Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Having listened to every bombcast in the past year, not one thing was super surprising, aside from the late Jazzpunk love.

Shovel knight getting on the list as well. I can't say i remember any of them talking about it though i watched Patrick's morning show infrequently.

He didn't, though. Brad kept dragging him back in for content and he always found it frustrating. He didn't react to it any better than Mario Party.

Sounded to me like Jeff liked the idea of putting a halfbaked game like Destiny on the list to represent what a shitty year it's been for gaming over putting a good game he didn't feel strongly about either way on there. Pretty sure he said as much at some point. Can't say I agree on either fronts, but it's their site/awards and at least they put the convoluted discussions out there.

I feel Brad is lying about the Destiny endgame by saying it's incredibly different and makes the game great. It's taking advantage of the other members of the crew who despise the game so much they didn't want to put themselves through the grind abuse that is the endgame and now have to take Brad's word on faith. And if he truly believes the endgame is great then that's a problem too.

And Jeff just wants to see the world burn and prove a point about the year being bad, to see both Destiny in most disappointing and top 10 helps that.

To understand Brad's perspective you'd need to play ten thousand hours of DotA 2. Then, after compeltely losing all perspective, you could truly understand what makes the great games great.

Not wanting to put 15-20 hours into something not fun to get something that may be fun is a completely valid argument. At that point, the endgame needs to be really fucking good (which I didn't get from Brad's arguments because he comes across as an addict with regards to that game).

I used to like Gerstmann but these podcasts have made him one of my least favourite 'journalists'.

He exaggerates, lies and lazily reviews products. He's the equivalent of a drive-by NeoGAF poster.

I'm not going to argue with what they put on their list, as it's their choice, however it is very inconsistent.
Shadow of Mordor
being their GOTY yet it didn't get best debut??

I haven't listened to the podcasts, not sure if I even will, but I saw the recaps. Their choices seemed to be the most safe ones. Most disappointing game going to Watch Dogs was funny to me though. And Destiny being no where at all in the thing struck me as odd, I figured it would have gotten some odd category winner such as "Newest timesink" or something.

Not sure if I would go that far, but I must admit that this year's GOTY podcasts kinda tainted his reputation for me.

I'm surprised Destiny made it over Diablo: RoS. Not only is Diablo a much better loot game but it seems like everyone at GB enjoyed it more than Destiny, sans Brad.

Dan really nailed it with the caneos. I think it was Jeff who said that each member was responsible for their own bits, and Dan just nailed it. If I ranked it though, Brad would be in first place because of BLACKHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE! And the leaf eating.

Dan's videos were fantastic. In spite of whatever one might think of his naivete about some things, he is a go-getter.

Destiny only made it on the list to stop Brad whining. Saying it is one if the ten best games if the year is crazy.

I guess I need to listen to the podcasts because I didn't hear Destiny mentioned in anything of the Recap videos.

The recap videos only show the winners. Destiny was number 10 on the final list. The articles and podcasts have all of the runners-up while the videos don't.

It did get Best Debut. But it shouldn't have. It's the Lord of the Fucking Rings.

Part of Brads annual tradition of bitching and moaning to get something onto the list that shouldn't be there.

Happens literally every year.

Agreed. I'm really starting to sour on him and Brad both. When Patrick and Dan applaud Smash for best multiplayer getting on the list and he says "Yay, celebrating BAD games..." Like just shut the hell up man. His disdain for seemingly all things Nintendo is getting so old he's becoming like a parody of himself. Everytime anyone says something positive about a Wii U game he lets out the most obnoxious, childish sigh and dismissive attitude. It's one thing to not be into something like Smash, but you're going to honestly sit there and call it a BAD game? Really? Yet Divekick was a top 10 of the year...

Yeah he's overly negative about Nintendo and not in a fun Yoshi ranting kind of way. Fine if he genuinely think they are terrible etc but he's doesn't even try to be funny about it half the time.

Bayonetta 2 was pretty high on his personal list this year and I think he enjoyed the 3d world and galaxy mario games as well. You can be fond of nintendo and not like smash or mario kart.

Yeah, I think he's open to liking Nintendo games, but the sheer aesthetic clearly isn't for him.

Still, despite Bayonetta being high on his list you'd be hard pressed to find much footage of him actually praising the game. He just isn't like that, he isn't a gushy person (unless he's reminiscing about older games). Even Call of Duty, while he talked about positively, it was always with the tinge of surprise that he's talking about a CoD game. He rarely ever full on gushed about it the same way the others can.

GB is just like a sitcom. Everyone starts out with their own grounded quirks and as the seasons go on, each character plays more and more into the things that audiences like them for (Joey in Friends, everyone in Seinfeld) until they become caricatures of their former selves. I've followed them for a long time so it's pretty clear to me that Jeff is just playing it up to get laughs but I can see how people get put off by it.

If you don't like a game, that makes it a bad game. What do you want him to say? "I can't stand Smash brothers and have no interest in playing it...but it's a good game!" That's how everyone's subjectivity works. It's just that people find a reason for backlash when that opinion is targeted at a popular title or something they like.

Meh, if he doesn't like Smash, he doesn't like Smash. I think he understands why people like it but those games don't click with him and I think anyone who's been listening to the bombcast for any length of time knows that so expecting him to gush over the Smash games is a little silly at this point.

You don't need to play a game to judge its aesthetic.

Though, obviously this has to do with Drawn to Death, and GB might have judged a bit more than the aesthetic back when they talked about it.

IIRC they really bashed the art style, but it's a very divisive art style. I personally like it but I can see where it's going to turn a lot of people off.

I still like Jeff but it's pretty clear he doesn't really like games all that much anymore, despite being incredibly knowledgeable about them. I remember on a podcast shortly after Ryan Davis passed last year he said he and Ryan had been thinking of getting out this "Dumb video game shit" and move onto something else which I forget what he said it was.

Would be awesome if Jaffe would just stop talking. This guy is so insufferable. God forbid someone not like your game. There are plenty of people who are interested in it so focus on those people instead of whining about how the GB guys didn't like it.

They hated how it looked, the gameplay and all that.

Well, I can see where they're coming from. The art style doesn't really help it in trying to be...a competitive shooter. And the gameplay...looks average atleast. Maybe the simplicity makes it fun, but I'm not sold on it. He should stick to Twisted Metal.

Sunset gettin robbed.

I'm really curious to try out Nidhog and The Fall whenever they come to consoles.

Destiny can suck it.

He said many times if he didn't like doing what he does he'd stop. Just because he dislikes games others love doesn't mean he hates everything. I disagree with a lot of his opinions but he's entitled to them. What I don't understand is why people take such great offense to what he thinks.

Because his thinking usually steps on their toes since they like the thing he doesn't like :p
