Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Man, the deliberations for best graphics was really heartbreaking but completely understandable. Really glad Guilty Gear got the recognition though.

Also, lol at Jeff playing tracks of DKC:TF for everyone to hear.

I'm really enjoying this GOTY stuff.

That Most Disappointing discussion really drove home how awful of a year it was for games, though
 
I know they've stated before that they don't really care too much about this GOTY stuff but it's pretty darn apparent when listening to them. To me it just showcases how moot it is to try to do anything other than individual lists for this kind of thing.

I really feel for some of the guys trying to champion a pick that's important for them just to be shot down because the others didn't play it.
Hitman Go, Assassin's Creed Unity and Donkey Kong/Smash Bros from the latest episode for example
 
Kind of weird just how quickly MGS2 was dismissed. It was probably the most important non-2014 game on the site this year.

Yeah they dismiss some stuff way too fast for no real reason and it shows. It's a weird push and pull but when Alex or Drew makes a impassioned speech for a game and then there's just this silence and a "Well..." it just feel weird.

This was also recorded before they finished MGS2, even before Drew had seen anything of the end of the game. He didn't fight for the game at all since he hadn't seen the last few hours.

They've never stated that they don't care about the GOTY stuff. Jeff has said that a GOTY list is silly, but not that they don't care about the deliberations and all the other categories. These deliberations have gotten incredibly heated in the past for a reason.

Ehh, spoilers kinda have the opposite effect on me. It makes me want to see it for myself. I bought The Fall as soon I heard what they said about it.
 
I'm surprised South Park didnt even get a mention in the graphics discussion. I wouldnt expect it to make it far, but its really striking how much they nailed the look of show.
 
Have to say that this community voting for games to play has been disappointing so far. We got to see the exact same sequence of 4D again and yet more Smash Bros.

Smash Bros is sort of ok, but I don't really need to see more of it.
 
I gotta say, guest goty lists are infinitely more interesting than any of the Giantbomb staff. No slight to them, it's just a great idea. A

seriously though it was a great win since the game was pretty much forgotten otherwise.

Dan actually made a great point of why it could have lost but i thought the sheer amount of head turning and questions basically amounting to "how?" was enough to push it over.



Listened to day 2 (skipped Best Story for now) and now Brad made out like a bandit haha.

Destiny not winning most disappointing was pretty crazy but i can see the logic of why watch_dogs eventually took it.

The D4 thing is GB's fault, they should have shown a new sequence. It was lazy to do the same thing again.

Same here. I'm definitely playing The Fall now after hearing that spoiler. Spoilers never ruin my motivation to play a video game.

Also, I always have a lot of fun watching the gang play Smash Bros. I'm glad they did it one more time.

Tough category this year. Honestly, I think you could make a solid argument for any one of 6 or 7 games to legitimately win that.

I think this year has been pretty good, just not for any of the reasons most would have expected at the start of the year. It's been a year dominated by disappointment. Makes for good end of year podcasts though.

It's the novelty of it being back I'm sure, that's why I'm drinking it, once, or if, it goes away I probably won't care, I'll just go back to drinking Mtn Dew or whatever sugary beverage I can find then.

A+ advice, will read again. Last year while my parents were on a Christmas cruise, I painted my brother's old room as a sort of surprise gift to my dad, and bombcast GOTY + old radiolab episodes were my jam. Unfortunately (or not?), rooms don't need painting all that often, but cooking is also one of my favorite times to chow down on podcasts.

Now, uh, are the clips of the DCK:TF soundtrack representative of the entire game? If not, can someone post a link to their favorite track(s) from the game? Because honestly, I was with the rest of the duders on this. Most of the tracks sampled just sounded, well, not good in the clips, and for the rest, the best I could say is that they reminded me of Donkey Kong Country (and I never had any real affinity for DKC's soundtrack. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something that I would start humming to myself).
 
You know, when I heard Dan bring up Tropical Freeze for music I was on board. I never even played the game but heard it had a great soundtrack. Really liked the original games and the main dude was back for it. Then Jeff played some songs. And I completely agreed with his criticisms. Holy shit.

The Luftrausers theme is amazing and totally one of the best songs(including its permutations) I've heard all year. I never realized that the individual plane parts affected the song, I thought I had made enough progression for the music to change or something, knowing that puts it on a whole other level. Next up I'd probably put Shovel Knight.

Yeah, Playing random tracks on a 4 hour soundtrack on youtube on a phone speaker is a great way to hear a soundtrack. He had no criticism it was a bad way to view those song.
