Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Assholes.

You're supposed to say almost sold 20 million. Does Microsoft teach you nothing?
Many users are saying that. Shipped should be pretty much at 20 million now. I think they should play hardball.

MS said there are approaching 10 million units shipped. And the media just went bonkers saying X1 is almost caught up now!?

The fook is this? Last known sell-through for X1 was like 6 million lol?

In celebration of this news,

Sony trying to the good news out in front of a potentially underwhelming NPD month?

Who knows? Both companies are being weird with their PR lately. For Nov NPD I expected MS to shout from the hills that they had won the month. Instead their PR was so subdued that you almost would have thought they'd lost again...

Damn. Those are some impressive numbers. Good for Sony.

A $400 hypebox with barely any games fueled on the hopes and dreams of millions?

Wunderbar, indeed.

Almost 20m without games like The Order, Bloodborne, No Man's Sky, or Uncharted 4 available on the system yet. Knack's impact is too real

That's somewhat surprising since i don't consider the gaming library to be very good at the moment. Though it does beat what Xbox has to offer and Wii U:s abysmal branding(and marketing), so far.

I don't think Xbone will reach 50 million though, and I also predict the PS4 will pass the 100m mark when all is said and done, and by that I mean after PS5 launches.

Ah, have to agree to disagree tho, I think MS will do enough to push it to around 50m when all is said and done. Sitting at 10 - 12m shipped after 1 years isn't bad.

Even if you believe the PS4 had no games, which is of course idiotic, than you'd have to look at this years upcoming lineup and realize Sony is about to curb stomp the competition.

PS4 is tracking way ahead of PS2. I don't think it'll get to 155m, but they'd need to fuck up badly to not go over 100m sold.

I can't see the XB1 selling 50m at all. There's only real interest for it in the USA and that's significantly muted compared to the interest that was in the 360. And before you say "but the 360 was a slow starter", Xbox is now an established brand. It should be flying out of the gates like the PS4 or the Wii.

Neither system is getting close to 100m without dropping under $150.

All hail Europe

Yep. The PS4 sold 18.5 million consoles without having great games. The success has nothing to do with great games.
/s

i'm gonna be honest with this one, most of the success is coming from people just want to upgrade. ps4 has great games though, it's just they are available on every console.

That's even higher then what I was predicting. Wow.

I actually almost created a new thread to ask this the other day but I figured I would wait for NPD data. But since this is posted, maybe I should just ask now. For the sake of comparison, what is the most recent estimate for worldwide XBO sales?

That's very very very unlikely. For 40 mil at the end of this year, they'll have to sell 21.5 mil this year which 50% more than last year sales (14.3 mil).

Without a price cut this fall (or even summer) I don't see them being able to sell 40mill this year.

That said well done to Sony for 18.5mill

I think it's different, in this case: there's Sony CES Conference soon, and they will probably talk about PlayStation as well.

Actually, I was expecting the announcement to be made there, honestly.

For whatever reason, they felt the need in the UK. The PS4 bundles on offer put some of the X1 bundles to shame.

Tesco are currently selling a standalone PS4 for 329.99, which equates to $501USD.

They have a huge amount of space to discount in pretty much every market outside the US and still take profit I reckon.

Also - I think Fergal has some uber-bonus scheme if he can maintain market lead in the UK so he's ON that shit.

OT: 1.423mn units per month since launch. FWIW the PS4 outsold the iPad in year one.

I understand the sentiment, and my PS4 doesn't see much usage these days, either, but it's already got a pretty amazing library if you don't own a PC.

They should have dropped the price just a bit. They would have hit 20 mil and that looks like a much better number.

Imagine how many will sell when there's actually more than a few worthwhile games on the system.
I kid.

Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to three years from now when this thing will have a crazy high install base and when developers will really put the system through its paces. It's a good time to like video games.

Sure. It has tons of multiplats. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have great games. It does. It even has some pretty solid first party titles. The point is that the "no games" narrative is tired and stupid.
