Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

the hyperbole is kinda grating on these podcasts. I understand that they have to convince each other but it just becomes repetitive and kind of absurd. patrick and alex are quite bad with it. not everything is the best or worst ever

as someone who hasn't played unity, I still don't understand why its awful. it by all means could be, but that exchange was just a lot of shouting about chests and not much else. what about the design made it poor compared to the last one? I still don't know

when jeff goes on a tirade about destiny it actually hits home because he's considered with his opinions, knows the genre and isn't prone to over exaggerating. that makes it worth listening to.

My favorite parts of the podcast so far have been Jason boosting Guilty Gear Xrd from out of nowhere and Jeff going all in on Destiny. Jason has shown himself to be an awesome duder I'm finally coming around to wanting to see him more. And Jeff's rant is going to be legendary.

My least favorite part was the Best Style category. That entire bit felt like a joke that sounded good one day, but fell flat the next. It seemed like they weren't having fun with it by the end. Oh well. At least Jazzpunk got its due.

Haha wow Jeff's arguments against Smash

"Oh man yeah check out this cool chaotic mess and i guess you could get good at it but... why"

a criticism so general you could apply it to pretty much any game ever. Oh, caustic jeff.

I had a bit of a fist pump moment when Jeff said that hardly anyone in the room liked Smash, then Dan went around the table and its actually just Jeff and Brad.

Yeah, I kinda zoned out during that discussion. The category was a little too vague so it was a hard case to argue.

And Jeff was totally talking about how people that play smash seriously are weirdos and its meant to be played chaotic.

Yeah, honestly, Jeff's Nintendo bullshit gets kinda old.

I totally related with him, though. Something about Smash just doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, and I think the chaotic aspect is part of that. It just feels so incredibly random and pointless. I'm a big Nintendo fan, but I'm totally with Brad and Jeff when it comes to the Smash franchise. Not entertaining in the slightest.

Honestly, I wish I could enjoy it, but it's just not for me.

If the game was actually chaotic you couldn't do stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wH55tLRYqk

You just need to respect the game and learn how to actually play it.

I know what he means in that he doesn't enjoy it, but he should've just left it at that. Why would you ever say something like "What's the point" for a fighting game? What's the point of Smash? What's the point of any game ever? Brad was more on point - he just finds it boring (
jibe about dota 2 goes here
).

Of course it just might've been a facetious argument that Jeff enters into once in a while. He's gotten really good at those and I can't tell when he's serious anymore.

I was really glad he got called out about that because his favorite game of the year was Call of Duty. That fact wasn't mentioned, but jesus christ pot kettle etc.

The podcast is less "This is why _____ is the ____ game of the year" and more "This is the shit we go through to put out these lists"

I've usually just passed by on those kinds of comments from Jeff by going "Well... it's Jeff" but hearing that was the first time in a while where I went "Come on man... Really?" It was enough for me to even have the desire to just skip ahead a bit.

I actually ended up getting AC Unity for free with my XBOne as part of that AC Unity bundle. I was legitmately curious how the console versions were like since all I've seen was really bad PC footage of the game shitting itself. I think in my 4-5 hours playing I've seen some weird glitches. Like the scripting breaking
When you jump off the Bastille. I actually got nudged by Sir Pisspot and lost the QTE event thing and was stuck.
, incredible amounts of pop in, and NPC's just CHANGING in front of me. None of that to me seemed exaggerated. Outside of that it's some AC-ass AC but the story is worse than usual.

Jeff going off on Destiny just sounded like a parent disappointed in their child almost to the point of disowning them.

Also the debates decending into hyperbole isn't really new. Sometimes it'll get annoying when they just run out of things to specifically argue about. Go listen to some of the previous ones if you're curious

This happens every year. After hours of debating a game's major positives and negatives and regurgitating the same arguments over and over, the hyperbole and nit-picking kicks in because there's nothing substantial left to argue about. A classic example of this was the final debate over Skyrim vs Saints Row 3 for their Game of the Year back in 2011. After hours of debate, Jeff (who was dead set on SR3 taking it) said he didn't like Skyrim because "You fight a lot of ice guys." I mean, that's really scraping the bottom of the barrel for flaws.

The debates stop becoming interesting and cross over into annoying territory when they go on for too long and that kind of arguing starts to come up. But I have a feeling the GOTY debate may not be as heated this year since they all seem to love Bayo2. Even Stonewall Shoemaker may not put up that much of a fight for Mordor when pitted against Bayo2. We'll see.

I just bought the Jackbox because of this podcast!
I picked it up for Thanksgiving and it was a big hit. So good.

Edit:
Destiny deserves top ten.

Brad and Drew will pull it out. Jeff will admit to the good parts as he usually does.

Happening!
I'm definitely on #teamtharp here. Destiny is going on the list and I think it deserves it for the things it actually does well.

And that's 2014....

i missed the fall. i kinda wanted it (also to get more deluxe promotion points) but opted for the swapper instead. man i should have gotten it. now i am away from my wiiu for the next two weeks and no way to get maybe the last few deluxe promotion points.

They probably enjoy Nidhogg for the same reason they enjoyed divekick, simple fighting game. Smash I'd say is probably one step up from those two in terms of controls. It's a shame that they could probably get that same type of enjoyment that they do from a Nidhogg or a Divekick out of smash if they dug in a bit, instead of facerolling on the controller. Not to say there's anything wrong with facerolling on the controller, but you can get both types of enjoyment out of smash.

I would have picked jackbox pack anyways

okay i listened to the podcast and i gotta say the discussion regarding the best multiplayer is quite depressing. there are two people that simply dislike the series and therefore probably played very little of the new entry and therefore try to push other games. the guys supporting smash just give up because they know that the two will just not accept smash winning it. jackbox gets it despite all of them agreeing a few minutes ago that it had a higher percentage of bad minigames in comparison to another party game compilation.

the whole segment just seems like agreeing on the lowest denominator.
Goddamn it! I really need a Wii U in my life too.

I need that 'joy of games' feeling back in my life. Are there any good RPGs on Wii U besides Windwaker?

right now id recommend monster hunter ultimate

also wiiu gets xenoblade x next year. after that hopefully fire emblem x smt

also you could get some good wii RPGs like fire emblem radiant dawn, xenoblade, last story and chocobo dungeon

I'm totally with Jeff on this one. There's nothing interesting about Lovely Planet and RDR was a bad game.

Can someone explain to me how jackbox works? Can I put it on my laptop and then play with random people at a party without them buying anything and using their phones? I got that impression from the cast but I'm not exactly sure how it works.

I assume they all connect to the game via the internet once the join the game room.

On your phone you need to go to the website an input the room code.

A game of smash bros last for god damned ever and nothing at all happens if you have no idea what you're doing. It's really hard to make nothing happen in Gang Beasts, Nidhogg, or Divekick.

you launch it on whatever system you buy it on, it connects to their servers and starts a game and generates a room code, anyone can join the game from any smartphone or pc by going to the website specified and entering the game code, then they're in.

I don't know, I've probably watched at least four or five hours of gang beasts and I still have no idea how to play the damn thing

surprised gangbeast wasn't a contender for local mp.

They played that a fuck load this year, and each time's been great.

Sure, but when you're actually playing the game yourself even moving around is hilarious. For most smash bros fans it's been a long time, but try to think back to when you had literally no idea how to do anything in Smash Bros. If you don't devote time to the game (and you have no interest in the "Look at all the Nintendo characters!" aspect of it to carry you through those early hours) then every match is tedious with just random flailing and a lot of avoiding everything.

Think of how boring it is to watch Giant Bomb play Smash Bros, then imagine you're the one holding the controller. That's why there is such strong dislike for the game.

there are a lot of assumptions here

edit: less after you edited that last sentence, but still quite a few

I actually agree with their choice for local multiplayer, but it's the slight twinge of bitterness in Jeff's voice whenever he has to begrudgingly talk about a Nintendo game that really makes me laugh every time.

Sure, I do assume most Smash Bros fans have been fans of the series for a long time but that's mostly because I find it almost impossible to believe that somebody would jump into modern day Nintendo and say "YEAH! This is who I'm on board with!" (edit: Also, before the new release, the last game in the series was widely considered the worst, so it's hard to imagine Smash Bros fans who haven't been on board since at least Gamecube) I don't think it's at all a coincidence that Brad and Jeff, who have the least affection for the N64, care least about Smash Bros.

But for pick up and play, a bunch of people in a room who have no idea how to play either game, I'm comfortable saying that more people will have fun sooner with Gang Beasts than Smash Bros. I'm not saying it's more rewarding long term, but it's absolutely a more immediate reward.

I did. I watched a friend of mine who had no idea how to play Smash Bros play Smash 4. He picked Charizard and just Side B the entire time. The thing is, that was fun for him and it's not like it took any less enjoyment from the rest of us when we were playing FFAs.

I still don't get why so many people can't seem to fathom why other people might have differing opinions. Its so strange.

Well, I'm going to sleep right now, but I can't wait to see the reactions to everything tomorrow once I'm done with work~ Should be exciting. I wonder who'll win...

I think the contention comes from hearing the arguments being made in the podcasts and how flimsy, contradictory or just plain bad they are. Like Jeff complaining about how chaotic smash is the only time its good and then criticizing it for being chaotic.
