Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

This is exactly right. Without Patrick it's a much, much smaller site. Not so much in content, but in the types of games they play, the communities with which they engage, and how they discuss video games. He'll be very, very hard to replace even without mentioning his occasional reporting.

He booked a lot of interesting people on the E3 after show. That includes industry folk, indie devs, game writers. Shame GB might loose access to those sorts of people/games.

That's too bad, he always seemed to me like the one who actually knew about games in the office, made the others seem like half-drunk vagabonds. But in reality he left Giantbomb when he moved to Chicago.

They really need to hire someone young. Like, early 20s young.

They're all getting older and moving on with their lives. Patrick will probably be starting a family soon, Jeff seems to be getting serious with his girlfriend, Vinny and his family, and so on.

Not to be creepy, but they need that young, passionate gamer who has time to play a lot of games and isn't set in their ways.

Man, I'm a huge fan of the guy and his constant constructive optimism in the face of the stream of useless asshats who would shitpost about him online was always something to be commended.

Will miss his input and voice on Giant Bomb.

You know, I kinda felt this was coming for a bit now.

Rome is falling....who's next? I can see Jeff making an exit..I get the feeling he's sick of games media.

Aw, shit. Man, I was so stoked when he first started, I can't believe this. I guess that's the end of anything resembling discussion of social issues on GB. What a goddamn shame. Well, maybe Alex will pick up on that front, but damn, this is a huge bummer.

...I'm Okay With This.jpg

A lot of the time, the rest of the staff didn't want to comment on things like Gamergate/etc. to avoid the controversy etc. Patrick was the only one willing to drag them into those fires. If this means less boat rocking, fine with me.

There's still Rock, Paper, Shotgun (if they even do this anymore?) for "Social Justice" issues.

I didn't always agree with him but he was a good counterweight to Jeff.

Agreed.

I liked the perspective he brought to some articles, but in general I didn't really care much for his content - when he was on the bombcast I found he often came across patronizing. His attitude is a bit offputting, I guess. Smarmy.

Still, that perspective was something that Giant Bomb needed. It will be interesting to see who they bring in now.

Was this his longest stint at an outlet? He always seemed like someone who couldn't stay in one place for a long time

That said, with GB NY becoming an actual thing (hiring a new person, a real office, ect), he seemed really like an outlier. Hope we get a real podcast with Vinny Alex and others now, to fill the missing podcast home

I doubt GB will lose access to those kind of people, but yeah, Patrick was the "indie guy" more than anyone else there.

People were upset GB hired another white guy. Patrick favorited a bunch of their tweets. I guess people saw that as an endorsement.

Oh yeah, I remember that. I kinda agreed with Patrick.I like Dan. He has been a huge uplift for the SF Bombcrew but he didn't bring anything new to the table that they weren't already comfortable with.

Diversity for diversities sake? That's always cool. Come on, now that Dan's been at the site for a while is there honestly anyone who could have possibly fit in better with the GB culture? It's like a perfect fit.

I think Patrick and those who think like him were thinking of superficial diversity more than anything else. I totally agree though, Dan's been the perfect addition to the site. He's enthusiastic about starting new video series and he's always a great source of WTF in anything he's in.

And I don't think anyone else could have convinced Jeff to get on that roller coaster and film that stupid video, that was amazing!

I see that nobody is still explaining this supposed beef between Dan and Patrick lol.

Also the job listing says they would like to have someone speak Japanese if possible (and is in New York). What if Giant Bomb East isn't about the location of the studio but a focus on coverage from the east!? I'm blowing my on mind right now.

Sad to see him go, but the feeling that he had drifted away long ago was quite apparent. Best of luck Mr. kleppek. Despite not following his stuff religiously, ill miss the investigative aspect he brought.

On the bright side, a new East member will be great.

I'm guessing Vinny and Alex will do some kind of podcast to replace Scoops and the Wolf.

That would sure ease the pain of Patrick's (supposed?) departure.

If this is true, it's a damn shame. Really liked Patrick's contributions to the site and will be sad to see him go. I don't know if I'd be interested in seeing him do solo stuff divorced from the context of Giant Bomb, but I'll give it a try if that's what he's pursuing.

Look forward to what he does next. One of the few actual game reporters. That like actually investigates and reports things and not just copy and paste Press releases

I hope he continues this sort of work; I felt like his sensibilities and priorities never really fit with GB, even as a video personality and I think I may even enjoy his work more if he is able to do it in a different environment, one that is maybe a little more suitable?

That said, pretty surprising.

Hope Patrick stays in the industry as I'm a fan of his work.

Wonder where Giant Bomb goes from here.

Presumably the new hire will operate out of NY, for numbers sake.

The ONLY thing I remember is that Patrick was disappointed they hired white males again. He wanted more diversity. A female maybe.

I could be wrong about this, it's been a while.

Yah, I forget if he wrote a blog post about it but he retweeted a couple people who..creatively aired their disappointment at the new hires. I believe one of those tweets vehemently accusing GB of being a white boys club or something of that sort. I think he was vocally disappointed as well . on phone so I cant google for this stuff appropriately.

Agreed!

"Vin Dog and Wolf"

WHAT THE FUCK!?! Oh man... well this ruined my new years. I just bought a premium membership for him and drew's commentary.

If it makes you feel better who ever replaces him is going to be an interesting addition. The job listing has Japanese language skills as a requirement. Also has podcast experience being required which suggests that there is going to be a GBeast podcast soon.

Oo, is this true? I hope now that there are 3 of them, that they start a GB East podcast.

Yep the editor position is based in NY office. Read over the listing it has a few strange requirements.

weird. hope he's doing a similar thing on another site so i can follow him there, unless he feels like he needs a big change in his life in which case more power to him.

Why would Bill know about this for weeks in advance? Is Patrick going to work for Nintendo or something?

Best of luck, Patrick brought some more diverse taste to the crew.

Hopefully their new hire has similar focus on some games the others don't get to. The job listing is interesting with the Japanese stuff.

Dan is way too laid back to have beef with anyone. There's no animosity between Patrick and Dan.

Sad to see Patrick go, I enjoyed his videos and found him to be well spoken. I hope he does well in his next job!
