Patrick Klepek leaves Giant Bomb

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

He was one of the major reasons why I've been a premium member for so long. :(

Edit: Patrick if you're reading this I just want to wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I have no doubt that whatever you're going to work on will be something that I enjoy.

Not to mention Jeff seems like a shell of his former self since Ryan passed.

I disagree profoundly, Jeff seems to actually be living and enjoying his life now instead of relying on videogames and mundane shit to define his life. He almost never talks about his personal life anymore because he probably feels he doesn't have to justify it to anyone.

I haven't entered this thread because I haven't been interested in Giant Bomb for a while, but just clicked today out of curiosity of where he's going, wondering if it was to a game company. I always looked at him as Exxy the mod, never forgot. Same with a lot of the Gaf mods. MrAngryFace, what ever happened to him.

I agree with what you said, but personally i believe this has more to do with that fact that a lot of the inside scoop we got from Jeff was because Ryan dragged those stories out of him. Without Ryan, there's no one at the site to engage him on it

Seems like the same guy to me.

Good, I hope I'm the only one who feels that way. After Ryan's death it seemed to me like he hasn't been as into it as he used to be.

I will say, the stories of his insane roommate were some of the highlights of the old Bombcast. But it seems that he doesn't have to deal with that any more.

Dan defending Ground Zeroes as being well written and above criticism is enough for me to know he's a crappy person with nothing to say that I want to hear. He needs to grow up beyond adolescence at some point.

lol that makes no sense. I guess a bunch of people here on Gaf are still teens since they really like GZ.

I can agree with this. I went back and watched some old GB videos and there was a big difference with Jeff. He was laughing more and seemed happier. He has had a tough couple of years though, so it's understandable. I think he will return to being Jeff after a while.

After listening to the final Bombin' in the A.M. and the last day of deliberations for Game of the Year, I'm getting the feeling that he's just going to go to another outlet rather than doing something new and interesting. I wonder if he just got tired of being on the Giant Bomb staff for one reason or another.

I wonder if it's Polygon.

He may be branching out and trying new experiences which isn't a bad thing for him. I'm sure Ryan's passing had a profound effect on him and has changed his life/way of thinking in a number of ways.

I really hope its not Polygon, I would be really disappointed especially with how much I like Patrick and to see him go to that site would be a downgrade imo.

I assume he means that on the podcast, Dan didn't seem to have a problem with the
vagina bomb
thing.

Well I didn't see it as him not having a problem with/seeing it as a gross. I think he was making the argument that it was an important shifting point in making Big Boss a villain.

Maybe he wanted to do more investigative work sincd GB is slowly becoming a glorified Youtube channel.

I haven't played the game, but I thought Dan was referring to the after credits epilogue or whatever as the reveal.

I could see it being an upgrade in his mind if his interests are more in getting the scoops and breaking stories. It seems like there would be a lot more opportunities to do that kind of work on a site like Polygon.

Makes me wonder if Patrick didn't enjoy being a personality.

GB seems really driven by the group being together. Even Vinny and Alex have each other over the on the East coast. Patrick was on his own in the Chicago, and though the GB Chicago joke was funny, that seemed unlikely to change. I can't blame him if he felt like it wasn't the same anymore and maybe there was a better way to do things for himself.

That said, if that "better way" ends up being Polygon, sad to say, I'll probably never look at any more of his work. I don't go to Polygon as I have a distinct distaste for the drivel they put out, and seeing him thrown into that would be a huge shame.

Patrick sort of found something with the Iron Galaxy people, to the point where they actually tried to make a weekly show out of streaming from their offices for a while.

My greatest hope is that the Cards (Tempkin) and/or some of the Iron Galaxy folks start some sort of side project website that focusses on games and the wider issues involved in them. There were a lot of interesting ideas floating around there, and it would be great to see them expand on it.

I'm pretty sure he already stated in a Quick Look that he would not eat shit because he didn't think he'd be able to keep it down. He might be able to lick up three feet of snail trail though.

Meant it more figuratively :P . But he can take it if he gets "exposed" as an idiot which isn't causing any different reactions anymore. It's beating a dead horse just collecting everyone's disdain for him.

I was skeptical of him at first but Dan is probably my second or third favorite Bomber now. Dude is hilarious and I keep wondering how many insane stories he's got left in him. Eggshells are egg whites? Faking bad eyesight and getting it for real? What's a mortgage? C'mon son.

Turned a thread about Patrick leaving into a thread where everyone takes turns shitting on Dan for mostly trivial reasons.

Good job, GAF.

It's almost like he's setting them up to make fun of him on so many occasions and they leave him hanging free each time.

GAF is doing what GB don't (do strongly enough).

It would be nice if every post was a love letter to Patrick, but I can understand there being some posts about GB in general and how it's going to be going forward.

Clearly many people are missing some closure to the dumbness.

I like him in the group, but sometimes he really needs to be tested.

Can we not enjoy the content they give most of us free without ripping them to shreds in our off time?
Patrick was an awesome member and he will be missed in the community, do we really need to come in here and throw mud at the remaining crew? Yes, Dan seems to be pretty innocent but he's hardly offensive. I mean if you asked the guy for a helping hand I can't imagine he would say no. I also agree they talk a little too much about wrestling but it's the bombcast, it's their podcast to do with as they please and I think it's a small price to pay for the endless hours of entertainment they give us.

Wow.... Talk about insanity. I think your the one that needs to grow up.

I'm not in support of anyone that trivializes the experiences of real life rape victims. You're right, though. I should grow up and be accepting his atrocious opinions and ignorance like everyone else in his sheltered life.

And, pray tell-He asked knowing that the answer would be inane- is anyone trivializing experiences of real life rape victims?

lol. So anyone who is a fan of Kojima and/or Ground Zeroes and thinks it's just a weird ass game with some bizarre content choices has "atrocious opinions and igorance." Absolutely absurd (even more so than GZ).

To be fair, Patrick was pretty incensed about that ending during the GOTY podcasts.

Loved Patrick's work over the years, but never really thought he was a great fit at GB(seemed like a site that had no need for "news"). Good luck to him in his professional journey.

If you were feeling happy enjoying Giant Bomb content, the best place to feel all negative and crummy is a NeoGAF Giant Bomb thread. Bonus unwarranted psychoanalysis of the whole staff and the interpersonal relationships!

Nah Gaf is the second best place for that. Look at the YT comments for the true best place.

It was gross and maybe unnecessary but the leaps some people are making here are absurd.

I can't even fathom the kind of mental gymnastics you would have to go through to think Dan liking GZ is him trivializing the plight of real life rape victims. Did you even listen to their discussion of it?

It's interesting because he broke two fairly major stories, but the site isn't really about that at all, so it's not clear if that had any measurable impact on long term traffic or those types of metrics.

Are there real life rape victims in Ground Zeroes, or is this in regard to something completely unrelated?

Kojima absolutely was with the Paz subplot, and Dan lapped it up. Nobody else on staff liked it. Go back and listen. Everybody, including Jeff, shot it down as gross, bad storytelling, and callous. Dan said it was important and necessary to explain Big Boss turning into a villain. It absolutely is not.

Patrick sums it up well here.

Do you even have to ask that? lol

Ok but you were saying Dan trivializes real life rape victims because he thinks the scene is important. Not that he enjoyed it or anything but because he said it was important.

Wow. I hope you stretched before you made that leap.

That doesn't at all excuse you from immediately assuming Dan trivializes rape victims. Those kinds of rash accusations shouldn't be acceptable.

So what would you call him saying that using rape so flippantly was enjoyable and good storytelling. I'd call that acceptance of using rape as an unearned plot device. It only further hurts those actually suffering, and for what? Cheap shock value? I'm not saying he acknowledges he's doing it, but I absolutely believe he inadvertently is.

Wow. I hope you stretched before you made that leap.

How do you feel about Patrick's stance on it, out of curiosity?
