Wow. I hope you stretched before you made that leap.

To be fair, Patrick was pretty incensed about that ending during the GOTY podcasts.

He was. Ever since Ground Zeroes Patrick has had a problem with Kojima. He even used very careful wording when speaking well of P.T., way back then. I'm not sure, however, that the mere fact of whether you liked ground zeroes makes you pro or con rape.

I think it's valid to call out and criticize the tropes in GZ in regards to Paz (it's worth noting that these aren't overused tropes in videogames, not in relation to other media), especially if you don't think the trope was handled well.

Kojima absolutely was with the Paz subplot, and Dan lapped it up. Nobody else on staff liked it. Go back and listen. Everybody, including Jeff, shot it down as gross, bad storytelling, and callous. Dan said it was important and necessary to explain Big Boss turning into a villain. It absolutely is not.

Patrick sums it up well here.
Dan disagreeing with Patrick = bad person who trivializes real life rape? Still confused.

My only real takeaway from this thread is that I really miss Ryan. What an awesome guy he was.

This, so much. It still makes me sad that Ryan is not with us anymore.

I always enjoy Patrick's work so I wish him success in his future endeavors and will check out whatever he ends up working on. The industry needs more people like him that create content with context as apposed to the usual press release dump (the fine folks at USGamer are doing a good job of this as well). I really appreciate his willingness to get out of his comfort zone and try game genres he is not as familiar with too.

Loved Patrick's work over the years, but never really thought he was a great fit at GB(seemed like a site that had no need for "news"). Good luck to him in his professional journey.

News may be a smaller aspect of the site, but important all the same. But the real unique things he brought to the table at GB were a result of his specific interests in the gaming industry, which was different from most of the crew. Patrick made regular entertaining content where I felt I was actually learning interesting things and being exposed to new interesting people in games opposed to just consuming humorous videos.

Dump truck interviews, stories, video articles, news-focused podcasts, weekly digests of fascinating articles, long running "endurance runs" that that focused on commenting on game mechanics in-depth (Spelunky, Isaac) -- Patrick brought a ton of new things to the site that I thought were amazing additions, and I will be sorely missing his weekly contributions to GB. His Bombing in the AM series alone made Mondays something I actually looked forward to.

Dan said that part was gross; I haven't played GZ, or even seen all the cutscenes, but as I understand there's something else in that somehow represents BB's turn to the 'dark side', which Dan, as a massive MGS fan, really cared for.

Patrick sums it up well here.

Patrick says it's distasteful and unearned. There's nothing about real rape victims. Paz is not a real rape victim, because, although a rape victim, she's not real.

I was skeptical of him at first but Dan is probably my second or third favorite Bomber now. Dude is hilarious and I keep wondering how many insane stories he's got left in him. Eggshells are egg whites? Faking bad eyesight and getting it for real? What's a mortgage? C'mon son.

These stories are way more sad than they are hilarious.

Why? He's happy and confident enough to share the silly dumb mistakes he's made in his life because he's knows they'll make people laugh. Everyone has done dumb stuff. It's much more sad how judgmental and condescending people are towards him and others in this thread. This thread has gotten insane, it has nothing to do with Patrick anymore. It's a shame that what should be a celebration of all the good work he did at GB has turned into this.

Any thread on Gaf after a day turns to shit.

This. It's like 24 hour news channels; people end up talking for hours on end about something that has no developing nature and you end up going in circles arguing over semantics and reading far too deep into other people's intent.

I feel like a lot of people get angry at Dan cause he isn't as worried about life as they are yet it still works for him.
He's just a guy having the time of his life and apparently people can't stand a guy who just wants to be happy instead of cynical, worried and down all the time.

I think it's odd willful ignorance on some issues that bothers people, like how pot will kill you but somehow drinking until you pass out and wake up in your own vomit is healthy.

But I've just learned to accept that Dan is Dan.

Totally agree.

I think there's a sense of jealousy from a lot of the crowd. This guy is new. He's not 'earned' his spot. He was relatively unknown and there are certain sectors that aren't cool with this guy having a job they wished they had and seemingly being severely blasé about aspects of life they think he should have down.

I also think there's a very negative aspect of schadenfreude happening. People are listening to Dan telling funny stories he knows will get a laugh.

When he blurts out "WHATS A MORTGAGE?!?!?" he's doing it for effect, attention and giggles. The guy is almost 30 - I'm sure he has an idea of what a mortgage is or could spend 15 seconds googling it.

The fact that people in the GB threads get so worked up about him is astonishing.

Stop being upset by someone having a good time.

Mortage talk was interesting. And its true that if you're just renting, why the heck would you care about what mortages are.

Well, I remember in the GB thread there was a little angst over how he said he wouldn't vote. I think it was because he said he didn't want to get informed about the issues so he's just going to let other people figure it out for him and live with whatever government he gets or something. lol

Because he's a grown man, not a 12 year old.

If I wanted to listen to a podcast about teenagers learning how the world really works I'm sure there's one out here and I'm sure it's funny.

I'm an adult in my 30s and liked that GB felt like listening to my friends hang out. If they're trying to attract a younger pewdiepie type audience I suppose hiring Dan was a good idea but they're losing people like me in the process.

Ahaha.

As someone with a job, a mortgage, a kid, a wife and all the other grown up things one is supposed to posses I have no issues with someone on a fucking videogame podcast acting bombastic and having a different lifestyle to me.

You should grow up, my man. Go get some perspective and meet some new people. That last paragraph of yours sounds fucking gross.

You want something that Giant Bomb doesn't provide to begin with, so.... yeah.

I don't know how you can doubt Dan after the rollercoaster incident.

So instead of saying "Dan's style of humor isn't one I find funny" you attack him as a person and act condescending towards him? There are plenty of people in the GB thread who enjoy Dan's style of humor and are also not teenagers, but again you just label us as "a younger pewdiepie type audience"

There's a difference between having an outgoing carefree personality and being dumber than a sack of rocks.

And what's gross about them wanting to attract a younger more immature and ignorant crowd? I'm sure there's a lot of money there.

Edited to tone down admittedly insensitive comment.

So what would you call him saying that using rape so flippantly was enjoyable and good storytelling. I'd call that acceptance of using rape as an unearned plot device. It only further hurts those actually suffering, and for what? Cheap shock value? I'm not saying he acknowledges he's doing it, but I absolutely believe he inadvertently is.

You could actually read what Kojima had to say about pushing boundaries.

"In Breaking Bad, I also see that these guys are trying to go to the limit; trying to take it as far as they can to try to get their message across. For us as well. In games we have to go to the limit; we want to stay within this limit of how far...pushing the boundaries of conveying our message. We look around and we don't see too many games like this; that is unfortunate,"

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/games-will-never-be-considered-culture-if-they-don-t-broach-sensitive-subjects-kojima-says/1100-6418120/

It wasn't for shock value as a cheap narrative device, it was about pushing boundaries.

It's not that I don't find him funny it's that I genuinely think he's an imbecile. And worse I think he's the type of person that's actually proud of his willful ignorance.

Patrick Klepek is a good dude and was great at Giant Bomb. The amount of shit he took from internet trolls was unbelievable and I thought he handled all that pretty well. I didn't always agree with what he said but he articulated his opinions well and I respected what he had to say. Having him on these last podcasts made me realize how much I missed listening to him every week.

Best of luck to scoops and I will definitely follow him to his next stop.

Holy fuck some of you people are nuts. This thread needs to be locked. I'm completely baffled and disgusted over the last few pages of this thread. I sincerely hope no one from Giant Bomb ever comes back to, or reads this thread ever again.

This thread is fucking madness. I hate the internet sometimes.

You hate the internet or do you hate humanity? Because like all systems people are the ones who fuck it up.

And as how how this thread went, when people run out of things to talk about they make other things up. It's how humans work.

ItsTheNew

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
Dan's great, and it's obvious he didn't come from a rich family, he made it and is doing what makes him happy, and his attitude on life is refreshing instead of wringing his hands or developing a victim complex. Patrick is fine in small quantities but he's the antithesis of Dan and I can't really relate to him.

Welcome to every Giant Bomb thread. Patrick has often got the worst of it.

Yeah, this is more or less correct. Jumping into a GB thread tends to mean a sudden burst of cynicism/negativity, and this often extends to the OT, as well. It sucks, because I generally go to those threads to discuss something that made me happy. :p

I would say the last few pages of this thread have been particularly unfortunate, though.

Damn Dan's still rustling people jimmies in here LOL

Also based on the "one more thing article" it seems Patrick has already been hired by someone since Jeff give thanks to Patrick's employer. Or maybe that's just in a general/future sense

Wow. Dan is not dumber than a sack of rocks.

For example, he has a fantastic job where he gets to have fun all the time. Meanwhile, you're angrily posting insulting comments on a message board about a person you've never met. And even though I've never met you OR Dan, it's not a stretch to assume that Dan is a far better person than you are.... wouldn't be surprised if he's smarter, as well.
