Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

These voted re-quick look games have been awful. I blame each and every single one of you.

We could've had a full crew simulator quick looks but noooooooooooo.

A lot of people are of this mentality, I suppose:

GotY candidates? Past GotY candidates? Anything else?

Voting for SingStar is the kind of shit you see on a Twitch stream like Sodapoppin.

"Serious choices" are not really why I come to GB video content.

There's a treasure trove of Dan quotes here: http://danryckertjustsaid.tumblr.com/

Best Dan Ryckert Story should totally be a category. For me, it would be a toss up between the "Faking bad eyesight so I could get eyeglasses and actually developing bad eyesight as a result" and the "I cooked hot dogs in a shoe box and also used egg shells when cooking because I thought that's what egg whites were."

I wanna run something by people re: Destiny, because I feel like Jeff is out of his goddamn mind / coming from a weird place regarding that game's expectations.

As a non-Bungie superfan, the only times I saw Destiny was basically at big keynotes at E3 and such. I didn't watch/see many trailers, I don't follow vidocs, I'm talking like, big mainstream Destiny coverage. All I saw of it was the stage presentations, and it looked nice, but at no point did I get the sense that Bungie were promising THE BEST GAME EVERRRR or whatever Jeff says they were doing. So when Destiny came out, for me, it was kind of a nice surprise: Not the best game ever, but it did some really neat, innovate cross-genre stuff, it looks amazing and the gunplay is terrific. Sure, it's light on content, but even so you can easily play it for 100 hours if you're into loot games before you exhaust all the content, which isn't bad for such a novel thing, and a lot more than I get out of most games.

If it's not for you, it's not for you, but I never got the sense that Destiny was buzzed to be The Best Thing Ever. And really, if you're letting your expectations get set by the PR Hype Machine to that extent, I feel like you're a sucker, and you should know better, especially if you're Jeff Gerstmann, with all his industry experience. And ESPECIALLY with how cagey Bungie was being with showing gameplay before launch, that should've been a sign for someone like Jeff not to expect the best. I feel like he's not calling Destiny most disappointing game of the year, but he's calling Bungie's marketing Most Overzealous Marketing of the year, you know?

Thoughts?

I'm not a bungie fan either but that game was hyped to the moon. It was supposed to be this big space fps mmo. The way they talked about finding rare guns that others would have no idea about, made it feel really open. Like you could just stumble into a dungeon on Mercury and find something cool. Maybe not Fallout or Skyrim big, especially with it being divided amongst various planets, but still they made it sound very open. That's why everyone freaked out about the game's size after the alpha, people thought we must had been given a small section of Earth, that there would be multiple cities or contries. In actuality they gave us 1/4 of the entire game. When we didn't know the planet count people here were assuming at least around 10 locations of the Earth map's size we ended up with 4. Destiny plays great, but it is so painfully obvious that it is lacking content, missing a story (the game has like 4 cutscenes), and in general feels halfbaked.

Hmm, this year recap video doesn't seem to be as good as previous ones. On the other hand, I really like the user voted games, and the podcasts.

Brad's skit was pretty funny but I thought Jeff's was disappointingly weak, probably the worst of the bunch

Same, dude is funny as hell but this did very little for me. He's generally funnier when he has something or someone to riff off of I think.

Brad's black hole though, glorious

Accurately depicting a Jeff in a world with no games was too much of a struggle. Early attempts horrified test audiences.

(I agree, the fake game ideas went on way too long for barely any payoff. It was like they forgot to film one for Jeff until the afternoon of the last day of filming)

It certainly seemed like he was freewheeling it during the whiteboard section (which was the best part of his bit, honestly).
