Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

I can't see the XB1 selling 50m at all. There's only real interest for it in the USA and that's significantly muted compared to the interest that was in the 360. And before you say "but the 360 was a slow starter", Xbox is now an established brand. It should be flying out of the gates like the PS4 or the Wii.

I don't think Xbone will reach 50 million though, and I also predict the PS4 will pass the 100m mark when all is said and done, and by that I mean after PS5 launches.

These. There's no way that Xbox One will reach 50 million worldwide at all. I doubt that they'll get even close to 47+ million in the U.S. alone at all like with the Xbox 360, & that took them about 9 years to do so.

A $400 hypebox with barely any games fueled on the hopes and dreams of millions?

Wunderbar, indeed.

As opposed to the console in which Microsoft had to rely on price cuts & bundles just to get people to pay attention to the thing? Someone's being very salty.

Just to think their PR was essentially "lets not shoot ourselves in the foot out the gate". Treating your customers with respect goes a lot further than most of the MBA type like to think.

I think a large part of PS4's success is down to timeliness and simply looking like the best thing on the market to the casual observer- something Sony is and always has been very, very good at. Gamers were gagging for a new generation years ago, and we're seeing not only Sony reaping that benefit, but also capitalising on their 'good guy' image in the wake of MS' mistakes, and also going in hard with lame propaganda in the form of their 'for the gamers' campaign, which seems to be working despite sluggish (to date) efforts regarding software and firmware. In fact, despite making me a great console, it really doesn't feel like Sony's done a lot else on the gaming front to deserve these sales. But like I said, it is a great console, and one with a no doubt great future.

Its easy to dismiss what Sony has done as the "they took the easy way out" and act like they are being "arrogant" again not doing anything out for the "gamers" after doing so well. I would say personally that 2014 although not having huge AAA games, it still had very sold line up. Sony still offers the most robust line up including tons of exiting Indie titles, Free2Play (no PS+ req. for this - its great but its Sony so who cares right?), slew of 1st Party and 3rd Party support, Morpheus VR coming in the near future, FW abilities like Share Play which is crazy. Yea Sony really has nothing to show here. I mean MS must have all that covered and then some, right for you to not be impressed??

Not sure why you are salty about the Ad campaign. Its just a campaign. You are taking it "literally" just to justify your hatred on it. "oh wow if its for the players, why cant it do x feature. Sony you fail I should sue you". Its just like a slogan for them. Like McDonalds' "Im lovin' it". Gimme a break.

Yeah, I'm trying to imagine a 2016 with a potential GT7, TLOU2, GOW4, new Guerillia Game, new Media Molecule game and new David Cage game? Could be huge if you ask me.

I think in 2016, PS4 should be $299 or less. That alone is worthy note to move units and attract more potential buyers on the fence.

Holy shit, so uh... What happened to that "console gaming is dead" stuff when the Wii U was flopping?

I think Nintendo hardcore fans just were dismayed at what they were seeing and in order to bring that sad reality to a "comfortable" level of acceptance, they just say "LOL PS4/Xbone gonna do the same so whatevs. Consoles are dead in general, not Nintendo's fault! Wii was the last 'hurrah!' for gaming Right guys? *tear* ".

I find it amusing how your default assumption was a Microsoft fanboy and not a Nintendo fanboy

either way, dude wasn't serious lol

Absolutely not. And selling 10 million with what software? everything significant is already out.

Nintendo software continues to sell throughout the lifespan of a system. Many people want to play Mk8 or Smash or what have you, but that $300 (when an X1 or ps4 are only $50-100 more) is too high a price of entry.

This is what nintendo fans ACTUALLY BELIEVE

edit: perhaps I've been too dismissive. Outside of launch, the WiiU has sold somewhere around 3.5 million units in about a year and a half, much of that time with no competition at all. Nearly every high profile franchise nintendo has outside of Zelda and Metroid has launched during that time period and nothing has moved units.

There is absolutely nothing that will sell 13-14 million additional wii U's. that ship has sailed. it will be lucky to hit 10 million at this rate.

You can't be serious -_-

He's not wrong in regards to me. I bought into the WIi craze when I was in high school still and spent $250 of saved up money on it. Other than 2 or 3 fantastic Nintendo games a year, I absolutely felt massive buyer's remorse for not saving up a bit more and getting a 360, especially when 2007 rolled around (got one in late 2007 thank God).

Also, that lack of HD support wasn't a big deal at first but as time passed and more people got HDTVs, it started to sting.

Wii-U has already peaked. I'm no analyst, but you can probably predict where the console LTD will end up at this point, just from the data on-hand. As you said earlier, all the significant titles are out, and they didn't do enough. 15 million was my guess for the ceiling of the LTD, and I think it's still a good guess.

Most people don't buy game consoles for exclusives.

Nope, they don't. 3rd party games are what the majority of people are buying, and they are what seem to be selling these consoles.

Would the installed base be sufficient by the end of this year for a sustainable Morpheus launch?

Maybe they'll go for a $499 PS4+Morpheus+Summer Lesson No Man's Sky - Brack Friday Bunduru?

I'm not bashing Nintendo, I'm "bashing" the Wii. The two consoles were sold on two completely different terms and everyone I knew had their Wiis in a closet a year after owning it. Obviously the Nintendo faithful are going to enjoy it, but that wasn't the majority of the consumer base.

Nothing I'm saying is controversial btw, yet I was quoted three times already.

Fair enough. I just know plenty of people who still use their Wii quite often. Ironically, they don't have a Wii U yet.

wouldn't disagree with you, except to put the LTD somewhat lower, maybe 12 or 13 million. squeak out a win over the DC by the skin of it's teeth.

an ADDITIONAL 10 million units sold in 3 years is fucking lunacy though. They couldn't hit that even if they sold them buy one get one free

Last we know, they had about 13.5 million worldwide in late October (Link).
Follow your links more thoroughly. It was 13.5M shipped through the end of September. :p
The number was from their quarterly report, which was delivered in late October. :)

Also, to catch everyone up, Microsoft's announcement was that they were approaching 10M shipped. Shipped numbers are generally given by quarters, and in mid- to late-November when they made the announcement, they were probably talking about their projected shipments through the end of the year. So in the sense that MS were approaching 10M shipped, Sony were approaching ~20M, or whatever number they reveal in the quarterly report at the end of the month. Probably 19.5M-20M, I'm guessing.

I personally am glad that it has paid off to make a powerful gaming console that does not rely on a gimmic. I hope that one part of sales is due to an emphasis on exclusive games like the last of us and playstation +. apparently console games are not dead. Apparently, players are affluent. Thats all good news.

well they should only be proud once microsoft announces their numbers. i don't think their that far off.

the gaps definitely closed a little in 2014.

Well Sony sold 4.2 million PS4s in 2013, compared to 3 million Xbone's.

So no, the gap did not close in 2014. 2014 IS the gap!

Incredible figure of course, but kind of an odd one to announce. Why not wait until 20 million to announce it? It would make sense if the figure was announced at the end of the fiscal year but even that's not the case.

How can anyone downplay this? PS4 is doing amazing numbers both in the US and out...MS is not laying down on the job in their home territory, but the fact of the mater is that PS4 is doing great and we should all be happy about that. People making annoying quips about games won't be saying much after this year when a supreme avalanche of games comes down the pipe

Oh thanks, I thought that it was from October because I was going off of the headline alone.

Not a fan of the dirty ps+ numbers. I'd rather get that number in February, once all the free subscriptions expire.

I figured Sony would have dropped the ww number closer to npd to offset their loss this holiday. I guess it doesn't really matter though.

Yeah, I can easily see this happening.

Wait till UC4 hits. It will likely shred the sales chart this holiday.

Yes, of course exclusives help to sell them, but mostly the consoles are for casuals who play the annual shooters and sports games. And the casuals these days choose more pixels and better visuals over anything else: PC gaming side effects. These same casuals buy that UC4 or Sunset Overdrive or any other hyped game, but mostly they just play those Battle of Call of Soccers.

That's cute, you think it's only 1 console manufacturer that's affected by what's going on in the traditional market, solely on the sell numbers of another single manufacturer.

Numbers don't really bear this out. There were somewhere around 85 million PS3's sold. The best selling Call of Duty (MW2) only sold about 5 million on the platform. There were other call of dutys, of course- but it's likely the same 5 million or so base buying them repeatedly. The BEST selling title was Gran Turismo, at a little more than 10 million.

I doubt the X1 is anywhere near 11 million do yea, sounds right. Goes to show how nuch MS has squandered with their terrible release and how much Sony has gained

Wow. Yea that's crazy. While it's true that PS+ also includes Vita and PS3 I'd wager a vast majority of the subscribers are PS4 owners and somehow this just puts things into perspective for me far more than the estimated WW numbers.
