The Wii U and its ability to produce amazing visuals.

No. Cell not outperform ps4 cpu in the cpu task. Cell support more gpu task, quite different.
No, CELL actually has more performance im some respects than PS4's CPU. PS4 has far more performance than PS3 due it's more modern GPU heavy architecture though. Wii U also has comparable overall performance to PS360 thanks to it's more modern GPU heavy architecture, despite it's slower CPU.

I have said this a bajillion times already, but art direction is going to become more and more prevalent over raw horsepower as a factor on determining good visuals with each passing generation. Hardcore gamers obsesses with realism and polygon count far more than the average player.

MK8 looks like ass on my TV with its lack of AA at 720p

This is mostly true

We usually see native pics on high density displays, so they look amazing.

Take that AA-less game rendered in low res, stretch it on a 1080p 50 inch display, and enjoy the blurriness

I don't agree that it looks like ass though! It looks cute and pretty. But it's not specially groundbreaking...

Also I don't have Pikmin 3 (I even own Pikmin 1 got it when I got my Gamecube for Xmas in 2001 but that isn't my kinda game it seems) but, the environments in that game.

Damn son.

What is Anti-aliasing?
To put it simply by example:

wiiu_screenshot_tv_0186khn.jpg

Notice the head of Captain Charlie has jagged edges, this is know as Aliasing.
Anti-aliasing (AA) is simply a process which reduces the visibility these jagged edges providing a smoother more natural looking image. There are plenty of examples on google of PC games with AA on and off.

Mario Kart's aliasing is an absolute eyesore, especially on 4player

How many console games with 4 player split screen have good image quality? Please name them.

The aliasing on most Wii U games is pretty poor ill give you that but I will take some jaggies over the vaseline filter applied to so many PS360 games last generation.

I would love to see Nintendo's output on a PS4+ spec'd machine. I can guarantee we would be getting 1080p60 with much better IQ across the board. But that is what I want across the board for every console game.

also, the ability to release games that look as advertised, and run well without major breaking bugs, or running below FPS target.

say whatever you want about Nintendo, but they know how to deliver quality.

The content in most nintendo games is ridiculous.

I know I'm late in responding to this, but WindWaker HD has an atrocious frame rate. I don't consider myself super sensitive to things and it really bugs me.

About Wii U graphics:
1. they look really good (which confirms Nintendo first party devs know their stuff, not to say they offer the best polish in the industry)
2. they achieve this nice balance of looking good, while still allowing Nintendo to be prolific as an editor

This 2nd point pleases me the most.

Tropical Freeze manages to look overall great, without any single element looking outstanding... hard to explain, but there's just so much going on, with so much colour. Truly beautiful.

you have to understand that its the first time nintendo fans got this games on HD,ps3 and 360 owners got that seven years ago,let them have fun, nintendo games on hd are glorious btw

in some sense..these games looks awesome but aren asking much..a open world game like zelda will really test the machine
As a PS3 and 360 owner for all 7 years and a PS4 owner. I can safely say that many first party games on Wii U outclass what I have seen from both the PS3 and 360, most of which do so at 60fps.

WW HD frame rate stutters when there are too many bombs going off at sea and... that's it. A shame it's not locked all the time, but it's hardly atrocious, it's not even bad.

I can assume you didn't play the game to say shit like that.

Game is a smooth ride all the way, it lags only if you let those spiky ball things from Forest Temple spawn everywhere. I never noticed this specific framerate problem until a GAFer showed a Youtube video about it. Plus I finished the game at this point, thinking it was perfect all the way. ¬_¬

So, yeah, atrocious my ass.

That pizza in the Pikmin pic makes me hungry. They have almost hit the sweet spot with the visuals. Adding a little AA is all that's needed. But considering what they've pulled off, I'm not going to cry too much about missing AA.

I completely agree with the OP. The Wii U produces some amazing visuals and the games just seem to "pop" off the TV screen.

Mario 3D World, Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3, Smash Bros, Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker come to mind and I am in love with the visuals.

i haven seen anything on wiiu surpassin the last god of war.nothing

For pretty much anything other than GPU workload the jaguar destroys CELL. Jaguar is far better at normal CPU tasks than CELL.

Haha I love how the first few pages are people pointing out this is nothing new and we shouldn't be having the same threads yet are happy to produce a Nintendo hate thread with nothing new every few weeks. Priorities I guess.

Nintendo's artstyle is absolutely gorgeous and always has been. Developers for them care more about the players experience than hitting that technical feat, which apparently the vast "majority" of gamers care about (I highly, highly doubt this). I've always got a big smile on my face playing 3D World, Smash or Mario Kart 8 because the games are just so much fun, and look amazing. The experience is something I can't really get anywhere else for myself.

Actually, Nintendo has been working for over ten years on refining a cohesive art style for 3D modeling and CG worlds. It began around the time of Smash Bros Melee with a concerted effort to craft official renders that translated their traditional aesthetic into CG.

Ever since then, every few years they released a new set of character renders, and promotional CG which demonstrated they were hard at work refining the style. The advent of the Wii U seems to have coincided with their CG art direction [LOCKING ON] to exactly the right look to capture the classic Nintendo vibe in real-time 3D.

I think a correction would be "Nintendo and their amazing ability to put out great graphics even on underpowered platforms"

Any third party game on Wii U is kinda eh, especially when they don't even run as well as on PS3 or XB360 but nonetheless.

Also, this was on PS3 and 360:

I like Nintendo but there's no need to sugarcoat it. It's not as if we haven't seen anything like it before, but it is wonderful how Nintendo games are good at putting a smile on your face because they are so cheerful and colorful.

The credit for the "amazing visuals" should go to the game developers, not the console.

Art Direction > Everything else graphics wise.

Indeed. Nowhere is this more clear than in Xenoblade Chronicles — it has the graphics of a PS2 game, but the art direction makes it look absolutely stunning.

I wouldn't say it's atrocious, but it takes a noticeable dive when I mess around with bombs.

I can assume you're being an ass, don't accuse me of not playing a game because your opinion doesn't sync up with mine. Specifically the frame rate in the boss battle with Gohma was horrible for me.

It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

The framerate is good.

You're saying in your first post that the framerate in WW is atrocious as a whole, expect feedback. The framerate is perfect 99% of the time.

The framerate is good.

I've played the game, seen it with my eyes, experienced it, and it bothered me. Sorry if you disagree but it took a lot away from the experience for me.

Edit: most of the game is fine, but there are specific parts that really bothered me for clarification.

I don't think you can made the equivalency in graphics from a modern game to a PS2 game if we're talking about PS2-era CGI graphics.

I still find funny how people throw silly comments like that around. Either that, or I played the wrong PS2 games

One big thing Nintendo has managed to accomplish over the past five years, is to establish a large middleware/graphic library division, and a network division. Nintendo Land caught my eye, and Mario Kart blew me away.

Nah, ambient occlusion isn't even almost a new thing. It's probably just nostalgia and the fact that you don't see Zelda in that resolution in a game that often.

Ah, the old "name Link Zelda" troll... I lol'ed, but it's probably just nostalgia.

Or maybe the poster who posted the pic was actually referring to the great looking plushie instead of "Zelda" (rofl), but whatever.

Nintendo didn't design the Wii U to be a powerhouse. They aimed for efficient power. The Wii U only draws 34 watts. Look at the games and screenshots with that in the back of your mind. I think that is admirable and impressive.

It's funny how Mario Kart (of all things) became a strong reference of how visually good Nintendo games are.
4 years ago no one would believe that lol

The Wii U is barely serviceable. Everything that it does that is impressive is due to Nintendo's software designers and artists, not the console. Those visuals are good in spite of the Wii U.

Nintendo's games usually are masterpieces of artistic direction and design. You can see this from the fact that even most 1st party Wii games (originally SD) usually look spectacular without any changes besides increasing the resolution in Dolphin. One area that Nintendo sometimes is lacking in is texture work, but their games seem to be created in such a way that they can be visited years, even decades later with only minor improvements in resolution through the emulation software without looking extremely dated like a lot of early PS3/360 games already do.
