Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

That's very very very unlikely. For 40 mil at the end of this year, they'll have to sell 21.5 mil this year which 50% more than last year sales (14.3 mil).

I think it's possible actually. This is the year where they release the "big hits" so to speak. If they also drop the price then I could see it hitting 40 mil in the next 12 months.

But then again, dropping the price with such a great momentum is not a wise thing to do. So who knows.

Hot damn.

The last time we had a sold through figure was mid august around Gamescom at 10 million. Fast forward one quarter and we get over 8 million more sold.

Godstation 4.

Who knows? Both companies are being weird with their PR lately. For Nov NPD I expected MS to shout from the hills that they had won the month. Instead their PR was so subdued that you almost would have thought they'd lost again...
They gave away a free kidney with every X1. it was really nothing to celebrate...They were forced to close the gap somewhat through crazy promotions and taking losses, not ideal or cause for a party. MS is dumb rich, but still, it's about that profit.

So is the idea here that over half of people with a PS4 do not have PlayStation Plus? I'm sorry but I just don't believe that.

If that sounds right to someone, by all means correct me on this.

They should have dropped the price just a bit. They would have hit 20 mil and that looks like a much better number.

They will hit 20 million at 399$ in no time. Why would they lose money just to hit that arbitrary number a few months earlier?

A $400 hypebox with barely any games fueled on the hopes and dreams of millions?

Wunderbar, indeed.

i'm starting to think it's possible that Sony may sell 100 million PS4 at the current price in the next 4 years without needing to drop the price

Really can't believe this thing is selling so well lol. How? Don't get me wrong, I have one and gifted another to a friend but goddamn. Nearing 20 million in a little over a year?? Congrats, Sony.

Wouldn't be surprised. If I recall, Xbox Live Gold subscribers don't even hit half of the install base.

It's a beast everywhere!

Amazing Numbers, Sony! Cannot wait for these 1st party exclusives taking advantage of PS4's extra horsepower under its hood. 2015 is gonna be great for PS4 owners!

It's not a beast in Japan. EU/North America are the big drivers for the PS4 right now.

Great numbers for Sony.

Thank god we can bury the "consoles are dead" crowd now. This will probably be a banner generation for console install bases.

Ah, have to agree to disagree tho, I think MS will do enough to push it to around 50m when all is said and done. Sitting at 10 - 12m shipped after 1 years isn't bad.

There is nothing to agree or disagree about. These are sales, hard numbers. We are just predicting. sooner or later one of us will be right and the other wrong. I hope you are right though :P

i'm gonna be honest with this one, most of the success is coming from people just want to upgrade. ps4 has great games though, it's just they are available on every console.

That's a non argument though. After all you still need a console to play multiplattform titles, so why not playing them on the fastest console in the best possible looking form on consoles?

If I take this numbers at face value it shows that offline gaming is not dead yet and a lot of people don't care for all the implemented social stuff.

How does it compare to the Wii?

Someone find that chart.

Wii shipment by December was 20.13 million. It's already been posted. We don't have Wii sold to consumers estimates, although it is generally accepted they are very close to the shipments due to the constant sell-out (probably over 19 million).

PS4 shipment is likely between 19 and 20 million. We'll know PS4's number around Feb 5.

Thank god we can bury the "consoles are dead" crowd now. This will probably be a banner generation for condole install bases.

If we suppose Wii never existed, we can say that. Otherwise, not that much. Nothing against PS4, which will easily sell 80 millions when the gen is done, and it has a chance of selling 100 millions.

So from late October to now it sold 5m units (impressive). XB1 must have put up a good fight then, it's gonna be around 2.3 - 2.8m US alone, UK was like 500k at least as well.

%!"£ me! That's one impressive number! Never imagined it would perform this well. Many congrats Sony. Now for the rest of the business!

I'd guess that shipments are just below 20M then, as if they had surpassed I'd have thought that would be the better number to announce.

50%+ attach rate for PS+ seems like a solid money maker. Curious if it has had any/will have any impact on tie ratio current or long term.

I suspect that Japanese press releasee doesn't deal with the whole shipped/sold fiasco that we go through whenever Microsoft make a thread.

Sony had shipped 13.5m in November, so I think it is quite unlikely they have sold another 6 million units since.

That's the shipment number from the end of September. The sell-through was lower than that figure. And SCE did sell-through another 6 million units worldwide in the last 3 months to give you an idea of where that sell-through figure was sitting.

Do you even spin?
No one even tries anymore. I'm always rounding numbers. It's a fact of life. I was taught this when I was, like, six years old or something. So if you round to the nearest ten, is it really a lie? They can outright lie about software numbers when there is no software to sell, but they can't do this because it'd be going too far.
