Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

The arbitrary disqualification of Hearthstone for Best Debut was incredibly frustrating, almost enough to make me stop listening.

Welcome to Brad

Nah, you can't blame Brad for it. They all talked about the pre-release hype of W_D and agreed that it was the biggest disappointment. Jeff straight up said he played the game a while back at a preview event and it was better than the game that was released.

It really made no sense. The only questionable thing so far for me. But whatever, it's just videogames.

Is this the beginning of your next noir pulp novel?

I'm going through the podcast of Day Two and Patrick is talking about Danganropa. I had to stop because I am not sure if he spoils the game since I haven't played very much of it outside of the prologue. Does it go into spoiler territory?

Iron Bull? He's not even the best character in DA:I. I found Cassandra, Solas, and Dorian more interesting.

Looking at peoples posts here it looks like Dorian's the best DA:I character. Is that fair? I wouldn't argue with it.

It's certainly a toss-up between these 3 for me. Dorian is the most fun, Cassandra is more interesting and well-developed, Solas is more likeable.
Iron Bull just says "I like to hit things" a lot, I think he's a poor choice for best character.

Bull is A LOT more than "I like to hit things"

Dorian is the most entertaining character. "Best" is either Cassandra or Morrigan. But both are returning characters and are disqualified.

I remember years ago talking about DA:O with my brother... and I was pretty sure he mentioned how he hated the gameplay and didn't play more than a few hours. We both played DA:I at the same time, I told him how I felt like Morrigan had changed as a character... she was far less sarcastic and condescending. The moment I realized that he lied about playing DA:O was when he said "nah, she was exactly the same as she was before".

Fuck you Erik, you goddamn liar.

He spoils the ending.

I'm really happy I barely paid attention to him during that conversation. I really want to play Dragon Grandpa 1 & 2 at some point but I'm waiting on a lower price point.

Maybe he didn't do the
ritual?

In which case it's brilliant. Better game choice importing/reflection than all of the Mass Effects combined.

Seriously?
Maybe it depends on your playstyle or your choices? I'm right before the end of the game and all I've heard from him so far is "I like to hit things" or some vaguely interesting Qunari backstory. The only time that talking to him in Skyhold triggered a cutscene was when he got me drunk after we killed a dragon. That part was pretty awesome but other than that I got very little from that character.

Neither will I. I didn't expect to like Dorian as much as I did. From the outside, he looked like the typical "hide my insecurities with sarcasm" character, but he knew exactly who he was both good and bad. I never felt like I had to coddle him like many Bioware characters. Also, liked that they didn't shy away from his views on slavery. While he was an outlier Tevinter, he was still very much a product of his environment.

I think the strength of his character is heavily dependent on which choice you made in his personal quest.

I wouldnt even say hes the most entertaining. Hes probably the most likable. Even though I dont think shes a great character, I do think that Vivienne's exchanges with other characters are fun to listen to since She doesnt get along with the others. Iron Bull and Solas also provide fun commentary when youre out and about.

Overall, I do agree that Casandra was my favorite character.

Anyone got a rough time stamp of when Patrick gets into the Alien spoilers? I think I dozed off during that bit when listening earlier today

Hasphat, you and I have been talking DA:I back and forth for several days at this point. Don't take his side, he never finished DA:O because he's a horrible human being. He needs to understand this.

Man I was completely surprised by Jason's segment! It was really funny! My favorite so far!

It had more of a natural feeling to it.

I'd say Drews segment is a close second though!

Dat Destiny monologue. Jesus Christ

Is anyone keeping track of the spoilers?
So far:

Day 1 ???
Day 2 The Fall, Wolf Among Us. (? I skipped when they talked about it)

haven't heard the full podcast but as a weekly bombast listener and GB supporter I was VERY shocked to see most disappointing was NOT Destiny. WTF. Going to need to listen. Overall disappointed with the awards thus far (best music not shovel knight)? and overall videos seem lackluster to PYs. Danny couldn't have put on a better shirt than that for his role and other sloppy things (Vinnie part fairly dumb, etc). Guys are still great and casts are still there but not sure how this will wrap up. Patrick had the funniest part thus far (Plan C joke).

Nah, the interview stuff has been great. Vinny arguing with his wife as the camera pulled back to reveal he was camping in his back yard was perfect.

But yeah, Destiny is a disappointment on a scale that eclipses anything else.

Problem with the format is only a few of the crew really care. Brad chosen a five to push like a stalker, Jeff quietly ensures all his choices win and Patrick is building up support for the actual GOTY choices.

The other guys don't really fight for things and often their games are quietly dropped.

Hearthstone clearly is a new debut. Alien is clearly a video game franchise just as much as the multitude of middle earth games.

Personally I figured WD would be Assassin's Creed with cell phone a few months before it came out. Even still, the only disappointment I had with it was the graphics downgrade. Otherwise i thought the gameplay, while not groundbreaking, was fun. I actually quite enjoyed the gunplay and stealth sequences. Online invasions were fun too. Story was horseshit but whatever, it's a Ubisoft game I don't expect much.

Destiny on the other hand. That's a Bungie game. I expected SOME story, but there's nothing. The whole grimoire card mechanic as a storytelling device is mindblowingly bad. Mechanically, the game is sound but the mission design is so piss poor it's almost a joke. Funny how Brad is the "left trigger, right trigger" too. I think the main reason it stings is because I loved Halo 1, 2, 3, ODST, and Reach MP as well. Destiny's MP didn't do anything for me.

I'd say I enjoyed WD more than Destiny.

I think they should have all been disqualified. Licensed games from franchises with dozens of games aren't new. Mordor should have been eliminated. But yeah, the inconsistency and convenient application of the rules they invent gets pretty silly.

The Fall is a damned good game. I fell in love with it even before Vinny did the quick look.

Just gonna repost my Steam review, please play it guys!

This is a very intriguing adventure game. As the Ai of a suit whose human occupant is unconscious, you must explore the facility where you crash landed and try to find the medical aid needed to save your pilot.

I think the developers did an excellent job with the lighting in this game. The environment is very dark and lit only by the glow of mainframe monitors, a few service lights, some malfunctioning machinery, and the Dead Space-ish glow of your suit's helmet, and serves to enhance the tense atmosphere well. The puzzles are not too difficult, and many of the solutions were rather 'clever.' I think the voice acting is excellent, especially that of ARID, the AI of the suit whom you are controlling. I thought the plot was very interesting. Much of it explores the idea of Artificial Intelligence and the functions and programming they are bound to. I must admit, everything that happened in the end game was fascinating, though I will avoid spoilers and leave it at that. It did raise a few questions that will be addressed in the future sequels.

The only negative thing I found with this game was the controls. A core mechanic of the game involves using a flashlight mounted on your firearm to examine the environment for clues and puzzle solutions, but sometimes it was difficult/impossible to face left or right. This happened a few times, and I was locked into facing one direction and unable to turn myself around. I was able to resolve this problem by unplugging my mouse and plugging it back in. I hope the devs can address this problem soon. Otherwise, I found the controls to be fine.

Over The MoonGames did an excellent job with this game. It is part one of a planned trilogy, and I look forward to playing the next two games and learning more about the universe The Fall is set in and solving even more clever puzzles.

Jeff solo singing a duet is great, and Brad has a lovely voice.

Dan's singing is hilarious.

The bit parts in this video (day 3) were the best so far.

I think it's kind of redundant as an award myself. Ranking something as a best debut, or a best console exclusive, seems to be drawing the process back into the times when they had to rank the best game on each platform and formulate the GOTY list from that.

The GOTY award itself should be where they rank the best games as complete packages. Making sub GOTY lists with specific criteria attached (debut! console exclusive!) seems like a distraction.

I think it could be interesting to award the best game from a new franchise or IP. But if you're giving it to the 84th LOTR game, I'm not sure the category has any purpose. They might as well have nominated Call of Duty because it has a new subtitle this year.

It was good LOTR game with a good gameplay system that surprised almost everyone.

I get you about the IP or franchise, but I will say that is not only the 84th LOTR for many of us (if that was the case, is a pretty bad LOTR game, theme wise)

But lets be real, this is about the cast discussing the year in games, not necessarily about having an objective evaluation of their merits

Yeah that's sort of how I'm viewing this. There are too many games that not all of them played to make it a fair, across the board discussion about the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best games in every category they discuss. I'm just enjoying their discussions and honestly don't care about what game places where.

as for the debut discussions, I think Mordor and Alien fit because they were not attached to any previous video game lineage. They are very much new games even though they carry old licenses. I mean if this discussion were taking place the year Batman AA came out, would anyone be dismissing it because there were Batman games on the NES and Playstation 2? That being said, Hearthstone probably should have counted too.
