Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

I don't think so, surely XB1 little above 10 million by now unless their sales went down to 50% of November in US for December.
I remember a thread from not too long ago mentioning the sold through numbers of the XBox One being slightly below 7 million. So assuming it did ~1.6 million in November alone and I expect sales to drop slightly in December giving ~1.3 million, it is still slightly below 10 million

With sellibg 1.2 million in US alone in november? I think its likely they sold thriugh 10 mill now

They were at 4.9M after November NPD. They will be somewhere between 5.5 and 6M after December. All the numbers we got since its release indicated USA represents more than 60% of worldwide sales and I see no reason to believe that percentage would be significally lower now. Do the maths. Of course, there is no proof for one statement or the other, that's more speculation than anything.

How come I can hear Snoop Dog sayin' "deezz nutz" in the background, circa 1995...

In conclusion, Wii shipped 4.32 million from Jan-Mar 2008 and was still selling out. There's no way the PS4 will match that. The PS4 will not be this close to the Wii total again at least until 2019.

Doesn't matter. What's most important is who PS4 is selling to, and that's gamers. Those sales are far more important than selling to a bunch of nongamers with a ten minute interest in the hobby.

They could be at 10 million however i find it more likely that they're between 9-9.5, maybe 9.75 million.

So I guess 6.2 million YTD as of now ... maybe they did sell through more than 10 million WW ...
UK had 1 million sold mid Nov. that means there would be 2-3 million missing consoles, where would they have sold them?

4.1 million sold in the holiday season alone, which ran from November 23 - January 3 in America, Europe and Latin America. For Japan and Asia that period was November 24 - January 4th.

On 123 countries to be honest.

I think Wii sold that number um less than a half.

From here: https://view.officeapps.live.com/op...gAssets/Downloads/FY15/Microsoft_2014ASM.docx

Satya Nadella: "Finally, our gaming business is thriving with the Xbox One hitting 10 million units sold."

So we know XBox One has sold in to retailers at least 10 million units by December 3rd.

I think someone at MS said that they were going to ship more consoles this Q4 compared to last year (3.9m), so being at 10 million by December 3rd is good. Looks like MS will hit their target.

I wonder if Sony put out this pr quickly just so that it would be kinda awkward for Ms to put one out announcing only 11 Mil or something.

Let's assume for a while that this 6.2 million LTD in the US is a fact. With all the crazy bundles in the US during the holiday season, I expect the sales percentage of the X1 to be closer to 70% currently. If my estimation is true, it would still be below 10 million WW

They could always say they are doing better than the 360. Also Sony announced 4.2 million PS4's last CES anyway.

US - 6-7 million units
UK - 2 million units
Rest of World - 100,000 units

I don't believe they've reached 10 million sold through just yet :p

Okay, that looks more like it :) Wow, the XB1 has it really rough outside the US ...

I don't know if your specific example is right, but I do agree that these announcements are strategic and influenced by back channel information between companies.

Opinion - Up until Feb 2015, I do not see any reason to own a PS4 at all. XB1 had more compelling reasons to own their system due to 1st party exclusives. So I cannot wrap my head around such high numbers sold for the PS4. Must have been the poweraid juice everyone was selling on the differences of the console products on the market today.

Now though, Sony is going to sell a hell of a lot more systems because people like me are finally going to get one due to the likes of BLOODBORNE/THE ORDER coming out early this year. Those numbers I'm even more interested about month per month. NPDs for Feb/Mar is going to be wild.

Isn't that 10 million figure from before blackfriday and christmas?

But that shipment would logically include the November sales. Shipped =/= magically in stores and sold.

So in theory, the numbers quoted are correct.

PS4 = 18.5m units sold to consumers WW by end of December 2014
XB1 ≈ 10m units sold to retailers WW by end of November 2014

The only 2 big unknowns is if the XB1 had another shipment in December that isn't counted in the 10m, and the actual WW Sell through number. But I don't expect MS to reveal that any time soon. Could be wrong though.

Ps4 is never going to hit Wii numbers. That thing was a phenomenon. It hooked the biggest majority from day 1, the casuals, and it took years and years before they let go.

Last gen Microsoft had the UK and US in their pocket without the need of success in Europe, this time around the balance has shifted to basically 50/50 in the US, 60/40 in the UK and 95/5 in Europe, in Sony's favour.

Where do you get 2 million UK units from? they announced 1 million on nov. 21st.

A huuuuuuuuge guesstimate for both UK/EU to make a point that the sold-through couldn't possibly be 10 million just yet .

EDIT :: Oh I just wrote UK? my bad. I meant UK/EU

And apparently this number is estimated by SCEI so it will be more shipped than anything

A lot of people expect the PS4 to match the Wii in sales but it doesn't necessarily have to in order to beat the Wii's LTD sales. Most importantly, support for the PS4 will most likely not drop off a few years in and it will continue selling extremely well. When all is said and done, I predict the PS4 will reach ~120 million sold through

Every sell-through figure they've given since PS4s became widely available in stores have been estimates. There's no magic sauce that determines in actuality the exact number of consoles sold-to-consumers at point of time.

With that being said, previous shipped vs sell-through figures have always put Sony's estimates around a million or so below their actual shipment figures. (though probably lower this time, since Europe was supply constrained more than usual)

1st party exclusives are not the only reason to buy a console. Millions of people are looking for a machine to play CoD, Destiny, 2K, etc.

Sony was extremely lucky with the ps3. Rest of world saved their burning ass. Ps3 was a complete disaster out of the gate. The ps3 recovered because of the brand loyalty they have outside us/uk.

The ps4? This thing is the perfect storm for Sony. Wiiu is a complete non-factor. Their direct competitor gave the ps4 a commanding lead out of the gate, and Sony still has that brand loyalty.

Except this time, Sony is doing extremely well in US and UK. Still not sure how those 2 territories will shake out in a few years, but I expect both of them to be very competitive there.

This generation could not have gone any better for Sony.

I also think the same.

I have a feeling that the xbone will never be this close to PS4 again (2:1 ratio). 2015 will also be a great year for Playstation.
Contrary to popular belief (and jokes!), the gap between the two is actually widening, especially in mainland Europe. I expect the gap to expand to 2.5:1 at the end of the cycle

Never say never. Who knows, maybe MS have something big up thier sleeve.
Not many can resist $299 with Halo5, forza 6 and tomb raider 2 for free next holiday.

Everybody has different likes in the games they buy so some may prefer sony exclusives and PS4 sold more in Europe where Playstation always #1 as a gaming platform. Also Console is a long term purchase so they know what is coming in 2015, for comparison look at what is there for XB1 in first half.

US sales should represent more than 60% of XB1 sales, probably as high as 70%, and that's because US was the only country that had $50 price cut.

I was expecting 20M for the PS4 by xmas. I think the story here is that Microsoft successfully discounted their way into a couple of million extra units globally. At a loss of $70 per unit, the whole thing probably only cost them $150-200M.

I'd say it was a good move. PS4 no longer leads the bone 2:1 worldwide, though it's still close to that.

Stateside, the numbers are probably much better for Microsoft, like others have said.

So are you ignoring the rest of the world or just talking about the US? Regardless of price and bundles, the X1 will never sell well outside of the US and UK

Opinion is a bit wrong, seeing the power difference had real world results. Many 3rd party games played better on the Ps4 vs the One. Even though the one had a stronger first party lineup, people prefer the more powerful system.

MS may try to be competitive and close the gap in US, but rest of the world its not possible as they already lost it if we look at the their first half of 2015 compared to PS4.

I'm pretty sure it is. PS4 beat them globally every month last year. How is possible the gap is shrinking if PS4 outsold them every month. It can only grow.

What about add Minecraft 2 to the mix? Move some unit for the rest of the world?

Sony in the UK was actually doing stuff in December compared to what they did in the US.

Saw that edit. =3

TBF though, Sony did do stuff in December. However, it's definitely poorly telegraphed and all-over-the-place. (there was like 10 different deals across 5 different time windows in December )
