connection on my PS4 for it to start since it tries to connect to PSN. Damn you, Lizards *shakes fist*

Yeah, I was at a friends house and his digital I:SS didnt start (his console was on primary). Worst of all, my physical copy of Driveclub also didnt start on his console.
A friend of mine also got a physical TLOU gifted for Christmas and he wasnt able to play it till he unplugged the wifi of his PS4.

Dont know why the hell that happens.

Don't listen to him. I just tried changing it back and now I can't get back into PSN.

Can you systematically reproduce this behavior? I'd say the general flakiness of PSN is giving you the results you think changing this setting produces.

But hey, if it works it works. I just don't understand why, in that case.

thats some crazy shit lol

Let's debunk this MTU thing

What is MTU?
MTU stands for "maximum transmission unit", and denotes how big the biggest packets can be.

How can changing my MTU improve my situation?
It can't. Packets vary with sizes. This is about how big the biggest packets can be before they're divided into more packets. They will not handled differently by any routers, especially not with such an insignificant change in size. If you made it a lot lower, you could argue for something else, but most packets are likely smaller than 1500 bytes, anyway. Unless you're dealing with jumbo packets (up to 9000 bytes), routers handle all packets the same.

Then why does this work?
Because PSN is automatically logged into if you were online at some point in the past. You won't get thrown out, but it won't try to re-authenticate you if you fail. When you change your MTU, you reconnect to PSN. Changing MTU has the same effect as going into Settings -> PSN and choosing Sign Out, then clicking Sign In.

Mostly saying sony are really shit...microsoft did better and only took 10 hours to fix
Going by this thread, several of people had problems with Xbox Live after 10 hours, so its not like Microsoft had fixed all and had everything up and running problem free after 10 hours.

Sony's incompetence in fixing PSN is embarrassing.
Honest question, why do you think it takes the time it takes to fix it?

Same thing happened over here. Was playing Guacamelee STCE and PS4 was on primary and it wouldn't load. Turned off the wifi, and poof, it loaded seamlessly.

To be fair people can only talk about their own personal experiences, for me that means xbox live being back on boxing day morning and PSN still down.

I understand that other people's experience vary but I also understand that you have to be careful what you believe on the internet so the only conclusion I can draw with any confidence right now is that for me personally Microsoft's response has been exponentially better than Sony's.

As a secondary point MS status site is also a lot better, more accurate, updated regularly. Twitter seems to be the only place to get info on PSN (@askplaystation) and that just keeps thanking me for my patience! This factors into a feeling that MS are more on top of this.

They probably just don't have good automation in place for brining their servers up/down. That coupled with each different region needing to do things their own way. I don't know how they'll manage to pull off "One Sony" when they can't even manage "One PlayStation".

Yeah, thats fair. His statement seemed to be more in general and not just about his own experience, at least that is how i read it, so i just wanted to mentioned that not everything was fixed after just 10 hours in general.

Hopefully Sony will fix it much faster if the same thing happends again. I think it would be interesting to know why it takes the time that it takes.

That might be it, but isnt it the same with Xbox Live? (thinking about the region stuff). Or is it known that PSN handles regions differently (if yes, why?)?

Yeah exactly, stuff goes wrong it happens, its what you learn from it and what you do in the future that really matters. I'd love to see some kind of apology/post mortem from Sony explaining what they have found and how they will improve it in the future. I'd rather have that than free games frankly!

Indeed. And i agree that a post mortem would definitelly be interesting.

I guess most people are able to connect seeing as this thread has died down a lot?

Been able to connect to PSN and the store since last night (UK), including PS4. Still working today.

Fingers crossed.

I don't see how anyone can reach a solid conclusion without knowing the period, duration and intensity of each attack on both services. Did Lizard Squad commence their attacks on PSN and Xbox Live at precisely the same moment with equal strength?

It's evident from various interviews that at least one leading member has a tremendous amount of contempt for Sony. He simply could not disguise it. Indeed, from the outset, they were targeting Sony some time before they turned their sights to Microsoft. And when those early attempts were met with limited success, they began to express the merits of Microsoft's platform in comparison to Sony's, leading some people to suggest something fishy was going on.

To say nothing of their personal vendetta against Sony Online Entertainment and the harassment of Sony employees, including photographs of a grave stone and a bomb threat.

I haven't been able to get onto PSN (UK) since Christmas Day and I made the mistake of trying to log out and back in, couldn't log back in again :/
Tried again today, same issue until I changed MTU and I'm in.

Very true but this is where better communication could help. MS/Sony seem very coy to mention that they were under a DDOS attack, perhaps if they were just honest* people would cut them more slack? I know I would.

*you can hear the screams already from marketing/branding people!

Edit: In fact honesty could have quoshed all of those your data is being compromised rumours to.

Is Lizard Squad still attacking PSN or is PSN just shit. I mean my Xbox has been fine now for the last two days. All I want to do is access bloody app and I can't, so frustrating.

My guess is that Sony is using this opportunity to implement some extra contingencies in case this sort of thing happens again. It'd be nice to have a little extra communication though.

The lack of response and feedback from Sony is amazing.

I cant understand why some people can access and others cant under the same region.

What? Sony have communicated about what is happening, just because they don't personally text you or tell you face to face doesn't mean they aren't.

Vita has been fine for me the past couple of days now. Managed to get online on my PS4 earlier, got a few challenges come through from people on Driveclub. Haven't checked the PS3. I'm in the UK.

I just hope this gets fully resolved as soon as possible.

MS/Sony seem very coy to mention that they were under a DDOS attack

None of their targets have named the perpetrators or addressed the situation at length. I'm guessing they are keeping quiet for legal reasons.

I've said it before, but i still think its somewhat ironic that they're trying to create a problem that hasnt really been there before

It's easy to imagine how thier defense will play out in court.

Prosecution: You were only trying to improve security, by demonstrating a weakness, is that correct?

Defendant: Yes Sir.

Prosecution: Why, then, did you not provide Sony and Microsoft ample time to identify and improve upon these security flaws. You need only make your point once or twice. {Slams book down on table} Why did you hit them repeatedly, over and over and over?

Defendant: {Looks across to defense attorney}

Prosecution: How does upsetting and depriving millions of children their gift on Christmas morning help improve security at Microsoft?

Barrister: Objection. There's no way Microsoft sold millions of Xbox Ones!

Judge: Objection sustained.

What? Sony have communicated about what is happening, just because they don't personally text you or tell you face to face doesn't mean they aren't.

Hey now, perfectly reasonable expectation. I waited in all day yesterday for Sony to knock on my door, fall to their knee's before me and beg for forgiveness. I now am waiting for the second apology also, for making me wait in all day. They are adding up, and eventually, the queue of Sony employees due at my door will block the street. They should start on that backlog immediately. Thinking of sending Kaz an email informing him of my £10p/h late charges for appointments.
