Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

But how could you just ignore the personal attack is so clearly the cause of the tweet, and not the actual criticism? Again, if it was just "I don't like the look of this game for 'x' reasons", then you honestly believe Jaffe would have made that tweet? I just don't think anyone believes that. Yes, he doesn't outright say "I'm mad at giantbomb for attacking me", but come on man, you know that's what caused the tweet. If you watched the video he linked to, half of it is about the chef calling out the food critic for making ad hominem's about him being needy and other accusations about his character. So how can anyone say jaffe's tweet is nothing more than "oh he can't take criticism, so salty" or what other internet bullshit phrases people spew. It's so obviously not just about "he can't take negative criticism about his game."

Because all the tweet says is don't shit on my unreleased game. If there's anything more or less to it than that then he should say it.. its that simple. Saying one thing when you really mean something else entirely is the very definition of bullshit. Especially when you're a guy that has a history of lashing out at negative press.

Finishing up the final podcast. Great listen. I'll always appreciate GB putting out this stuff in full.

I think Brad getting
a game as boring as
Destiny onto the top 10 may be his most impressive GOTY feat yet on Giant Bomb. And it didn't seem like any of the other guys enjoyed it much so I was certain it'd get shot down.

Also, I need to play Jazzpunk.

I picked up Jazzpunk, The Fall, and Naissance thanks to these podcasts. I finished up Jazzpunk and, frankly, I think I'm far more baffled by it making the top ten than Destiny. Its neat but I found most of the humor lame and it would probably be a better game if they removed all the game parts of it, especially in the second half.

Probably will be looked back on as the moment GB jumped the shark, along with Klepek leaving.

The whole "angry rants!" sector of games journalism is so overplayed and crowded these days, it's sad to see GB leaning heavily into it.

I think we're being a bit over dramatic here. If they jumped the shark, that would have happened in 2011 with that ridiculous Skyrim/ SR3 debate.

Just finished listening to the last GOTY podcast and goddamn. Not sure if I should feel disgusted that Brad managed to get Destiny on the list or be impressed. Muthafuckin wizard he is. Kinda sad that Divinity was kicked off, Patrick should have least one last victory before he goes off doing his thing... and its a damn good game as well.

I had the exact same feeling about Jazzpunk, the humor wasn't as great as Alex said and the game is not bad, but not top 10 material even less at 8.

I think the troubling thing for me is Gerstmann used to be a highly-respected guy on both the journo and dev sides of the industry, but lately he (and by extension all of GB) is being openly mocked by people from both sides. Not something I'm used to seeing, and I don't think it's a good sign.

Personally, it just seems like Jeff is tired/bitter. The only time he actually seems to get excited when he goes on a rant or tears a game a new asshole. That's not surprising; it's a lot easier to get angry about something then it is to stick your neck out and expose yourself to criticism by being passionate about something.

There's something about it that's extra fatiguing this year. Especially with Patrick leaving. I've found myself openly thinking "why listen to these guys talk about video games" and I never really used to do that. Maybe it's just me.

I really want to keep watching stuff with Vinny in it, but that isn't super common nowadays.

Edit: but I've been listening since 2008 or 9 (whenever they started). It's likely I'm just burnt-out. Their opinions aren't often particularly exciting or insightful anymore, probably because they're very predictable to me after (literally) hundreds of hours.

Wait, who is openly mocking Jeff Gerstmann?

Huh?

People have complained about Jeff for more than a decade. There's the infamous 8.8 review, of course, but also Emcee located a bunch of old usenet (?) messages complaining about his biases/reviews/opinions.

Tone is different now. Hard to explain. I know a lot of people who don't like Jeff, or his opinions, but respect him. Now it seems the respect is fading.

More often than not, when they use "bad game" they are speaking in relative terms. Alas, Jeff often says, in both comedic and serious tone, that x is a bad game while other member is saying that he is enjoying the game a loot.

I mean being a critic should mean that you actually criticize games right? Jeff can be a very articulate dude when he wants to be. So can Patrick. As a critic, seeing a small snippet of gameplay, and automatically writing it off and criticizing the game creator in the process? There's quite a difference between "man this looks bad" which I think Jaffe's game did and "oh he's an old guy trying to be young". Yeah that's just plain lazy.

If they're not going to actually criticize games legitimately (and their game reviews, as sparse as they are, say they still want to do so), then don't bother doing at all. Hiding behind, well it's a bad game for them, is ultimately irrelevant. Why is a bad game for them? Oh cool, you hate how Driveclub controls and how spare the content is? Awesome those are good reasons and no one can really gripe about it even if they feel differently. Don't do the lazy way out and not spell out your reasons for hating a game. GB is liked because they are genuine. Be genuine but don't be lazy!

And I'd say with few exceptions, actually play the game before shitting all over the game creator.

Got some names of these industry people, or is this the circle of people you interact with? Because your reading of the situation comes off kind of crazy.

Theres also these videos someone dug up the last time this topic came up, where Jeff reveals his thoughts on some of the PS1 classics. Spoiler:
He hates everything.

Haha Alex.

"I think hey, I should play this. But then I realize, that I hate this."

Edit-And the way Jeff hates on Tomb Raider in juxtaposition with the other person saying they love it! It's his schtick. Anyone who takes him seriously should check themselves.

So happy to be a giant bomb premium subscriber. Love these guys. I love that Jazz opener and close to the podcasts. Did you guys ever figure out who wrote those songs? They are great.

From the comments field (written by Brad) in the MP3 files:

Andrew Allen made that intro music! And the outro music! Go look Andrew up (@keyswithsoul) at keyswithsoul.com. Do it!

Hahaha really? Could you please elaborate on who are these people?

By the Goty top10, the E3 night GB livestreams and others things I would have sworn more and more people are participating in GB!

Jeez I was fooled all along! It seems no one takes GB seriously then!

I didn't get Jazzpunk, its "humor" was really not for me. Seems weird for weirdness sakes, instead of clever. Naissance has no controller support, and unwittingly returned me to the beginning area after 20 minutes of progress. What.

The Fall is the only one of the "small/overlooked" games they mentioned that is actually good.

One of these days, Driveclub fans will make Jeff sorry for saying all those mean things about the game

With all the heel turns, double crosses, and plot twists, giant bomb GOTY feels like an episode of wrestling or Game of Thrones.

Finished listening to all the GOTY podcasts (never listened through all of them for a specific year before). The podcasts balance that fine line of being dumb, pointless and very entertaining. Great to have something to listen to during the holidays when all other podcasts seem to take breaks though.

The worst part about all of the GOTY deliberations is not the Destiny top 10, but it's the way that fucking patrick and brad pronounce Danganronpa.

They should both leave GB for that shit.

Overreaction much?

Oh no they said a word wrong, let me rip my dick off in anger!

Destiny being in the top 10 was the least surprising thing ever. You don't have one guy profess his fealty to it for weeks on end without it leaving a mark.

I've only finished day one at this point, but I'm kind of fucking amazed that Driveclub literally doesn't get mentioned at all during the "best looking" category, despite the fact that holy shit does that game look good.

I mean, I don't own, so I can't defend whether it's a great game or not, but having seen footage, it strikes me as totally weird that not one of them bothered to bring it up.

2015 top 10. Which nintendo game will end up on there, if any?

yoshi
kirby
zelda (70% sure this is gonna get delayed to 2016)
xenoblade x (no one on staff is gonna play this!)
splatoon

Just Zelda. Even if Splatoon turns out being the bees knees, I don't see Jeff or Brad letting more then 1 Nintedo game on the list.

Splatoon's the only one Jeff and Brad will not instantly knock off the list for being derivative and tired.

Xenoblade will probably get the same treatment DAI did this year. A few of them will play it, and none of them will get into it enough to argue for it, even if it's largely loved by the audience its meant for.

With Patrick leaving, I can't help but once more hope they hire someone that might actually like RPGs.

With all the heel turns, double crosses, and plot twists, giant bomb GOTY feels like an episode of wrestling or Game of Thrones.

It hasn't been the same the last 2 or 3 GOTY's as it was before. Those first 4 or 5 ones were all super emotionally charged, and people were fighting it out for everything. To the point where you could hear the anger in people's voice. The last few years people are just like "I like this, but I'm not going to fight for it". Even when there are two or three people who like a game for a category, they aren't fighting for it like they used to. Dan and Brad did it for Mario Kart and Destiny for the best game, but that was pretty much it.

Eh, I like that some of the guys on Giantbomb can be cut and dry, I actually watch and listen to GB because I find their personalities humourous. Its the fact they just sort of do and say what they want and even wear some of their bias on their sleeve that sets them a part for me. They arent pretending to be 'real' journalist like many other sites that are trying to pass themselves off as an authority figures on the inside of the industry.

I've heard Jeff go off plenty to times about a game being shit without ever really articulating his reason why, its like a response of 'it's shit, I didnt like it, I dont want to hear anything more about it, just get it the fuck out of here.' Watching him lose his shit like that makes me laugh, especially when everyone wanted to talk about Yoshi and he really flew off the deep end.

Giantbomb is more entertainment and parody to me. They do an awards show because its sort lf the norm but I dont out much thought into it. I think some of you guys just take the site way to seriously. Its basically a bunch of guys that play games and do stupid stuff for shits and giggles. It at least comes across entirely natural and genuine rather than all these sites with this really forced sort of psuedo intellectual approach that ends up coming off with the impression that the authors have some delusions of grandeur that their opinion is somehow worth more than that of anyone else.

The only people that seem to take issue with Jeff are the ones that get really butthurt that he doesnt toe the line about their latest favourite game. Everything from 'yeh well he's just shit at those sort of games anyway' arguments to him just saying what he thinks.

Dont forget also these guys play a lot of games, so they are probably more jaded and less likely to forgive a game they feel is a waste of their time or something they feel just doesnt do anything for them. I'm at the same point myself, unless a game is pretty remarkable it tends to fall into the 'cant be fucked' pile for me.

I dont want to go back and find the debate but someone remind me why Hearthstone is not a new game/debut but something like Middle Earth is?
What was Gestmanns reasoning with that?

Something along the lines (weak argument also) that Hearthstone is just a card game based on WOW and Warcraft. It isn't a new world or a spin off of the original lore. It was a really bad argument tbh.

His argument was they could include games based on properties outside of games like lotr, Alien etc but not if it was based on a game franchise.

Zelda probably. However, if it's the best game ever it still won't be no.1 because it's a Nintendo game in a Giant Bomb GOTY list.

Xenoblade is too long and too much a JRPG for any of them to play to completion.
