Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

2015 top 10. Which nintendo game will end up on there, if any?

zelda (70% sure this is gonna get delayed to 2016)
xenoblade x (no one on staff is gonna play this!)
splatoon

I see Zelda tbh

Splatoon if it actually turns to be good as the previews seems to indicate

I dont want to go back and find the debate but someone remind me why Hearthstone is not a new game/debut but something like Middle Earth is?
What was Gestmanns reasoning with that?

The reasoning was its only a debut for the purposes of the award if its not based on an existing video game franchise.

Since Hearthstone is based on Warcraft, it's disqualified. But since Middle Earth was based on (obviously) Tolkien lore, rather than any pre-existing Tolkien inspired video game, it's eligible.

So yeah, the reasoning is technically sound, though I will say kind of flawed if you think about it in the meta sense; Warcraft as a franchise is heavily based on Tolkien anyway (as most Western fantasy is), but somehow the game based on the Tolkien is considered more of a debut.

Honestly I think the "Best Debut" category needs to go altogether. What purpose does it honestly serve the awards at this point? Every time they've done it, they've awarded it to the game they go on to give Game of the Year to anyway (TLOU, Shadow of Mordor), so you have to question the value in spending time giving what is basically a GOTY award with an asterisk.

Best Debut was flawed. If they had called it best new IP it would have made much more sense and been a better category. a LOTR games shouldn't have even been considered.

I really, really hope Zelda turns out well, I wasn't super-hot on Link Between Worlds, and the talk about this one being 'open world' makes me think it's going to take cues from it.

Though I recall the crew loving Link Between Worlds, so maybe that will help it next year.

Jeff will veto Yoshi and there's no Patrick, so that leaves Alex and he won't fight for it.
Alex is the only one who would really promote Kirby without Patrick there.
If Zelda comes out and is good, it... might end up somewhere.
Xenoblade is a JRPG with MMO-like mechanics, so nobody will touch it.
Splatoon might stand a chance.
Mario Maker will live or die based purely on whether it meets the 100% exact idea of it that Jeff single handedly dreamed up.
Star Fox is going to be a downloadable experimental (episodic?) thing so almost definitely not.
Without Patrick, absolutely nobody will touch Codename STEAM.
Without Patrick, absolutely nobody will touch Majora's Mask 3D and Jeff and Brad will get whiny if it's even barely mentioned for any category.

Aw man, it hadn't even occurred to me that the release of Majora's Mask 3D will probably lead to more podcasts full of Jeff and Brad's blasphemous opinions on the game.

You're forgeting Dan who would fight for those Nintendo games.

Also, in Jeff's defense, what he mainly wants out of Mario Maker is the ability to remake 1:1 the levels of the games from which Mario Maker takes its graphics and gameplay. To me, that is a very sane thing to ask, and I would be very disappointed if we can't do that.

I know, but from the very start it's seemed obvious that Nintendo wants the game to have a uniform set of Mario physics/handling to keep things simple across tilesets, so if there's no option in the final game for physics based on the individual games, I can see Jeff getting so hung up on it he poopoos the whole thing, even if they nail the rest of the customization/level sharing stuff.

Giant Bomb being down on a Nintendo game really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone at this point. You should just be numb to it after all these years of being told that Yoshi's Island, Majora's Mask, Donkey Kong Country, Super Smash Bros, Metroid Prime, etc, etc, are bad games. Jeff is clearly a monster, it's part of his charm.

Jeff still loves games, just listen to him talking about Niddhog, he was suuuuper positive about it

Exactly.

People seem to be glossing over that. Jeff was super positive about Nidhogg and Luftrausers, and as much as people like to ignore that Call of Duty is a perfectly eligible and legitimate videogame, he's enjoying the hell out of playing that and fought for its inclusion on these lists.

Giant Bomb being a "personality" driven website is great for the content they put out, but it doesn't half create a weird sense of expectation on behalf of some of the listeners. It's almost like some people feel genuinely affronted by what games Jeff has an opinion on. DriveClub is my number 2 favorite game of 2014, a game which Jeff openly describes as "bad". I don't think Jeff is jaded or hates games because of it.

To be honest, I can't help but feel that Dan still feels like 'the new guy' and is kinda holding himself back. I can see him fighting for those kind of titles when he feels much more comfy, but I think next year's GB list will pretty much empty Nintendo-wise; I can see Zelda on there, but that's it.

It is not only sane but the same I am hoping for.

I think Phantom Pain will do really well anyway. Patrick was the only person who seemed down on Ground Zeroes for plot reasons, the rest of the crew seemed really positive about it.

You must have missed Jeff's rant on the 3/25/14 podcast.

EDIT: Starting at 1:19:36

"As someone who has just kinda come to appreciate the weirdness of Metal Gear story stuff I feel like there's not enough of that and what is there has actually like turned bad. Weird in a very poorly written like, why would you go this route with this charater? Like some of the implications about with Paz and how they handle that stuff I think is disgusting. Seeing Ground Zeroes and then hearing Kojima or seeing Kojima talking about that Quiet character like it's going to be this nuanced 'Oh you're going to really regret what you're saying about this character when you see this story' it's like this is how you handled this other stuff. You might be garbage. You might be a real monster Kojima, I don't know. That stuff is fucking sick."

He's actually way harsher than I ever heard Patrick being.

I loved how the Ubi template was on their please stop list and then Brad's in there arguing "but it's only the second Far Cry in a row like this!"

That Destiny argument was amazing. Brad can tell his grandkids about that one.

FarCry 4 is a great game even if it follows that template. But if there's a FarCry 5 like that, I'm thinking people will begin to tire of it.

they disqualified vibry for being from a game from long ago even though this was the first time it was released in the US.

Technically danganronpa should have been disqualified from all of it's categories(runner up for story, in the discussion for character) for the same reasons. Bravely Default as well.

It's all inconsistent (which is fine, just noting)

You're forgetting Dan.

MM maybe, and even then it's going to be a rerelease so they're not going to count it for most categories. I dont remember hearing him say anything about FE, I'm not sure STEAM will get any attention from him either

Through all the podcasts the thing that bummed me out the most was the slander that was lobbed at Towerfall. I think someone called it slow. This is madness. I can, however, totally understand liking Samurai Gunn over it even though I think they are both amazing games.

At least they talked some good stuff about Nidhogg and Sportsfriends.

I don't think anyone on the crew thinks the way Ground Zeroes ends was okay. Dan seems to just take the vileness of it all and hopes that it'll lead to something more cohesive in MGS5, which if Kojima was known for doing as such, I would probably guess as much as well. But Kojima didn't earn that ending. It was a cheap shock that trivializes a lot of serious issues for the sole purpose of angering the player.

Ground Zeroes and all the marketing swirling around MGS5 right now makes me not want to play MGS5. I feel like it's Kojima trying to go grim dark as he closes in on the death of big boss and he simply doesn't know how.

Dan fought for smash and Mk 8, without him neither would been in the runner up group. Dan is as stubborn as brad, I'm his whole mk8 defense was it fun.

What game do you expect to be AAA, from well-known and otherwise talented developers, but kind of shitty

Batman has a good chance at that

I predict that if Zelda U does come out next year, which I doubt it will, it will be the game that makes the entire crew complain and lament about the lack of the tried and true Zelda formula, and Zelda ALBW becomes 2015's 2014 GOTY.

I thought about this, but I don't remember Brad being that into the Arkham games as the others so even if Knight is disappointing I don't see him loving it.

Spot on with Jeff on Mario maker lol. Actually spot on with everything

I don't know the point about arguing potential 2015 GOTYs when The Witcher 3 is going to sweep all that shit up itself.

Witcher 1 was meh, decent game with balancing issues and horrible amount of backtracking. Witcher 2 was ok, nothing mind blowing. I don't see it sweeping anything.

The discussion of Luftrausers' style with not even a mention that it might be insensitive and problematic for some people due to it's similarity to Nazi styling was a bummer.

Not saying it shouldn't have been on the list, or it should have been a 10 minute discussion, just a simple mention that some people did find it questionable. Kinda similar to the Ground Zeroes situation.

It isn't all dark.
