Anyways, my best advise is to find some friends to help you out. Honestly, playing with other people is a lot funner than by yourself, even if they are complete strangers.
To be fair, there was a very large public beta that wound up being fairly representative of the game they released in qualitative terms. I can empathize with people expecting the final game to have a lot more content than it did, but you'd have to ignore the large amounts of media available to be completely blindsided by the kind of game Destiny turned out to be.
I'm also not saying that the complaints people have are invalid in any way. I agree with many of those complaints to some extent, I just happen to have an overall positive opinion of the game because of how much I like certain aspects of it.
Based on some of those first page responses....I doubt that was particularly the case at least for them. Just doesn't pass the smell test for me. Also it seems it's become popular to hate the game and shit on it and when they happens you get people who never even intended on getting the game, coming into threads like this to get some laughs.

thought i'd do some research for fun, by checking psn/xbox tags in the profiles of all the shitposters earlier against the destiny servers, to see how far they had progressed in the game before making their decisions
surprisingly, here are some comments from gaffers on how bad the game was but have likely never even played it (no active profile on the destiny servers for the gamertags/ids listed in their gaf profiles (take this with a grain of salt):

Funny I was just posting about a similar kind of issue in a thread yesterday about returning digital games because of pre-order hype etc. Maybe its just because I'm older now and I have been gaming for so long, or maybe its just my personality type, but I just do my best to not fall into the hype trap because it has always bitten me in the butt. Surprisingly I had little interest in this game and when I got into the Alpha and Beta I gave it a shot. I didn't care what Bungie was saying, I figured playing it would answer my questions and it did, it scratched that MMO itch that I love and the FPS itch which I love even more.
I actually did have some hate for the game early on, back when the first loot cave was still open and I was thinking the game was all about RNG and nothing but RNG. But After it got closed, and I started looking into the reputations and what it actually took (not that much work really) to get the gear from those vendors I started doing that and have had a blast ever since. I've got about 700 hours in the game now and loving every minute.
I think the social aspects people complain about don't bother me because of my PC roots, I'm just used to playing with friends using Skype / Vent / Mumble or any other form of communication because not many people on PC use built in chats. So I was also used to using forums for raids in EQ, WoW or just Skyping with friends to setup group play times for Battlefield games, it was just second nature. And now in Destiny sometimes I use the OT, but a lot of times I just randomly join on friends either in game or in their party chat and we just figure out stuff to do. Yah I don't talk to randoms in the game, but I don't really talk to randoms in any game I play so no skin off my back.
Anyhoo, as others have said, best advice, do the bounties, good rep, good exp, if one seems to take too long just do a quick google search you will probably find a place to finish a bounty in just a few seconds / minutes. Save up the daily finished bounties until they are all done (all vanguard or all crucible, not both types combined) and turn them all in at once for a higher chance at an exotic bounty. I started ignoring exotic bounties because I have done each one so many times now, pretty much 3x of each one so I have no use for them anymore.

unfortunately it appears that hating on destiny around here has been the "cool thing to do" recently. it's nice to see that GAF won't tolerate blind hate.
I am also of the same mindset and usually avoid the "hype" and speculation threads on new games and mostly just go for things that might interest me.
It is just silly this game is hated upon the way it is, despite what bungie (or the publisher) might have claimed it was going to be. Destiny has certainly earned its price tag for me, I've logged maybe 150 hours and still log on every other day or so to mess around with friends and do the random bounty. I've throurouly enjoyed this game from day one.
Anyway, to get back to the OP in some sort... Like others have said, read the OT's, make friends, get to level 20, and then start doing raids and strikes.
The biggest thing for me at least was leveling up all the different factions to level 3. It opened up a lot of armor and weapons that allowed me to tailor my character to have the kind of perks that worked well for my build and weapons I liked to use.
It wasn't like I was really focused on doing it, I just wore the different buttflaps for my Titan and I just naturally got there while running strikes, daily quests, and a bit of the crucible.
That would be Computer :lol I had a lot of fun doing raids with him. All those numerous failed flawless attempts and stuff haha.
Also OP, just enjoy the game. There is a huge community on GAF and you will find tons of people who are willing to raid with you. As others have suggested, start by reading Hawkian's guides.
I think it's nice if you enjoy the story at the beginning, we have may grown used to it, but destiny's world is really beautiful.
All the different planets have their unique flavours, just enjoy it.
Practical piece of advice: don't overthink about what subclass to choose once you have both options available (for whatever class you decide to try first) as once you've maxed your "preferred" subclass you will/should also max the other.
Both will have their use in different occasions and they make the characters more complete and interesting to play!
Start with warlock or titan. Hunters just aren't that good.
Auto rifles and hand cannons are the best primaries. Pulse rifles are garbage.
Your main objective should be to get to level 20 as fast possible and get your hands on legendary (purple) or exotic (gold) gear. Do that through daily bounties, story missions on heroic, and crucible. Make sure you are leveling up your vanguard or crucible rep as you go along. Everything else you get along the way is just temporary. Don't be afraid to dismantle old equipment. Don't clog up your inventory and the weapon and armor parts are needed later.
SMH at all those shit posters and SMH harder at those who never played it and yet still shit post about it.
Here is a personal tip:
When you get a better higher level weapon/armor as you progress to level 20, do not scrap those old weapons/armor you used before, instead keep them in the vault for now. It would be helpful for you in future if you want to start a second/third character for raiding/weekly chances and those weapons/armor you didn't scrap can help your second/third character run through the story missions again easier to reach back to level 20.
I think it's more about thread shitting and not adding anything to discussion. But that is just my guess. It becomes very tiresome when you ask for tips for a game that you got and like and a good chunk of the response are something as useless as "return it"
I have been there my friend...for a very long time. But last night, RNGesus decided it was time to ascend. My avatar is now a symbol, that even the Hornless can be redeemed.

1. Work your way to 20 as quickly as you can.
2. Do the vanguard bounties as soon as they become available. If you don't understand what you need to do for a particular bounty, look for a guide. Or check the Destiny subreddit. They usually have your daily bounty guide.
3. Play the strike playlists to get vanguard marks. You can also do public events. It's 4 marks per event and an extra 2 for your first one of the day. You need to be collecting 100/100 marks every week.
4. Buy raid gear from the vanguard vendor. You need vanguard rank (bounties) and marks (events, strikes), so it'll be a grind. This is what people here have a problem with - lots of repetition. Of course, you'll start getting the hang of all the strikes, and, personally, I find it rewarding being able to do a strike quickly and getting better every time you do it, usually with better gear and better weapons.
5. I waited till 28 to do the Vault of Glass, but you can do the normal version at 26. That will get you shards and energy that will let you upgrade the legendary armor and weapons that the vendors sell. RNGeebus might smile upon you and reward you with exotic weapons.
6. As soon as you're able, do the weekly strike for strange coins. There are 3 difficulties, each give you 3 coins. You'll need 13 coins to buy exotic armor from Xur. I recommend the helmet because the raid helmet is the hardest drop to get.
7. Do the nightfall strike when you hit 30. That will give you shards, coins, or maybe an exotic weapon.
8. At 30, you can do Crota. The first chest is easy to get alone. Look up a guide. As soon as you're able to get into the raid by yourself, you need to get this chest every week.
Join the Destiny subreddit on Reddit. It's a great site and the fireteam subreddit will let you find people to do strikes, raids, missions, etc.
If i were OP id be turned off by this game by sheer volume of hate this game recieved in this Thread alone, nevemind how much hate it been getting in other parts of the forum as well (OT excluded). The saddest part is that only extremely small but EXTREMELY Vocal minority of GAF populous that seems to poison the well.
I am glad these guys got taste of ban hammer because fighting them for past 4 months (as evident by my post history) has been exhousting up hill battle.
If OP has somehow survived the blitzkrieg of hate and still has energy and will to listen to what we have to say, then here is what i got to say:
1. Communication - If you played MMO like games (WoW, Everquest, etc...) as well as games like Diablo 2/3 you will feel at home as far as social elements go and group finding. Microphone is a must.
2. Looking for Group (LFG) - The worst and by far thr best part of Destiny is its communication methods. For what ever buffling reasons Bungie has made a very poor platform for playing this game socially with people beyound your friends (RL or online (pre-destiny)). Because of that, games community created tools to do that on behalf of the game it self. You need to use these tools to find people to play with, you need to group up with folks via LFG means.
3. Platforms - there are few options abailable to you (this is what i use or would use)
3a: GAF Destiny OT: great social hub with your fellow guffers, you have folks like GraveRobber, Zoba, Hawkian and many others who will help out. If You wish to party up just put in a request and some one will respond or vice versa.
3b: www.destinytracker.com is my go to spot for LFG, its a one stop shop for real time chat client where people post requests and recieve responces right away. Sign up for the site, link your destiny profile and go to LFG chat section, specify that you wish to chat in PS4 section. Lets say you wish to do games very first raid (called Vault of Glass (VoG)) on normal difficulty, you would type the following message: "LFG VoG Normal Fresh - PST/ADD SGamar"
All you doing is: Looking for group for Vault of Glass, you looking for normal dificulty fresh run (from beginning) and asking people to add you to chatroom or friend request your gamer tag, replace SGamar (my tag with yours).
These tips are more geared towards social and endgame components but it does not take long to hit that part of the game, sooner you hit the ground running the better.
PS: ignore everything that Lik and Figa have to say! They are Warlock hating Hunter racists! Opinion is invalid of inferiour class users pppp

My gripe is that faction gear now requires more than "a bit" of Crucible after the removal of trading materials for marks.
It'd be nice if they re-added some alternative way to acquire PvP currency. Maybe let us trade Vanguard marks for Crucible ones at a 3:2 ratio or something.
My best advice :
Try to access the bounties as soon as possible and, until then, you may play the story in easy. This will save you some time.
Of course, all the tips posted here are pretty good, but a lot depends on how you usually enjoy the games.
I have a couple of friends who do not bother at all about the gear and they just enjoy the story and some strikes, so it's pretty important you play the game exactly how you like it. You don't necessary have to rush to the 20th level. Just keep your pace!
p.s.: I noticed a lot of bans here ... Unfortunately I'm not surprised, because sometimes, some people don't really realize how their posts are absolutely useless and can even be hurtful.
It's like you totally didn't even see the 10 people banned for derailing the thread for similar notions
Anyway, we offered positive advice, But no on really spoke on glimmer management.
It caps at 25k
You'll come across items like ether seeds that you can use that will help you gain glimmer for every enemy type associated with it. Good to pop on strikes.

Yah Crucible marks can be a pain to get, I would say revamp some of the Crucible bounties, and have a select few that pop up in rotation also reward marks, maybe like the fusion spree, or post mortem kills ... nothing big, 1 or 2 marks for a reward on like a 1/3 of the different bounties.
The official subreddit is massive and full of super helpful people and links to great resources for newcomers and hardened Raid crews: http://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/

Pick missions at your level or slightly below to level efficiently. You can play harder missions if you're looking for more of a challenge, but your progress will go more slowly.
Use the bounty board as soon as it becomes available. The XP rewards are huge for those missions.
Equip the highest-damage weapons you can find. There are differences in the primary weapon types (auto rifle, pulse rifle, scout rifle, hand cannon) but in the early game DPS is all that matters.
If you encounter a monster with a glowing shield, switch to a special or heavy weapon that matches the color of that shield. For example: Wizards have red shields, so a solar weapon will tear down the shield very quickly.
OP asked a genuine question, and got shitposting answers that contributed absolutey nothing to the thread, which are a waste of everyones time. Its on par with the commentary gained from a "first" or "didnt read" comment. You can joke if you joke constructively, it has been done to much better effect elsewhere, but try to remember that Gaf tries to be better than all that.
When in doubt actually read the rules, and it will make sense.
Joking is saying something funny, the first page had no amusement to make me laugh at any of the commentators that got banned
Most were repeat cyclical posts that have plagued Destiny since it's arrival
Amazing how these same posters would grind their agenda of drive-by posts on mentioning things that relate nothing to the discussion at hand
