Who says the cake is smaller? Why worry about the market most viable for actual video game sales? Not like mobile games aren't a 1/1000000 success rate.

Anyone know how this compares to the early years of the PS3 and 360? Because PS3 came out surrounded by lots of negativity and the 360 was the clear winner (In terms of sales) but towards the end the PS3 caught up.

The 360 came out a year ahead of the competition tough, kind of complicated to compare the two.

You need to think in terms of marketshare, not in terms of absolute numbers.

a 20M to 10M gap is much more significant than a 100M to 90M gap, even though the gap is 10M in both cases.

Your marketshare can decrease even if you keep outselling your competitor because you don't just need to outsell them, you need to keep outselling them 2:1 to keep your marketshare intact.

I will be extremely curious to see how well PS4 sales do now that I will have a good stream of games coming out.
I also think you would have to be crazy to not believe they will reach at least 80M lifetime.....
As far as the competition, the Wii U is dead (sales wise) as they have already had their biggest exclusives out, and are much cheaper, and still have not managed to make a dent in market share.....I think it was real telling when PS4 passed up the Wii U's LTD back in February (it was February right?)
The X1 will be more competitive, but only in NA, and UK regions. I think that at this point, Microsoft would love just to reach X360's LTD with the X1, though I don't think it will happen.
PS4 will likely have more than 50% marketshare at the end of the generation, though I don't think it will be another Gamecube/Xbox deal like it was years ago.

PS4 will be different. I predict it will have much longer legs, and while I am not sure about the prospect of it reaching PS2 numbers, I don't think it is impossible if Sony plays their cards right, but if it does reach PS2's number, it will likely be several years after PS5 comes out.

The number is impressive no doubt. 18.5 mil without God Of War, Gran Turismo, or Uncharted.

Man people are still desperate to dismiss wii sales. How salty.

That It didn't have the industry support just means the industry fucked up. That it didn't last 8 years means it didn't take as long to actually make money.

Speaking of which - I think most people believe this will be a shorter generation than the last (that appeals to less people/demographics than the last few), so I don't think the ps4 (or any console ever again) will ever be the amazing mainstream juggernaut the ps2 was.

Well, the Wii was lightning in a bottle of course. Especially if you look at the Gamecube that preceded it and the Wii U that followed it. But if you compare 360 and PS3 sales to PS4 and One sales, this gen is off to a much better start. And you should take a healthy PC market into account as well. The industry is fine.

Almost 20 million sales in about a year is a great result. It'll be interesting to see where it is a year from now.

I think people rightly recognize the Wii for what it is...an anomaly. It branched out into a market segment never before seen in the traditional console space. It made money by not appealing to the traditional gaming market (except for a few first party titles for the Nintendo faithful) and managed to draw in new customers. Those customers later left to find games on mobile and tablet platforms and Nintendo couldn't repeat that success with the WiiU. The Wii had a new feature everyone wanted to check out, was cheaper than the other traditional game consoles, and had the weird games to draw in the crowds. Those three things combined to make it a success, a success which MS tried to duplicate without really understanding what caused it. Hence why a $500 console with Kinect just didn't have the appeal that a $250 Wii had.

I do agree this generation will be shorter, only because the last one went on so long. The PS4 I believe is the console with the most potential to repeat the PS2 era, but it will need to get down to about $300 before it really starts to take off. That won't happen immediately.
 
Only up to page 12 parsing the thread, but the first thing that comes to my mind when taking into account both the worldwide hardware sell-through and the game sales themselves is the absolute amazement that there are still game devs in Japan that refuse to market or sell games to non-Japanese audiences and instead find themselves with negative balance sheets trying to scrounge out a living on the non-existent Japanese console market.

Japanese devs trying to appeal to the western market resulted in horrible games. They could market it all they want but they should not put the western audience into consideration when developing a title. Outside of a few scenarios they just don't excel at it.

Consoles generally peak at the third year. Sony in particular always plans 10 year cycles for their systems…. I'll let that settle in a bit before you think about the potential total sales of the PS4 :P

No qualifications, no IMO, it looked like you were stating a fact. Until we see some firm data from MS about shipments or sell through it is going to be very difficult to see the global picture for Xbox.

Wasn't the Wii 150 bucks less than the PS4, though? Also, there was kinda still a Japanese market for consoles...
 
Nicely done Sony, however I wonder what the sales figure is going to be if they announced a PS4+ version with better hardware to handle 4K gaming.
