Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

slightly disappointing numbers since they didn't hit 20m but they still did great. not the best ever but these numbers show a very healthy market.

People honestly thought they'd hit 20 million? Maybe they shipped 20 million.

Did it really sell that many worldwide? I know it sold over 100 million, but I didn't know it went that far.
PS2 had long-legs after PS3 was released. GOW2 released at the end of PS2's life, and many yearly titles remained on the platform. It truly was SNES reborn under a different company. Had a ton of great games across genres.

If PS4 is 3/4 as good as PS2 in variety and bringing Japanese development back to the spotlight I will be a happy camper.

I'm dualy shocked. 18.5 million is a pretty impressive number.

I wonder how the others are standing WW now, as well as what this means for any price drops/etc.

I remember the time people were looking at the terrible 1st year WiiU sales and predicting PS4 (and Xbone) were gonna tank so bad, that consoles were dead and it was either mobile , handheld or PC only. Like Nintendo consoles are good ways to see how the market will play out....hehe.

I never understood that at all. It was like those people were ignoring what made the Wii U an unattractive product -- even in comparison to the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

At this point, I just want Japan to make somewhat of a comeback. We will never get that 150 million PS2 era again, but I at least want to see JRPG's, Action titles, and fighters make somewhat of a comeback and something besides FF/DQ sell over a million copies on consoles.

i think everyone is waiting for the big names to boost the ps4 in japan so they can have a larger userbase, maybe they fear the game is going to bomb if it's ps4 only. well, we have disgaea 5, but it's not gonna move hardware

Remember when people thought there was no way they'd get 15 million sold by the end of the year?

I was one of those people.

Insanely impressive. So much for consoles dying. They just have to be, you know, appealing.

I know that, being 1st gives you an advantage sales wise, it's just what if Sony went for the jugular right off the bat
Shit would be unreal to see
I'm not sure it would have done anything. If Ps4 price-dropped to match X1, I think both just would have sold very well, wouldn't have hindered X1 sales boost at all IMO.

There is a loyal fanbase for Xbox in U.S. It sold like double what PS3 did over here.

Jesus Fuck. They've blown way past my expectations. I predicted 15 mill sold by end of 2014. We're 5 days into 2015 and they're close to 20 mill.

PS4 is unstoppable at this point. Congrats to Sony.

lol at some calling these numbers disappointing, weren't most here predicting 16mil by the end of 2014?

Seriously.

I suspect that Japanese press releasee doesn't deal with the whole shipped/sold fiasco that we go through whenever Microsoft make a thread.

Sony had shipped 13.5m in November, so I think it is quite unlikely they have sold another 6 million units since.

sweet Mary's bush that's alot... Well all this dick measuring creates competition which is only good for the consumer, right?

For whatever reason, they felt the need in the UK. The PS4 bundles on offer put some of the X1 bundles to shame.

The really aggressive UK bundles seemed to vary greatly by retailer so far as I noted so they were probably retailer driven using popularity of PS4 to draw consumers to their store/site vs others. Either that or Sony should consider swapping SECA and UK staff for a bit during holiday trading.

Damn.... I wonder what the numbers will be like after Bloodborne is released. A lot of people consider that game as the final push for old-gen users to new-gen consoles (PS4 in this case)

Arent these numbers "the best ever" by a very large margin for the 1th year of a console though?

Why are you so confident about 18.5 are sold to consumers and not shipped. How can sony track it in the right way?

Consoles connected to internet? Retailer reports?

I think both 3 give always shipped numbers and not sold.

Wait, if they sold 4 mil during holidays and had only reached 13.5m in Nov, where did the other 1 mil come from?

I was all set up to wait for next year and my wife surprised me for Christmas. Awesome console, with an incredible future.

Consoles really benefit from the network effect.

Wii had shipped 20.14m by Jan 2008. PS4 should be close to that shipped.

Wii was heavily supply costrained, though. If it had bigger shipments, it would've done quite better. PS4 isn't in that situation (I know it has been mentioned Europe could have suffered shortages problems, but Wii was suffering WW). Still, even if it's now behind the Wii, this is a very good result, hardware wise.

Do we have a good recap of tie-ratios for consoles at the same time after the release?
