Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

So /v/ was right.
Honestly it didn't make a ton of sense for GB to keep one dude doing news/opinion stuff on the side while the rest of the site was entirely focused on video and podcast. Unless they planned to eventually turn the site into a huge IGN/Gamespot with more comprehensive coverage of the industry his stuff felt off topic.
I also can't say I ever really enjoyed his writing, it alwasy felt very broad and reactionnary, but I hope he'll find his place somewhere else and be happy there.

Not exactly since their recent job listing mentions news as one of the things the person would do (they even asked for Japanese as a optional language).

Some thought why since Patrick was already doing news stuff but...

Truly a bummer. I thought with the expansion to the midwest/east coast GB was going to really turn themselves into more of an all-encompassing site.

Don't get me wrong, I know their bread and butter are quick looks and podcasts, but still.

I also don't like what he said about working with Brad in the future again. Not to sound all doomsday-ish but, yeah, I don't want to type it out, you know what I'm getting at.
Yeah, I noticed that too. It's really sad to think that founding members might be leaving.

It's pretty obvious what he meant. Patrick is going to become a professional DOTA commentator and obviously Brad will want join him at some point.

Patrick was the only one who would really try weird Japanese stuff like Danganronpa. His presence will really be missed in that regard when GOTY stuff comes around.

I never paid much heed to GB because of their lack of Japanese content, so with the one guy who actually would bother with it leaving, so now I am not even gonna bother anymore.

I hope this is Patrick having found something better for him... whatever it is.

If this is just GB not having enough money to keep the crew together or Patrick's location making things difficult, then I'm a little pissed. They should have told the community, maybe they could have raised the missing money.
I would right now buy a second premium membership, if it meant Patrick could stay. I really hope it wasn't that.

They play the Japanese games that matter though.

There is a senior news editor position posted a short while ago for GB which foreshadowed all of this.

Oh wow. That's awesome. Giant BEastCast here we come!!!!

Plus, you have to assume that some other CBSi property uses those CBS offices. There's got to be at least one other gaming person in that office. Are there any Gamespot people in New York, let alone in that specific CBS office?

Best of lucks Patrick! Hope you keep as videogames journalist, would suck losing more interesting voices in the field.

I was always harsh on Patrick because I always expected more of him because I really liked him. His output this year was bad and almost nonexistent, and his video stuff was so cheap and ugly that I felt that it drug down the site into generic YouTube level quality; it really bothered me that he never fixed his setup, and that he never did more solo Quick Looks that showcased the game and not himself (which I always though he didn't do with Spookin' and the other videos that had his face plastered in the corner. This is a pet peeve of mine that I know is in the minority since so many people love this garbage from various YouTube personalities).

But, I will miss him. I really wish he got the chance to do actual reporting for the site and not rewriting press releases or other outlets' news. The quality of the pieces were hit and misses, but I really liked his earlier output where he interviewed developers and had longer editorials on games or whatever. His perspective was unique for the site, but always felt on the verge of being snuffed out.

I guess I would feel more sorrowful for this news if it had happened a year earlier. I think the last 15 months of GB has been the worst, and I rarely finish a podcast episode now without skipping large chunks; I don't like Brad's hosting, I can't stand Dan at all, the ads are too long, I think Jeff has never been more dismissive and obnoxious, and Vinny left. It started when Dave departed and snowballed from there for reasons within and outside of their control, but the site means nothing to me anymore. I watch maybe 20% of the Quick Looks, none of the Dan stuff, and the constant fluctuations in the quantity of output, where some weeks have a ton and other weeks almost nothing, has been frustrating for years. The only reason I watch as much as I do is because my premium membership renewed during a really rough time of my life and I didn't have the time or mental awareness to cancel it before it happened so now I feel compelled to watch some of the content since I paid for it.

I wish Patrick the best and I hope he grows and advances in ways that I hoped he would at GB.

No GS people in NYC I think. That office is mostly CES, and they have some gaming people.

Klepek leaves GB? I'm ok with that. Seemed to me like the guy had no chemistry with rest of the team, and for me personally his content/writing was neither appealing nor compelling. The Bombcast allready got alot better when he left for Chicago. Wish him all the best though, imho he'd fit perfectly into a news outlet like Kotaku or Polygon. The only real bummer here is Vinny still being stuck in New York with Alex Navarro : (

:(

Really bummed to hear this, really enjoyed all of Scoop's content and commentary. Always hated the constant shit he would get; I don't think I could have handled all of that half as well as he does.

Wherever he goes will be lucky to have him. Best of luck!

Also want to throw in my two cents and say this is disappointing. I always appreciated his perspectives even though I did not like him much in the beginning. I feel like giant bomb is becoming something different that what I used to throughly enjoy. Not a slieght against Drew Scanlon but I do not find him to be entertaining to watch or listen to :/

Whoa. I joked about this in the community thread a few days ago, but never thought it would really happen. Kinda sad he's leaving.

Best of luck to Scoops with whatever he's going to be doing. Thanks for everything you've done for Giant Bomb!

Well if that person is in one of the offices and can do both editorial stuff and QLs it would make more sense. I hope they find someone who's able to do both,

Kind of feel like Patrick just never really fit in there. Don't get me wrong he's a good guy, but I think that he wants to do more "news" type stuff and that's really not what GB is about these days. Still, all the best Scoops.

That's something that drove me off GiantBomb like a year or two after it launched. After a while the "news" posts were "hey so this game is coming out soon/opinion or whatever" and then a bunch of QuickLooks and other videos which is all fine and dandy but not really what I was looking for.

Then Patrick shows up and does some news posts but also "Social Justice" issues a lot of the time which also isn't what I was looking for. :/ That's not a knock against Patrick and I think more diversity in games (and believable gay/lesbian relationships need to happen. Bioware's is UGH-wooden), but talking about it a lot just... isn't appealing.

Really sad about this. Patrick really added some variety to the complexion of opinions at GB. And
I dont say that just because my personal ones are closer to his than anyone else's.

His loss makes GB a much less interesting place for me.

Best of luck Patrick, I'll be following your next move.

Im not saying instantly, I'm just saying eventually after the new people get their bearings. Alex is still there.

Maybe in couple of years, but I wouldn't worry about it. They've referenced on many occasions how excited Vinny was to let his creative juices start flowing. I'd expect some new, regular content coming out of NYC, and Vinny (along with Alex) is going to be spearheading that... not that SF guys. Vinny ain't likely leavin' anytime soon, and with 3 video editors (two of whom have no kids) there's probably less travel pressure on the ol' dad now too.

What's Sessler up to these days, someone should talk him into joining GBeast

Probably not the best fit

To be honest, it didn't seem like he was a particularly good fit with GB. He brought a bit of highbrow mindedness to the joint sure, but I think overall he just didn't fit the tempo.

Still, hope he has luck in his future endeavors.

Not Surprising. I've been expecting this since he moved. Glad he stuck around to get some more good content out to us.

No more Scoopin with Spooks : (

Patrick wrote this at the end of his last article.
I can't say where I'm going yet, but I'm not leaving editorial, and I'm definitely not working for Dave Lang. Keep tabs on Twitter, and you'll have an idea of what's happening soon. As for some of my regular Giant Bomb features--Spookin' With Scoops, Worth Reading, Coffee Videos for Answering Questions, etc.--those will reappear. Stay tuned. Twitch, YouTube, and Tumblr are probably solid places to bookmark.

I am interested to see where he goes next. I was at shock first reading that he is leaving. His content was some of my favorites in the past year. I am hoping him good luck in the new job and I am definitely going to follow him there too!

iirc its for the New York guys and we'll see if they do get someone who does well with all of it (Dan has done well so far and people are still hoping for Cara).

I guess we'll see eventually
