Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

All I see is you praising a game that was absolute crap when it came out in 2012, with drop rates worst than destiny, and when you got a drop the stats didn't even gel with your class.

I see you praising a game that took years to get the formula right

Destiny is 4 months old.. 4 months

I really hate this defense for Destiny. I've heard it multiple times since launch in multiple threads.

Game devs don't live in some vacuum... if they couldn't learn from other games that's their fault. Diablo 3 launched with a bunch of really really bad systems in place. Blizzard fixed them, over quite a period of time. Yes, that's a fact.

Why does that excuse Bungie? Did Bungie have blinders on? They never played other games? I'm sorry, games coming out in 2014 who can't learn from games that came out years earlier, that's not a valid excuse for anything.

Even if you do 1/5th of what I have done, you will Beaten Destiny at it's own Game!
Remember I'm an Outlier to the curve that is addicted to Destiny...

oh god those times. Also I'm upset cause I really need to get Eris's rank up so i can finally get some needed upgrades.

Personally I think Destiny is a better game than it was a couple of months ago.

I'm up for civilized debates on this game, when people go out of their way to askew the discussion to piss poor one liners or regurgitate the same ol' shit so to speak of, then people go on the defensive, then that doesn't help move the conversation along

Remove -100 hours from each class, I know it won't make a huge dent, but the #'s for that site are off after figuring it out from other sites

get all purple armor with your marks
level it until you are 28, do at least one public a day
do nightfall each week once you can (26, right?) edit: corrected below, 28 now
raid

do the fun stuff during, bounties etc if you care to, but thats the stuff you will need to hit to progress.

Return it.

throw it in the trash

And we're done here.

Hahaha and yet again first post and we're done!

Return it while you can.

Take it back if you still can. Biggest waste of time ever, and not even that fun (horrible writing, voice acting, no story, endless grinding, RNG...)

this, and first post strikes again..

Read the policy on returning digital games.

It's a cynical, soul-destroying Skinner box.

Return it and play some less visciously vacuous video games.

Return it. You bought it digitally like I did though so you are stuck with it...

This was LITERALLY the first thing that popped into my head when I clicked the thread hahaha

Lol i played till lvl 26 and grinded a shitton. fuck that game and it saddens me to see people defend the crappy game..

*slow clap*

Find the receipt and return it.

First post wins again.

...and wait for the inevitable (hopefully improved) sequel.

And get Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition instead because there it rains legendary's also the content keeps fresh because of the nephalem rifts.

First post and all that. Seriously though, it's fun till you hit that softcap then the real
struggle
fun begins.

Best first post.

Just stop playing right now, trust me

nightfalls are level 30 now so 28 is the minimum now.

Impressive... Most impressive.

I have a question GR! How did you get your Eris Morn faction to 3? Was it just doing a few bounties everyday or was there a trickity-trick. It's a real slog to get that faction up on account of only a few bounties and no other activities gaining rep for her.

It's getting old seeing every single gaming side Destiny thread shit on the game.

The game has problems - very obvious and very annoying problems - and it'll be a while before that course is corrected (if it ever is). Very few people will defend this game's glaring flaws, of which nobody faults others for being disappointed by.

And yet, by some fallacious, ass backwards space magic, we've reached a point where other people's disappointments are contagious and applicable to everybody else. GAF has gone from criticizing the game to criticizing the people still playing the game, as if it's impossible to like the game in spite of boneheaded descisions like releasing a lame ass story or charging 20 bucks for 5 bucks worth of content.

The people still playing Destiny either enjoy the game for what it is or are stuck grinding for what it could be. Whatever their reasons, they're probably getting their money's worth out of it. I don't see anything wrong with people enjoying a flawed game, especially when most of them actively participate in the community to help others and offer feedback to improve Destiny.

This projection needs to stop. By all means, call the devs out on the bullshit, but please keep some of those vitriol opinions about the people doing that very same thing while playing the game in check.
This 1000%! Destiny is a weird one; so infuriating but so addictive at the same time. I compare it to Gears of War 3 horde mode; I played that constantly, one of the best co-op experiences ever, and Destiny scratches that itch for me. As a guy who generally avoids pvp in games, my 45 year old reflexes can't hang, the fact that I can skip it altogether in Destiny, and still enjoy online interaction with others and still feel like I can contribute, is huge for me. Those denigrating others for enjoying it are just immature; when you get my age you'll be more appreciative of the little things. I've seen some shit!

So much backlash, but the OT is almost on 13.

Why do people proclaim this as some sort of "IT'S GOOD!" barometer? Halo has 22+ "OT"'s, surely it's for everyone!?

NOPE.jpg You just have a lot of posters buzzing about in the thread posting any thing and everything to make that many "OT"'s.

---

@OP: I only played the demo and gave up after a bit because the gunplay was (IMO) weak. The one thing I'd say is to play on Hard or whatever the "hardest available" is for you. Doing it solo (since the demo was nearly #dead) you have to work on staying alive which made it sort of engaging to play but at the same time showed Destiny's weak gunplay in spades because you were pew-pew-pewing a bunch of "boss" level characters in the head while dodging the weak/cannon-fodder enemies so they didn't kill you.

I do agree with the "don't buy anything in the store" people. Most of that stuff looks good but you'll probably get drops in the story missions that'll be good enough to replace your base/starting equipment.

That said: Good luck. Destiny didn't grab me, hopefully you'll find something worthwhile for you in it.

Blind Watch: Always, always go for C. Never, ever A.

Firebase Delphi: Always, always go for A. Never, Ever C.

First page is like a grave. Not your grave, the Worlds Grave.

I didn't realize there was so much hate for this game, damn. Anyway.. I borrowed it from a friend and am only at level 6 right now. The shooting mechanics are great IMO and some of the battles are already tough. The one I'm trying to get through right now is pretty cool and I'm open to help to get through it:
I forget the name but it's three bosses that you have to kill with a special sword. I've only seen the first of the three as he keeps killing me almost immediately. Any tips on how to kill these guys?

First week I was just doing it regularly
Second week you can double bounty her up
Get to to the tower by daily reset which is 1AM PST/4AM EST, be there by 3:55AM
Wait the 5 minutes and her stock will "refresh", grab bounties, do them and log off, log back in on the character you just did the bounties with, now there are more bounties to be completed
You can trick the server to think give you double set like that

Wow at the 1st page graveyard. Mods went ban happy. Most are troll posts sure, but some are actually giving him advice and giving an opinion. Why were they banned?

The bumper+bumper+trigger combo stunlocks them and does good damage. Also, use your (sword) super.

One more thing before I go:

Whatever you do, don't discard Plating Plasteel, Sapphire Wires, and Hardonic Essence. You need those for armor upgrades. You'll need a lot of them.
Weapon Parts you'll have in abundance so you don't have to worry much about not having enough for weapon upgrades.

One tip I can offer that made levelling my second character more enjoyable for me is after the first few missions when you unlock patrol and bounties spend 30mins-1hour on them getting yourself a few extra levels so as you progress through the rest of the story missions you are always 2-3 levels ahead. Doesn't make the game completely easy mode but just helps with some of the more tanky bosses etc.

Yikes, are all those bans from this thread? Man I liked the beta can the main game really be that bad?

Ask yourself: Would you enjoy doing the content in the beta over and over again for hundreds of hours?

If yes, then the game may not be bad.

If no, then there you go.

I personally loved the alpha and beta, and for the most part, loved playing Destiny with GAF, but out of principle, I can't continue playing Destiny. Not with Bungie running it the way they are.

I'd also like to note I assumed the final game would have more things to do and more story than the alpha and beta.

...I mean, technically there are, but it's so bare bones and you can tell we're playing a shell of a game.

Destiny is pretty dang fun up until you get towards the upper 20s, due to the slowing down of progression and shift to longer grinding. If I had any advice to give, I'd be try to get a friend to start with you and experience it together.

This is important. I only played Destiny as long as I did because of the people I played with.

Without friends, the game is garbage.

It also doesn't help Bungie still doesn't have matchmaking for normal raids.

Wow at the 1st page graveyard. Mods went ban happy. Most are troll posts sure, but some are actually giving him advice and giving an opinion. Why were they banned?

"I just got X game and I'm about to start playing, any tips?"

"lol that game is shit"

People got banned because they made zero-content shitposts with no relevance to the thread. If someone thinks Destiny is so bad that they go into a thread about it just to express how much they hate it to someone who's sincerely interested and has questions about the game, maybe they should re-evaluate their posting habits.

One more thing before I go:

Whatever you do, don't dismantle Plating Plasteel, Sapphire Wires, and Hardonic Essence. You need those for armor upgrades. You'll need a lot of them.
Weapon Parts you'll have in abundance so you don't have to worry much about not having enough for weapon upgrades.

Hmm, I was the opposite, I always had an abundance of Plasteel Plating but was always low on Weapon Parts when I was still leveling up. But ya, save everything. I didn't even know you could dismantle the different parts, what do you get for doing that?

Thanks to everyone for contributing so far. It probably is my fault for not investing time in reading up about the game (damn that impulse buyer in me!), but I will give it a try and see how it is. If I find I get a decent length of time out of it then that is money well spent for me. I don't mind a bit of grinding (big fan of Diablo), but if it's not fun then I won't be too disappointed to bail out if I've enjoyed the run up to the grind fest.

I have to admit I am pretty nervous about playing it now haha. My excitement level has dropped a bit but we'll see how it goes

Destiny is a very fun game, especially if you have expectations set correctly. Don't go in expecting a great story. :p

Use the post 20 leveling guides in the OP of the community thread. The game does not explain its own systems well, but that's why we have Hawkian. When you hit level 20 - which will be pretty fast, just play through the story and you'll get there - read the first couple leveling guides.

The best way to play Destiny is to not grind. Just play it the way you want, have fun, and you'll (mostly) get what you need along the way.

Not to keep going on about this, but blizzard is blizzard, they made Diablo 1 and 2, they make world of Warcraft, they knew better, they have experience

This is Bungie's first attempt at a game like this, it went through a lot of revisions and I'm looking forward to destiny 2, in the meantime I don't care if I pay $20 every couple months, it's the only game I play.

Nothing at all.
By dismantle, I meant discard. I should go and fix that.

Wow, this thread is a graveyard.

OP, don't look for too much story. It won't make any sense. Just find people in the OT that will play along with you so you have someone to level up with.

Looks like a mod had a field day with a Gjallarhorn in here.

Well done.

To the OP, see you in the OT!

Looking forward to have you on my friendlist soon. I must've added atleast 100 cool Gaffers, thanks to Destiny. Lol

Probably the best community I've ever experienced.

Why must you mock the Hornless.

Were Public Events mentioned? Hit up http://www.destinypublicevents.com/ (or the mobile app) and try to do at least one event a day once you unlock patrols. Easy way to get some marks/upgrade materials.
Lol 7 pages and not mentioned once
Public Events are cool
In the beginning I thought some were impossible until I learned that the different color shields surrounding enemies get taken down by the guns with same elemental damage

I think people hating because of the grind don't realize that because of all the updates, it REALLY easy to get to level 31 in this game compared to people playing at launch.

There's no more engram frustration because they always come out the same colour or higher.

Materials aren't as bad because you can buy them.

The only thing you have to grind out is vanguard/crucible rep to buy legendary armour, which isn't that hard with bounties and activities

I don't think he or anyone else mentioning number of OTs is saying it because how good it is, but how popular it is on the same forum where you have "return it" drive-by's in every Destiny thread.

The point is that Destiny has a large and active community. That's....it, really. No need to be upset.

Personally I think Destiny is a better game than it was a couple of months ago.

Fundamentally I think the reason for the hate the game gets is because it's not the game most of us wanted.

Personally, I was expecting a FPS Diablo pseduo-MMO, or basically a more serious Borderlands mixed with MMO. Which on paper sounded great, and for a bit was pretty great. Just they handled the sub-genre parts so poorly. I'll try to break it down with my disappointments:

Loot: It wasn't really just because of the RNG, or the lack of drops.. it was the absolute lack of creativity to the drops and the lack of diversity. We pretty much have just your basic FPS gun assortment and armor with the most basic stat changes and upgrades. After scoring a few legendary items, getting loot was just unsatisfying because in the end everything just felt the same pretty much while playing.. which brings me to my second item...

Gear upgrades: Trying to get the build you want is painful, not just because RNG hates you or grinding to based-Xur. It's the fact you have to downgrade to upgrade after the initial grind of the game. It's not like you get a drop that's instantly an upgrade.. because while it might have better base stats than what you use it's not upgraded.. and upgrading is a grind.. so choosing to maximize your build becomes a grind fest to get shit back up to where you were BEFORE you equipped the new item. That's not fun, it's counter-intuitive to a loot game. I want a drop to be instantly be better, new, fun. It doesn't work that way.

Story: What story? Enough's been written about this.

Farming: I know this shit's tedious in almost every MMO, but I typically enjoy this kind of stuff... but the amount needed for stuff is just insane. Put that together with being forced to gather resources to upgrade gear that is essentially a downgrade UNTIL you upgrade it makes it forced.. over and over. It's just a bad system. Items I gather should be for making new items.. or gems... gems that I can remove and add to new items. Why oh why is that not the system they chose?

Matchmaking/Social: They basically made Destiny feel like Dark Souls.. I never really felt like other people playing were real people, they might as well have been NPC's.. I can't really communicate with them.. so why bother.

Structure: I'd rather have had the game be Patrol into missions, as opposed to hub into missions. It'd give patrol more weight, be a meeting ground, and go from there. If it had the social aspects and you started from patrol and logged into missions it'd feel more connected.

World: It's beautiful, but sterile. It doesn't feel real. It's like I'm playing on a movie set, where these things aren't real. I can't intereact with anything, they are just static things.

Light system: Probably the worst system of level progression I've ever seen. The fact you can hit 20 so fast, and then forced progression with this is just insane... it completely removed any motivation I had to continue on.. I didn't enjoy it past the mid 20's.. basically it limits Bungie so much on how they can make loot work because LOOT IS LEVELS. It's such a fundamentally HORRIBLE way to level up a character. It's now so ingrained as a fundamental core system that they can never TRULY fix loot as it's completely tied into how you level up. To this day, I can't see how any greenlit such a terrible leveling system to a game. Just let me level up by doing missions and shooting shit... there is ZERO reason to tie loot to level so tightly that you can't really mess with one without having to balance the other.

I get why people love it though, it's core gameplay loop is addicting. Yet when you drop out of the loop and look at it as a whole, it's deeply disappointing to what it COULD have been.

Yikes, are all those bans from this thread? Man I liked the beta can the main game really be that bad?

Bad is relative of course, but the game certainly has a lot of shortcomings that most everyone recognizes. Having said that, we who play regularly, enjoy it despite the disappointment.

I expected the first page of this thread to be a graveyard. The maturity level of this forum is truly embarrassing.

oh i completely agree. Even though i still play it casually, it is easily my biggest disappointment of the year. For the way destiny currently is, it needed WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more content for it be a great game.

I just got the game the other day because it was only £20 and I didn;t really pay to much attention to the game either, but it seems fin from the few hours I have put in.
I would say to just forgot all these impressions and see for yourself, I really don't think it's a bad enough game for you to regret it.

I seriously don't understand the hate for this game

me either, i started to try and write something up to help the OP but i'd say just jump in, if you like it have fun, and bring any questions to the OT.

i honestly play this game daily since launch and i'm having a better time than i have had with most other games i put too much time into.

my luck has been on the rise too which may be helping, yesterday i got 5 exotics and 2 legendaries that i'll actually use!

Goodness Gaf.....I am dissapoint. The OP isn't asking whether he should get the game or if it's a good game. He's asking about best strategies since he's PLAYING the game. There's thread shitting and then there's just fuckery. Very dissapoint.

Anyways, I suggest Hunter class. Gives you a lot of flexibility and is more fun IMO.

I'll leave my other thoughts for the OT.

Damn though....

NOPE.jpg You just have a lot of posters buzzing about in the thread posting any thing and everything to make that many "OT"'s.

It would help if you read the rest of the post you selected that single line from.

It goes on to reason why the large amount of OTs has value. It's clearly a divisive game, and the large amount of players in the OT clearly enjoying the game is a reasonable counter to the large amounts of negative opinions.

Never did I write "13 OTs makes the game good".

Destiny is still one of, if not the best playing shooters out on new consoles. I can't think of one with better controls and mechanics although I haven't played Wolfenstein or Titanfall.
