Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I don't really listen to GB much nowadays, but it is just me or does it seem like Jeff gertsmann doesn't really like most games any more? it seems like he forces himself to say good things about the games that are highly praised because he feels he has to? I often feel the same way around my "gamer" friends because they love games that I think are complete garbage. I just feel bad for him =[

The online didn't work for that period of time. The single player never stopped working. Not to mention that the developer has addressed the issues, improved the gameplay/balancing/IQ, released free content, cars, and new features such as weather that drastically change the game.

But yeah, I guess it doesn't deserve anything right?

See, you're reaching good conclusions now. Well done.

They should have made it work at launch.

And it'll would have been nice to do all of that work before releasing a game.
They should have made it work at launch.

Not sure if any developer should be 'punished' for actively improving a game. I'm sure if they were aware the netcode was broken they would not have released it.

I mean

If no one choosing the awards actually liked it, I don't think there's much of an argument that it deserves anything

Maybe community votes will do better?

I wasn't really responding to whatever reaction GB has towards DC, did it get mentioned recently or something?

The game' being exclusive to a single platform obviously has a lot to do with the crazy rift between people that actually played it, those that don't even have a PS4, and the ones that just use 'dc is bad lol' on a meme level. I can't help but chime in whenever I see someone spreading misinformation in a thread.

People are so weirdly aggressive regarding DriveClub. It's just crazy to me.

The thing is about Drive Club is that it isn't actually about a club of people racing or anything like that, it's actually a club! This particular club is of the bludgeoning variety, and it's mainly used on Jeff. (Edit: I forgot to mention, the "drive club" is actually a drive shaft. But that term doesn't really have the same majesty...)

Poor Jeff.

Describing fixing a broken/unfinished game as "actively improving the game" might be the saddest thing I've heard this year.

Poor Jeff.

It's hard for me to enjoy listening to someone sigh, whinge and whine about games. This is not politics, it's games.. I will miss Patrick's enthusiasm and fair criticism.

Jeff's dismissal (once activated) is just so severe, where he just refuses to see any positive in a game. I remember him completely dismissing/ignoring/being repelled from Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, ...

Describing fixing a broken/unfinished game as "actively improving the game" might be the saddest thing I've heard this year.

But this is just wrong?
The only thing broken was the netcode. And you won't hear me defend that.

All the other things? Balancing, new features, improved IQ, weather,... these are not 'patches', Weather, Photo Mode, (Replays) were never promised for release day. The devs were pretty clear about those things coming after launch.

The IQ was fine at release, they just improved it. Same about the sound engine, which received massive improvements recently. These were not elements they were criticized on, but they still made big upgrades here.

So how is it 'sad'? They are 'actively improving a game'.

Do you consider Minecraft as being broken/unfinished just because Mojang keeps improving it on a monthly basis? (extreme example)

Jeff is vocal about what he dislikes. This is not a bad thing. It lets viewers/readers understand his biases and tastes, which helps to better inform their opinion.

Agree or disagree, it's hard to argue that Jeff puts a lot of care, thought, and effort into his work as a Giant Bomber.

Hey, I love criticism! It's the basis of any worthwhile discussion. But with Jeff it mostly seems to get expressed by sighing, and extreme, blanket, dismissal. It just doesn't lend itself to a great conversation outside of the comedic value.

The Drive Club is my favorite weapon in Dark Souls. Actually, the Scud Mace is pretty good too.

Jeff is pretty negative yeah. I feel he's been doing this stuff for long enough where he's not super excited one way or the other about most games, as he knows how this goes and how hype can be dashed (Destiny). I still really like him, because he is super honest.

Wolfenstein was fucking robbed.

Brad fillbuster strikes again i guess.

People always want to see their favourite games represented in GB's lists but personally I do not give 2 shits about Mordor, Bayonetta 2, Hearthstone, Mario Kart 8 or Destiny.

I respect that the GB guys do though (and in Destiny's case just Brad), after all, this is their list and not mine. It doesn't change how much I enjoyed my picks for 2014

It's been a hard couple months for Drew. First MCC is broken and then his #1 game was denied from being in the top 10.

The fact that it was Drew's favorite game of 2014 (that most of the others liked) that got bumped off because Brad wanted "his" game, reminded me of a kid upset that they didn't get the "right" slice of pizza or cake at the birthday party, and getting upset until a nicer kid offers to trade theirs.

This. I don't think any of brad's arguments were very good for defending Destiny, and it really seemed like he was throwing a tantrum.

Question from Jeffs Tumblr regarding Destiny

The way GOTY for staff is done is just fucked up. Brad gets Destiny on the list because he argues louder and longer and it goes to #10 because everyone sees 5-10 as filler slots that are there to appease people. More people on staff enjoyed other games over Destiny. Brad alone enjoyed Destiny the most, does that really mean it should be on the staff pick for GOTY? He has his personal top 10 list to put that on. Also if only a couple staff play a good game it can't make it too high in this setup.

Jeff Gerstmann
If people felt more strongly about it, they should have fought harder to keep it off!

This is true of both sides. No, I didn't like the game. I didnt like the handling, or the ridiculous penalties and the online features were a disaster before I convinced Amazon to give me a full refund. I found FH2 to be a much better product. This apparently enrages a very vocal, tiny minority and puts them in a frothy rage. There's been multiple times (not here because I think people know it would be bannable) where people have claimed I'm an idiot and a troll, etc. I mean, God damn folks, I didn't like a game you like. Chill out.

I wouldn't mind trying it now after all of its recent updates and fixes and such, but I'm not paying for it. If they ever release the PS+ version I'll download and see what's up. If not then I guess I'll just miss out, and maybe jump on a theoretical DC2 if it is made.

I didn't agree with Brad, but if he was that passionate about it (which he was), I think it deserved to have a spot on the list. The GB Game of the Year discussions have never really been about having a consensus.

Brad trying to spin that Destiny's lack of content means that it's "so good that people want more of it" was far worse.

"Seemed" nothing, that's precisely what it was.

Destiny actually had two backers. Jeff also thought Destiny was better than most stuff on the list. Alex also basically got two games on the list; Hearthstone and Jazzpunk.

If they actually cared about being objective they would just make a weighted list with their own personal top 10s to make up the overall list. The drama makes for a good podcast and having fits at what happened regarding so-and-so game just proves they were successful at creating that drama.

4 games actually.

Bayo2, Mario Kart, Hearthstone and Jazzpunk.

He didn't have to fight for Bayo 2 and didn't think Mario Kart had a chance, yet got on the list anyway.

It seemed like Jeff mostly wanted Destiny on the list to prove a point about 2014 being so bad a year that the most disappointing game of the year can still make the top 10.

...and Jeff got CoD on the list through his own admission simply because of the exoskeleton. Not only did he get it onto the list, but managed to push it to #4

Well played Jeff

Calling it now: there will be a new category next year: 2015's it's not 2014 anymore award for 11th, 12th, & 13th best games of the year.

Can I get a Vinny, Dan, Jason, Drew only Game of the Year Chat?
I cant take another year of..
Kleptick and all of his typical inherent, what it tries to do, for what it is, fundementally overused try to sound scholarly catchphrases...Alex with his Im okay with allowing that on the list goat voice stance that everyone ignores.. Gertsmann with his crabby "i dont like that game AT ALL", this is popular so I have to hate it and champion shit because its "dumb" shtick..and Brad..who was surprisingly tolerable this year.

Could you be any more insulting in the one post ?

Destiny in the top 10, Mordor GOTY and DriveClub nominated for worst game. I must have a complete opposite opinion compared to GB. Hearing Brad defend the shit out of Destiny and dismiss MK8 was infuriating.

Let's not try to judge anyone acting scholarly with this bullshit.

Fun and exhausting round of podcasts.
Thanks for all the work, its a good way of discovering some smaller gems I overlooked.

Godspeed to Patrick. I really liked the Dump Truck stuff but I have to admit that it was a bit weird to see his little beard stare at me everytime I check the GB youtube channel.

Someone's opinion on video games shouldn't infuriate you.

Sure, but, it kinda seemed like Brad was tearing down other superior games for the purpose of brute forcing Destiny onto the top ten.

At one point, Wolfenstein clearly outvoted Destiny in the discussion and yet, didn't make the list.

What part of his arguments do you agree with? What, if any do you disagree with?

I also almost gave up on Destiny pre lvl20. Post lvl20 is when the game felt good. But Brad is defending the Destiny that exists now. Destiny after all these patches:

- Level 31 gear is available in any faction at the tower. Before you needed RNG for Vault of Glass just to get level 30 gear.
- Carry 10 bounties instead of 5, less visits to the tower. Bounties offer extra rewards.
- Voice chat is accessible in Crucible and Vanguard Strikes. If you can't find people for Raids, ask the strangers you're playing with.
- legendary and exotics engrams are easier to gain than before.
- spirit blooms, iron relics, helium coils, spin metals can be purchased with vanguard or crucible marks so you don't have to do so much grinding

None of these things existed when it launched which sounds like what everyone else was playing then. . . except Brad.

Brad had to explain away the grind somehow. This is the
dark, terrible, twisted
path he chose.

Reaper of Souls was pretty much dismissed even though most of them like it. What the fuck was that? I don't even think it HAS to be on the top 10, but the way they dismissed it while Brad waged a war of attrition for fuckinf Destiny was ridiculous.

But he doesn't like Mario Kart, so it's not s superior game to him. There isn't an exact science to these lists. It's a group of people trying to come up with a fairly arbitrary list of the top 10 games of the year. As many of the guys mentioned, at some point it becomes a concession about how passionate you are about a game. This is why Jazzpunk made it despite Alex being really the only guy championing it. Same thing with Brad and Destiny.

May as well knock Drew and Vinny off as well given they admittedly played damn near nothing this year.

So all you are left with is a Dan/Jason cast...I guess Nintendo fans would be pleased.

Again, it's about the games for which they are passionate. Only really Jeff got into Reaper of Souls for any lengthy amount of time.

If you listen to the podcast though there's no way you would have known Wolfenstein was Drew's favorite game of the year.

If he had fought for it at all by mentioning it was then it might have been enough to shoot down Brad.
