Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

biggest disappointment is that I keep on expecting Alex to make his move when he quickly tried to get rid of games off the list... yet he never did :(

Still find it hilarious that bayonetta 2 of all games ended up number 2 with pretty much zero debate about why its so up there. It wasn't going to win 1st, yet wasn't reshuffled somehow by the end.

Platinum game at 2nd for GOTY for giantbomb.

insane.

Oh definitely. I don't even understand why he bothers turning up to these when his opinion is completely disregarded and he doesn't put up much of a fight. I found it really annoying when Brad was complaining that they didn't let him put a game he was passionate about into the top 10, when Wolfenstein was Drew's no. 1

It's really kind of awkward that the unbalanced power dynamics of the group are exposed so openly. I'm going to finish up my table to see a what a GB top 10 looks like without those factors at play.

Didn't someone else do a weighted list of GOTY with Giant Bomb one year to see what a more representative list of all the duders would look like, or am I thinking of some other site? (or was it even a gaming site...?) It sounds vaguely familiar.

Yeah, they took the individual top ten lists and made a top ten based on those rankings. I remember seeing it last year anyway.

A little more than halfway through today's podcast. Jeff makes no sense on Destiny. Pushed Destiny for Biggest Disappointment, then argues to get it into the top 10. Actually says there's a shot it'll end up on his top 10 list.

A lot of Jeff's arguments in Titanfall's favour yesterday sound a lot like his arguments against Destiny/

just saaaayin'

On paper, it makes totally logical sense. Biggest disappointment doesn't mean worst game. The best game of the year could also be a massive black hole of potential.

On paper.

But Jeff's never been one to be about "This is objectively well designed and fun." If he's not feeling something, he hates it, and he has complained endlessly about how boring he thinks Destiny is for months now. There's nothing inconsistent about a game being a biggest disappointment nominee and also being one of the best games of the year, I think Jeff thinking it's good is weird, though.

The goty podcast is purely for our entertainment. The only lists that really matter are their personal top 10's...the GOTY podcast deliberation is simply an exercise to see who has the most assertive personality and/or loudest voice

In saying that, Mordor is a deserved winner as it is the one game on the most of their lists (hell, they all had it in their top 10..can't say the same for Bayo 2)

the snarky suggestion someone mentioned yesterday re: Jeff just compiling the winners and runners up and then everyone else just arguing for other inclusions/replacements was kind of absurd but it really would save so much time

Like, COD is on the best game list.

Shadow of Mordor GOTY!?

The way I see, this is just a testament of how horrible AAA games have been this year. Is not that Shadow of Mordor is a bad game, its well crafted and the nemesis system is great... but man I couldn't even finish it, bored me to death after the first area.

There's something to be said about awarding best game to a PS4/XBONE game that shipped complete.
Alien wins.

Is a game with a season pass "complete"?

Yeah, I probably wrote a bit early; I am listening a bit further and the explanation is a bit better, but it was still weird to hear him say he was considering it for his top 10. Surprising to me.

It just is weird hearing him say that based on months of him gently railing on and dismissing the game. It seems a bit like he lets his personal expectations color his feelings on the game, and that's his own fault. But then he says something like that. Just generally confused but you are correct that it's logically sensible.

Alien wins.

That shipped complete and *wasn't a HD remake, When you have TLOU HD, GTAV, and Halo MCC as probably the most compelling reasons to buy a "next" gen console, you know you have a problem.

I just realized Patrick was my favorite for trying tons of games that the rest of the crew would never play like danganronpa and 999. :( They better get someone with an open mind like Patrick.

Just finished listening. Good, interesting discussion, even if I disagree with lots of their picks.

And congrats to TharpeDaddy for winning his bet. I honestly thought you were a goner, but man, Jeff heel turned big time and let Brad in.

look even stardust put destiny in his top 10. are you going to disagree with stardust?

Never, of course I wouldn't. I actually love Destiny, am just kind of confused by the ups and downs of the crew talking about that game. Seems like the pre-release hype and coverage really colored their perspective.

Maybe is not in your taste, you know?

I'm not saying is a bad game, nor I'm dennying that particular gameplay is not my cup of tea, I mean I don't even think is a bad choice as GOTY... but common!? seriouslly are you settling for that? Is that what we should expect for GAME OF THE YEAR

I don't have either game.

Doesn't change the fact some of the best "next" gen titles you can buy right now are actually HD remakes of games that came a year ago.

Which game do you suggest should ? I said earlier, Mordor appears on ALL of their top 10 lists...no other game in the overall top 10 did.

I've yet to really play the new Wolfenstein, but these arguments brad is making in favor of cutting it for destiny are so fucking asinine. Victory through filibuster, yet again!

I've played almost 70 hours of destiny and I was completely baffled by brads talking points about the game. Talk about insanely hyperbolic. The story missions absolutely don't get better as you get higher, they just throw more enemies at you with bigger health bars.

There are like 6 modifiers in total and really don't impact the gameplay in a super meaningful way.

I think the best things about the game are its gameplay and the raid. All the other things he was saying were completely nuts.

I've yet to really play the new Wolfenstein, but these arguments brad is making in favor of cutting it for destiny are so fucking asinine. Victory through filibuster, yet again!

I think the argument about how the knives are thrown in Wolfenstein was clutching at straws.....but hey, he managed to get his game into the top 10 lol

Pretty damn close to what they ended up with....except for poor ol' Wolfenstein and Jeff's master stroke with CoD. Drew let me down on the Wolfenstein defence force

Nearing the final hour of today's cast, and I'm really enjoying this discussion.

That Dragon Age discussion was pretty cathartic. They really dug right into what's wrong with that game and why it really doesn't deserve any special recognition.

And after hearing Brad and Jeff's opening commentary about Destiny, I can totally see why it would be included in their top 10.

hold the fuck up

dragon age didn't even make it on there? how in the fuck did that happen? did rorie not make a list?

Having just listened to that section:

Shitty combat.
Mostly uninteresting characters.
World and story doesn't do a great job drawing you in.
A lot of things are poorly explained (the establishment of the Inquisition, for example).
Spamming the ping button is not fun.
Side content is crap. Too much of it.
The world feels disconnected.
Poor game design to open the with the Hinterlands.
Lots of weird little bugs and character placement issues.
Healing system sucks.
Having to go back to your base to use the War Room was frustrating, especially with no fast travel directly to the room.
Navigating the environments can be frustrating at times/easy to get stuck on environmental objects.

There was probably more.

hold the fuck up

dragon age didn't even make it on there? how in the fuck did that happen? did rorie not make a list?

I think the one thing which hurt Dragon Age (at least with the bombcrew) was the fact it was released not too long ago and it is epic-ly long. None of them really had as much time to sink their teeth into it (with the exception of Jeff...but I think that was more to do with him watching his GF play)

That's actually kind of impressive how close it ended up being to the actual list.

Drew's niceness means that he doesn't fight for things. He has by far the least forceful personality of anyone on the crew. Shovel Knight seems to be the one that snuck in. It wasn't particularly high on anyone's list, but it was on a lot of people's lists.
