Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

what a shame. though, i do agree with the sentiment here that his long distance relationship with the rest of the crew was problematic. it was the source of a major disconnect between him and the rest of the giant bomb identity. but he continued to do great work and a lot of it. and he has grown noticably during his tenure at the site. i admire him for all these things; his work ethic, his openness, and his evolving views regarding violent social hierarchies. he challenged the games enthusiast audience in a necessary way. so, here's cheers to you, patrick. keep working hard. your content—and character—are appreciated.

i love giant bomb. they are a very special group. and they are a home to their audience just as much as they are a home to each other. so i hope he genuinely appreciates the weight of this opportunity, which he has always expressed.

that said, if he is leaving giant bomb to work with temkin, i will be truly disappointed. allegations aside, i don't believe he is a successful advocate of the openness he espouses. i know the two maintain a personal and professional relationship, and that's their business, but it's not something i could personally see myself suppoeting.

Really sad to see Patrick go. He's probably the person who generates most of news content on the site. Giantbomb will be noticeably thinner content-wise without him. Also, I found him to be the most passionate about videogame out of all bomb crews and he and I share so much gaming taste. Who's gonna talk about Monster Hunter now? Danganronpa? or some horror games? Really big loss for GB.

Is it sad I have no idea who he is?

If you're a Giantbomb fan, you're lying that you don't know who Patrick is. If you're not a fan, why are you here?

I was always harsh on Patrick because I always expected more of him because I really liked him. His output this year was bad and almost nonexistent, and his video stuff was so cheap and ugly that I felt that it drug down the site into generic YouTube level quality; it really bothered me that he never fixed his setup, and that he never did more solo Quick Looks that showcased the game and not himself (which I always though he didn't do with Spookin' and the other videos that had his face plastered in the corner. This is a pet peeve of mine that I know is in the minority since so many people love this garbage from various YouTube personalities).

But, I will miss him. I really wish he got the chance to do actual reporting for the site and not rewriting press releases or other outlets' news. The quality of the pieces were hit and misses, but I really liked his earlier output where he interviewed developers and had longer editorials on games or whatever. His perspective was unique for the site, but always felt on the verge of being snuffed out.

I guess I would feel more sorrowful for this news if it had happened a year earlier. I think the last 15 months of GB has been the worst, and I rarely finish a podcast episode now without skipping large chunks; I don't like Brad's hosting, I can't stand Dan at all, the ads are too long, I think Jeff has never been more dismissive and obnoxious, and Vinny left. It started when Dave departed and snowballed from there for reasons within and outside of their control, but the site means nothing to me anymore. I watch maybe 20% of the Quick Looks, none of the Dan stuff, and the constant fluctuations in the quantity of output, where some weeks have a ton and other weeks almost nothing, has been frustrating for years. The only reason I watch as much as I do is because my premium membership renewed during a really rough time of my life and I didn't have the time or mental awareness to cancel it before it happened so now I feel compelled to watch some of the content since I paid for it.

I wish Patrick the best and I hope he grows and advances in ways that I hoped he would at GB.

Patrick had to hold down a significant period of this year (and 2013) with a disproportional amount of filler content while GB got it's shit together. So while I can't completely blame him for it, yeah, his tangible contributions to the site were kinda disappointing (he kept promising to improve too, in both production and scope, but never got around to it) - it was his willingness to be open-minded and expand GB's horizons is what I'll miss.

watching his spelunky and binding of isaac runs were some of my favorites, along with scoops and the wolf. i'll miss pat on giantbomb.

Jason? but that's if he chooses to

Best of luck to him. I was pretty disappointed when he left for Chicago, and this seemed to be something that was destined to happen as soon as GBeast got an office.

Well, they're gonna hire a new news editor, so that side of things will get fixed. But I agree, his openness to try new things is what I liked the most about Patrick. Glad to hear he's going to keep doing editorial stuff.

He has to have some inkling of an idea of where he is headed right?

I find it hard to believe that he would quit a well paying job with complete freedom to do what he wants without something tangible lined up on the horizon.

Well this sucks. I really like Klepek, he's knowledgeable and one of the last real journalist in the game industry. Here's hoping he found/finds another job that he stays for a long time.

This is a HUGE bummer. Patrick had a very unique voice and did a lot to sort of expand GB's reach/what they covered. This is a massive loss for the site.

That being said, I wish him the best of luck and look forward to what he does next.

Patrick just make sure to buy some heating equipment ok, please don't let your dog freeze to death this winter, i know it will be hard without a job to make money with but at least buy some sweaters or warm towels ok?

I feel like some of the other people at GIant Bomb stepped on Patrick's opinions sometimes because he wasn't always in line with the group's tastes. This is compared to the 1UP days when people were largely equals (except for Luke and Shane sometimes). I also feel like Giant Bomb was so much about other stuff that his work didn't really shine there. It didn't feel like a place where I'd want to go for the type of thing he writes. (Always hidden behind the video content)

I remember him saying he was super excited for this job so I guess it worked out well for him but I wish him well. It's hard to imagine it being less fitting than GB where-ever he ends up.

It sounds like he has a new job, but is just waiting to announce it.

I can't believe it's been this long since Patrick joined the website. It still feels very recent to me. Good luck on your future endeavors, Patrick!

i still question your taste in games :x

Wow that's a huge loss, his taste in games brought a much needed diversity to the group. Wish him well.

Well, this kind of sucks. Patrick fills a role at Giant Bomb that no one else currently occupies, from his day to day duties to his tastes and his ability to talk eloquently and intelligently about games without too much hyperbole in either direction.

I guess the writing was on the wall when he moved to Chicago and had to work alone. Not a lot of game sites feel like a family the way GB does, and the long distance thing was never tenable long term no matter how much they tried. Makes me a bit worried for GB East, to be honest. Ah well. Best of luck to whatever comes next, was nice to have him around while it lasted.

I did enjoy him having different opinions at times from the group at times. It offered a more "balanced" conversations.

Will follow him wherever he goes from here best wishes Patrick.

It's a shame one of the only people that brought a diverse taste in games to the site is gone. I liked that he'd at least try everything and give it a fair shake.

Hopefully he can go on to do better things now.

Whoa! Didn't see that coming. I wish Klepek all the best! Loved his & Alex's discussions on Bombing the AM. Will miss him in his Giant Bomb role.

That's my biggest problem with it, now we will never hear about games like Kentucky Route Zero because they are going to be too busy with Dan talking about the latest dumb big blockbuster where you strap c4 bonds to rhinos.

Patrick had a really interesting and diverse taste in games... What a shame.

Oh wow he seemed to be hinting at it and we were all joking about it in the thread but this is still quite surprising! Patrick is a good guy and I hope he succeeds in whatever he does. It better be something super awesome to follow up Giant Bomb!

That's really surprising. Huh. In all honesty he was one of the last I'd figure would leave.

It's probably safe to assume he's going to be doing something in Chicago, I imagine? Maybe some new venture with Max Temkin or something?

I don't play a lot of games anymore or listen to the bombcast much really but I liked Klepek even from his 1UP days. Hope he lands on his feet.

Patrick, at first I wasn't that into you... You were encroaching on sacred territory on the Bombcast, as far as I was concerned. But you really grew on me, and I'm sorry to see you go. Best of luck in your future endeavors, and I'll gladly listen/read your stuff wherever you end up.

Kinda shocked.

Patrick pumped out almost 70% of the sites content and almost 100% of its written content.

He had a unique take on games when compared to the rest of the staff and for better or worse he brought in new and interesting people to talk about video games.

I hope whatever he does he continues to write.

Thanks for the 4 years Patrick.

Definitely going to miss Patrick. He was a great hard news guy and did some great features. Also really loved Bombin in the AM. He also shed light on a lot of games that I never would have heard of and played stuff that the rest of the cast wouldn't. He will be missed :(
