Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Drew should've fought for Wolfenstein to be on there. It was his #1 game too. Seems absurd for there to be 3 shooters on the list ahead of it.

Far Cry 4 definitely deserves its position, but if CoD made it than Wolfenstein certainly should have.

There were more guys at that table who played Wolfenstein and enjoyed it than CoD. If you go by that rankings list, it should have made at least 6th

Well, that's not true universally. There are enemies that you cannot vault over, and enemies who you cannot counter, and enemies who can poison you, or kill you in two hits, or hit you from range. There are some enemies that just don't take damage from sword hits as well.

I mean, I'd never argue Mordor's combat is particularly hard, but claiming the games a joke because the most basic, easily dealt with enemy can be handled by spamming several buttons is very disingenuous.

Okay, that is all true and I apologize for that. Let me rephrase: even with the additions of all the mechanics offered, the difficulty in Mordor is almost non-existent for me. Both as a result of core gameplay foundations for certain enemies, upgrades for Tallion, lack of timing requirement (outside of carragors without fx prompts) and arguably abuse of mechanics on part of the player. The game just wasn't difficult and part of that is because the combat system felt like a stripped down Batman game.

The most difficult the game ever got for me was trying to find fire to throw a warchief in as he was immune to everything else I was throwing at him.

Well, over 90% of your combat encounters will not be these complicated scenarios. It's not often you find guys that are completely immune to swords and such, especially if you don't die. And it says something about the game that the only time any challenge enters the scenario is when the opponent is damn near invulnerable to your attacks.

I dunno, I found after the first hour or so 90% of the battles I ran into had at least one of the variables I listed, and a good 50% had two or more (ie; a battle where I was facing archers, a bezerker, and maybe an Uruk who could poison me).

Again, it didn't make the game what I'd consider hard, but I wouldn't be able to pull the type of shenanigans you see in that video posted and win.

I wouldn't disagree with this, I didn't find the game super hard either, but it's nowhere near as easy as that video makes it out to be.

The disappointing thing is that those immunities don't seem to apply to the NPCs. For example, a guy immune to melee and ranged can still get hurt by NPC attacks.

That lack of consistency in the systems kind of annoyed me.

I think Drew was more willing to compromise because he already had gotten a fair amount of games he liked on the list. (Shovel Knight, Hearthstone, Destiny, Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor).

Jeff really only liked one or two things on the list sadly. Plus Jeff's seniority obviously overrules everyone else.

Maybe not that video with the single button presses, but definitely this video.

I'm going to get a "no fun allowed" response to this, but I feel the skits have always been a round peg / square hole situation. None of the crew are all that comfortable acting in front of a camera and few of them have the comedic writing / timing to pull off a successful bit. Does the GB audience actually want it? It seems like the video editing time would be better spent on some sort of QL+ style scenario (revisiting more games in QL style, maybe some focused, edited discussion, etc). Playing games is what Giant Bomb is.

we got to see brad's fluff balls (not a euphemism) so it's ok

I enjoyed the top ten videos they did in the past the most. It had the same stupid flair to it, but in a more concise and interesting form.

Ryan in the sombrero hat shooting fake pistols was a pure delight.
Maybe he implied that, but 5 games from his personal top 10 made the final 10 (including all the top 4)

I don't know how he could be unhappy with that.

Yeah, I guess you are right.

Pretty much. It's amazing that it somehow got to 4th, when he was the only one who had it on the personal lists.

Definitely.

its weird that everyone that is making these compilation lists based off individual staff lists seem to miss 80 days (alex's 4th), or am i just crazy?

Anyhow, GOTY podcasts made me pick up The Fall (only $5 on steam atm). really great adventure game thing. takes about 2-3 hours to beat, and is REALLY good. Even if you were spoiled by the podcasts, the adventure and the story up til then holds up.

it's what set GB GOTY apart, and to me an event.
What skits are these guys gonna do this time.

rather than whelp time for List Wars

Agreed. The skits are hit+miss, but I'd rather watch them than the guys quickly rattle through their top 10 like they use to. I find their personal top 10s the least interesting part of this entire process.

There was a case to be made for Destiny as worst game. While it was not nearly as bad as other games mechanically, the scale of its failings as this huge production, the amount of time and money invested, the player-hostile systems, the grinds... it could have "won".

The top ten rattle off was boring, I agree. I mean, I guess I'd just rather more quick looks. Do what you do well.

ok. but you'll have to play ghostship aftermath for as long as i have destiny

Has there been any podcast or video of Brad commenting about the destiny dlc?

Am oblivious about destiny as a whole, but i remember people being quite angry about it in that thread a few weeks back.

That's why there was the 'most disappointing' category (which it almost won). I think even the most fanatical anti-Destiny people can agree the core mechanics of the game (ie shooting) is pretty rock solid and better than any halo game before it

No way it deserves to be mentioned with the worst games of 2014

since Patrick is leaving. I'm worried about next year's GoTY
I don't think Dan, Jason, and Drew are opinionated enough to counter the other guy's argument

I'm getting to the big debate on Destiny's case between it and Wolfenstein, but I thought I saw someone say Brad pulled the PR shit that was being thrown around when Destiny came out and people were responding to the mixed reviews. If I hear him say '10 year plan'...

And I incredibly enjoy my time with Destiny.

Did Jason not post up a list?

Yeah they kind of let Brad have Destiny at 10 even though you could tell they would have liked Woflenstein there.

They implied that he may be involved in some capacity for next years GOTY....but that could just mean his top 10 text list gets posted on the site. Who knows

Who knows what will happen between now and then though...we could see a few more hirings

Did Jason not post up a list?

Both Jason and Rory didn't

is there a mode in mordor where there is an endless stream of mooks and i just attempt to get the highest combo possible without dropping it

Just got through the destiny fiasco. Brad claiming Alex "got two of his games on the list" so Brad wanted one for him might be the most immature part of this whole fiasco. He seems to forget that this is GIANTBOMB's list. I know he's hosting the bombcast now and all but he does not "deserve" to get one of his pet games on the list as a result.

Patrick legitimately tried to evaluate the games they were considering in the end there and Brad did the equivalent of putting his fingers in his ears and yelling over everyone else.

Destiny on the list at all given the argument they had is worse than Skyrim.

They really just seemed to be tired of listening to Brad try to dance his way past every Destiny flaw and just conceded by saying "Well if Brad feels this passionately about it". One of his arguments was that he spent more time playing it then anything else, but so what? WWE Super Card sounded like Jeff's most played game of 2014.

I remember Brad talking shit about the fact that Final Fantasy 13 only got good after a large chunk of the game was over, which is exactly what Destiny does. He said after 15 hours he was having fun or something? Maybe don't force me to play through 15 hours of boring shit to get to the good part? It sounded like the majority of the table straight up disliked Destiny with Brad being the only defender and Jeff eventually realizing that Brad was not going to give up on "Giant Bomb's Official second biggest disappointment of the year" and doing what he could to just get it on the list so Brad would just shut up.

I wish Dan would of fought harder for Smash too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AV9W2ZdmjU

That video is a much better representation of how Mordor combat isn't hard yes. But even there, watching that video, he's definitely using more than one button for most of it, and loses all his health at one point.

Again, not saying it's a hard game, but posting that first video as someone representative is just misleading.

There's alot of ignorant remarks on other games as long as its not Destiny.
I thought Brad was about to cry making that argument

Pretty sure this is why they gave him it.

Also, fuck Nintendo. Like, they're at their 8th Mario Kart? Give me something new. Yes, CoD AW is the 8th(!!) CoD since MW4 but they just changed the gameplay so much, its like a whole new game.

Finally finished that Epic Podcast
I don't know if I'm going to take next year GOTY
The thing that soured me was how they just brush Nintendo games aside

And I'm not even a Nintendo fan. no Wii or WiiU

Yeah, you can double jump. Call of Duty, always innovating. I only hope there's ten Call of Duty games for this generation of consoles, too, so gaming can stay fresh.
