Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Loving this final GOTY podcast.

Making me realize how out of the loop I was this year though. Didn't even know what some of these games were like Jackbox or Luftrausers.

I find it strange that nobody talked about SoM but now suddenly sweeping up all the GOTY awards starting two weeks ago.

What, SoM has gotten a ton of hype from everyone who has played and reviewed it. No one expected the game to be quite good and the nemesis system is arguably the most "next-gen" thing we've seen all year and really changes up the dynamics of that open world.

It was a war of attrition. At a certain point nobody wanted to hear Brad argue with Alex anymore. It's a strategy that someone employs every year and it gets annoying IMO. I've listened to too many of these.

yeah, it really is, that's what bothers me way more than destiny winning.

I've never played Luftrausers (even though got it from ps+) any idea if a PS4 port is coming for it?

There were like five Mordor hype threads, there had to be a rule against hype threads made because of the game

GB themselves talked about it almost every week, especially Dan

It's had two separate quicklooks and a GBE Playdate

all i know is I'd be extremely disappointed in Dan if he can't get MGS5 into being GOTY 2015.

And I have no clue if the game is gonna be good or not!

If Ground Zeroes is any indication, I bet it'll be up there, both on its own merits and through some determination by Dan.

I was surprised when Jeff described Ground Zeroes as "sort of okay". I thought it played incredibly well. Basically a two hour demo for sure, but mechanically it's pretty strong.

I would love a PS4 port. I've enjoyed Vlambeer's past games a lot and this looks pretty fun.

It's really strange that there is no cross platform racer that garners the same feverish devotion to it.

Very strange indeed.

MK8, FH2 and Drivecult are a lot better then any other racer I can think of from the last couple years.

edit: except for Sonic Transformed, which has a pretty strong fanbase here

Everyone liked Mordor though so that wasn't even up for debate. Destiny was the focal point of arguments but nobody except Brad had a strong opinion about it. They just didn't like it but weren't going to put the effort into tearing it down.

There were two people that were arguing for it, and even Jeff, the biggest opponent to the game, admitted something along the lines of "I liked it more than the other things we are leaving off".

I was halfway through the best game stuff when I had already written up a part praising Brad and the others for doing the right thing and not putting destiny in the top 10 because it was a personal favourite of one editor (but not even his goty!).

Then that happened. Maybe they'd be happier with a rule that everyone is allowed to name one game that will appear on the list no matter what, without all the fuss.

Just in the GOTY episode, and am SO happy Patrick made a good fight for Binding Of Isaac. I can't believe these guys aren't putting it in the top ten of the year, there's not an indie game on PS4 I played and enjoyed more, not even close. I've got Far Cry 4 sitting in my disc drive, and I'll still boot Binding of Isaac first when I sit down to play in the evening. "Just one quick run".

Yep, Patrick fought valiantly for it's cause....but it was a lone fight. It was actually Patrick's stream series of the original BoI which got me back into it. That game never really clicked for me until I watched someone else better than me play the game

Now I watch Northernlion's streams...that guy is just insane, but the amount of time he has put into it, you'd expect that.

I'm bummed Vinny hasn't been podcasting for some of the year. I enjoy his point of view on things - great to have him back for these podcasts.

Also, I am legitimately shocked (don't read if you don't want one of the top ten spoiled)
Brad managed to get Destiny onto the top ten
. I absolutely did not think that would happen.

Great podcasts all around. I wish Jason piped in more than he does. And the podcast finally convinced me to buy Divinity while it's still on sale. Looking forward to it.

Just got done listening to the final podcast, I'd think that after all the zany games they champion and how outside the box they typically are, there would be no way they would pick Mordor for game of the year. That game had zero personality and I played it to completion and left behind only one trophy.

I love the crew they have there, but man are they falling into a trap of sticking with AAA western games as their champion game. It's sad that I now think IGNs editors now speak more freely about obscure games being the better games in the market.

Just finished the heated Destiny section...lol for a while it sounded like they were having an intervention with Brad, especially when Vinny popped in with his calm, soothing questions. All in all I can't say I'm mad about it's inclusion. I mean, there are other games that made the list because of one or two people that the rest of the panel were largely indifferent to like JazzPunk or Mario Kart so Destiny for Brad probably fits that same bill.

I'm very proud of Alex and Dan for getting Mario Kart 8 onto that list. I was terrified it would be lost.

But Brad... what the hell, man?

Thank you Bomb Crew for another year of fantastic content.

I can't disagree more with your GoTY choice but hey it's your list not mine. The top ten as a whole is pretty close to mine but I'd have a couple more Nintendo games.

These end of year podcasts have become a Christmas tradition for me - I stick them on usually while playing some open world Ubi nonsense - FC4 this year.

Next premium sale I'm jumping on board.

No way, José.

Then we wouldn't have a Thread Title to chuckle over for years to come. Talk about an ominous premonition that wound up being 100% on the nose, judging from the past 20 pages.

Drive club didn't work correctly for a month, it deserves nothing.

The online didn't work for that period of time. The single player never stopped working. Not to mention that the developer has addressed the issues, improved the gameplay/balancing/IQ, released free content, cars, and new features such as weather that drastically change the game.

But yeah, I guess it doesn't deserve anything right?

Driveclub is the worst game I never played and everyone who likes it is a doodyhead.

What does this even mean?

And it'll would have been nice to do all of that work before releasing a game.

I mean

If no one choosing the awards actually liked it, I don't think there's much of an argument that it deserves anything

Maybe community votes will do better?
