Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I don't want an anime avatar, so hopefully not! :)

Tharp has a 141 2/3% chance of winning the bet

I just played through Jazzpunk and The Fall, based on these discussions (and others throughout the year on this podcast and other podcasts).

I don't really have anything interesting to say about Jazzpunk -- it was neat but slight, it didn't say much.

The Fall was super interesting. I don't think the story was, you know, award worthy (it was barely there) but watching the game find itself, mechanically, over two and a half hours was exciting.

Regardless of the "...but indies!" defense when talking about whether this was a bad year for games or not, I think it was a bad year for video games stories. One of the worst I can remember. I can't think a single story outside of maybe The Talos Principle that I would call very memorable.

Jazzpunk is one of my GOTYs, but it's very divisive.

Shit, while I'm waiting for final day, gonna jump into last year's GOTY discussions. I think I skipped some segments for games I didn't play last year. Should be fun.

Dave is definitely the hardest to draw; something very difficult to capture about his look. To my surprise both Alexis and Jason were a lot easier to capture than I anticipated, possibly because Jason it turns out just looks like a more built Tintin. Rory was a mite difficult but if you just put a dog on his shoulder everything works out.

Jazzpunk has a fantastic visual style and great use of sound which is then let down by it being 2/3 hours of "jokes" consisting of references and totally wacky stuff going on. There's some cute moments but I found them few and far between.

And on the other hand this year had some of the best games in their genres in regards to gameplay mechanics. 2014 was a dull year if you were constrained to few platforms or genres but otherwise had some amazing titles.

Story-wise, I think Lifeless Planet, Broken Age, Dreamfall Chapters, and Wolfenstein killed it (haven't finished The Fall).

In case anyone hasn't heard of Lifeless Planet, it's basically a mix of Solaris and 2001. Says more with surreal environments.

Today is the last day, correct? What time have these been going up on ITunes?

Can't wait to see Destiny take its rightful place at the top.

Just put Dave in a wife-beater.

Everyone will know who it is instantly.

Dota 2 ain't the same game it was last year... or at least I haven't seen anyone say otherwise. Seems fair.

Brad's ability to resist not giving Destiny the sorta-top-spot as a fuck you to Bungie is amazing, though. I feel like even if I liked that game, I'd keep it well away just as a show of mutual disrespect.

That's just an aspect of the genre though. Next year Dota, League, Smite and the like will have more big game changes, as will games like WoW. Does that mean that every year these games will be considered a 'new' game? Dota 2 has changed a lot this year, but it's still very much Dota. I switch around between the big 3 mobas and none change drastically enough to where I would say they are a new game -- the closest that it gets is League revamping it's art style and changing to an entirely new map recently, but it's still League of Legends. I don't really have an issue with Dota 2 being Brad's #1, I just feel it's a bit against the spirit of the list and should be about judging and rating the games of that year. I would prefer he put a note in the intro saying that Dota 2 is his implied #1 always and then have the top 10 separate, otherwise going forward it will just be Brad's top 9 games of the year and Dota 2.

Is it really gonna be a four-hour podcast? I mean really, wtf.

btw does anyone else wish we got video podcasts? Why don't we have those anyway?

the question should be about the proportion of GOTY deliberations in the 4 awards of today

After the discussions and most of the individual lists, I have lost hope Bayonetta 2 takes its "rightfull" spot. Sounds like Vinny, Alex and Jason still love it though, so it will probably be high on their lists.

Top 3 probably going to be:

1. Shadow of Mordor
2. Bayonetta 2
3. Far Cry 4

This sounds right

So a game they voted as one of the 3 most disappointing games is going to win GOTY?

No I don't think it is going to win, although the only reason it was on that most disappointing list was Jeff. I do hope it makes the top 10 - I'm guessing it will with support from Brad and Drew. I am hoping they do the thing where they go around the room challenging games to take off the list - can just imagine Jeff saying "I'm taking Destiny off" and Brad going nuts, rightfully.

Other than that, I don't really see many fireworks, and they'll settle on Mordor or Far Cry with an outside shot at Bayonetta.

I'm not sure how the story of The Fall is barely there. Its the major thrust of the game.

That's how I feel about Destiny. It makes me rage because it's misses the point in so many ways, and it's miles away from what it could have been, but the shell of a game we got instead is still one of the most important piece of gaming I played this year, and it's definitely in my top 10, if not in my top 3.

Most disappointing doesn't mean worst game.

Dragonfall, Consortium, South Park, Wasteland 2, Gods Will Be Watching, Kentucky route Zero, The Wolf Among Us, The Uncle Who Works At Nintendo, The Fall, Trails In the Sky, 80 Days, Valiant Hearts.

There was a lot of stuff worth playing.

Agreed, and it tells more about Brad than anything.

Eh, he has said time and time again that he doesn't like how it plays, or much of anything about the game (which is why he hasn't really touched Smash since Melee) . Don't think you need much more than that. Him and Jeff just aren't big fans of the classic Nintendo franchises anymore, give or take a few games.
