Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

No offense, but that's a dumb reason for buying a system and an equally dumb reason for wanting to replace it.

it's not really dumb. Look at all the smaller games skipping the X1 and going PS4/PC only. If you're ibto that then yea it's a good reason to go with PS4

I don't think either reason is dumb. On the one hand, people like to stay in ecosystems they already call home, and on the other, one might want to move ecosystems when it seems like the other one will be treated better in the future.

Japanese devs trying to appeal to the western market resulted in horrible games. They could market it all they want but they should not put the western audience into consideration when developing a title. Outside of a few scenarios they just don't excel at it.

This...Capcom tried this nonsense by outsourcing to Ninja Theory and we got a bastardized and terrible version of Devil May Cry.

Never again Japan, never again.

You said that, but the big Japanese games that appeal to the west are mostly western aesthetics or characters, (MGS, RE, Souls etc.)

Lol even Mario is Italian =p

The fact that these games opted for a more realistic look does not make them westernized. The Souls series is the only one that fits the criteria and even then it's mechanics are different from western titles.

I don't WANT them to fail (though I'm glad they received a sales punishment for trying to push anti-consumer bullshit and Kinect).

But the 360 even wasn't that successful in regards to profit, especially since they needed it to make back the OG Xbox's huge losses.
They don't need to make back the OG Xbox losses.

And honestly I would be surprised if they made insane amounts of profits from 360, Xbox live have been a billion dollars per year business since a few years ago, then there's software sales, then there's the fact that it didn't take long for Ms to make money on each 360 sold.

And if it it didn't, it's impossible to deny think it's quite telling that Ms decided to offer subscription based offers from many of their products after the test and success of Xbox live

I bought the Xbox One because I wanted to keep my achievements and gamertag. If I knew the PS4 would sell this well, I would probably have bought it instead.

Uhh, pretty much everybody saw the PS4 selling a lot better than the Xbone considering all of Microsoft's fuck-ups.

I remember a lot of...

"People will go with Xbox one because they had a 360"

Talk initially. But yeah, the overwhelming majority here figured ps4 would sell more and a lot of guys like me (who were firmly 360 last gen) jumped ship.

Man people are still desperate to dismiss wii sales. How salty.

That It didn't have the industry support just means the industry fucked up. That it didn't last 8 years means it didn't take as long to actually make money.

Speaking of which - I think most people believe this will be a shorter generation than the last (that appeals to less people/demographics than the last few), so I don't think the ps4 (or any console ever again) will ever be the amazing mainstream juggernaut the ps2 was.
The time of a console generation it's defined to the sales. If ps4 will sell for more years, for example, hardly will dead sooner. People presume this generation will be shorter just because consoles are weaker compared the past, but I find this assumption completely wrong. Furthermore predict this console will not sell like ps2 just because people presume this generation will be shorter, well, it's a weird presumption.
About the wii success, we can say it had a totally different audience. Casual costumers numbers are enormous. No one want to downplay the wii sales, but if you ask me, I think ps4 it's more core gamers centric and considering this, it's a more impressive result, imho.

So that's exclusive to Japanese games?

There is a particular gameplay "taste" that the top quality Japanese titles give that is so defined, so solid, so logical, so pristine compared to their Western top quality counterparts. It's more common to find in classic Japanese games, but one classic Western game that gives me a similar vibe are the original Tomb Raiders.

to catch up? of course not
yes, to catch up. what else is tehre?
What do you define as hope? XBone shipments for all of 2014 are going to be right around 6M units total, worldwide. That includes a bunch of likely-well-stocked-yet-lackluster launches in TIer 2+. The XBone sales you see in the US and UK represent almost the entirety of their overall sales. Other countries aren't buying it. Honest.

But let's assume it is selling just as well in countries that don't speak English, and rather than having stock gathering dust worldwide, those launch shipments are being replenished regularly. So that's ~6M shipments in 2014 for MS, compared to ~15M shipments for Sony in the same period.

So let's look to 2015. We know MS will have some exclusives for the holiday, and we know Sony will have exclusives all year long. MS are already back to $400, where they were being outsold by Sony nearly 2:1, even in the US. This holiday, MS were able to pull ahead of Sony in the US and UK by drastically undercutting Sony on price/freebies. Meanwhile, Sony mostly stood pat on their value proposition and handily outsold MS worldwide, even counting the slight loss they took in the English-speaking countries.

But, by next holiday, PS4 will almost assuredly be at $299, so where do MS go to buy sales at that point? $199 with two games? For Black Friday 2014, XBone bundles were literally going toe-to-toe with PS3 bundles on price. So seriously, what's the plan for 2015?

Sony shipped 15M in 2014, and with a legitimate price cut 2015, they can include a steamy turd in the box and do the same again. 20M units in 2015 with a price cut is easily possible; it's only 33% more than they shipped at $399. They could maybe even do a bit more than 20M if the $500 bundle with Morpheus takes off.

So another 15M-20M for Sony this year, and realistically what, 5M for XBone? That'd be 3M US, 1M UK, and 1M Elsewhere. That's only a little off their 2014 shipments; I think they'd have to be pretty happy with that, especially in the face of a significant price cut on the PS4. So maybe 37M:14M by the end of 2015, 55M:18M for 2016, 75M:20M for the end of 2017… So probably something like the PS2 generation. Like PS2, PS4 could hit ~100M in five years, and continue to sell for a while after the PS5 launches. By the time the PS5 launches, the XBone will likely be a bit over 20M with the majority of those sales coming in the US and UK, much like sales of the XBox.

So with sales like that, I think XBone users can always "hope" for a port of Madden, and probably stuff like CoD too. Basically, about the same level of support the original XBox got. Were you hoping for more? It seems pretty unlikely that Ono will be the last developer to realize they're better off without Microsoft.

Also, MS could actually pull the plug on the entire project before it even runs five years. Again, that's what happened to the original XBox when they decided it was going nowhere. Earlier in the thread, some people were talking about MS likely wanting to "exit the market gracefully" or some fanciful shit like that, but that's not the MS I know. Look at the Zune; when MS decide they're done, zero fucks are given.
Okay you've made a bunch of valid points, but the only one I can argue with is the boldd. Yes the xbone is back up to $400, but perhaps that price point can still ride off the the momentum it had going into the holiday season. After all, it did end Sony's winning streak...
Lets see if the XBox Division still exists in 4 to 7 years

who's that?
It's almost too good.

New Microsoft Boss

Who knows man. I mean I heard about these small games called Call of Duty, and there's these yearly sports games also. I wonder if anyone plays those

I heard a small Scottish studio re released a small game called Grand Theft Auto V. Hope it works out for those guys

Why would they when the Xbox One has multi-million unit selling exclusives like Sunset Overdrive and Forza Horizon 2?

I'm thinking they'll announce 12 million shipped.
And when whould we be hearing this announcement? I mean, if MS had shipped 10M at start of December (making shipments of Jan-Nov 2014 total 6.1M), by when should they have added two million to this?

PS4 is selling great. Not sure why though when their major exclusives are not even out yet.

Because they come towards the end of a generation. God of War II on the PS2 or The Last Of Us on the PS3. Sony could order all it's 1st party developers to develop for next gen but they always split support for the first year or two between two generationss.

wait for Xb1 sales first, it won't be.
btw of the two, is the Wii U who's selling really bad, xb1 is doing good compared to the previous generations

Say what you will but imo MS has a legitimate threat for 2nd place this gen with Nintendo the Wii U isn't dead yet and there's more creativity coming out of Nintendo than there is MS on the gaming front so ignore them at your own peril.

PS4 is selling great. Not sure why though when their major exclusives are not even out yet.

Because major exclusives are not the only thing that can drive console sales. PS4 was a "better package" than Xbone in so many fields, not even counting pricing.

Let us not forget that GT6 was released on PS3 after debut of PS4. :) And before it, PS3 also recieved GoW:A, Beyond and Puppeteer. All great candidates for nextgen gaming that were "left behind" on oldgen.

PS4 is selling great. Not sure why though when their major exclusives are not even out yet.
Because exclusives do not and have never sold a modern console. In the West, most people care about having the most recent CoD, BF, FIFA, Madden and similar titles. Anything else is icing on the cake.

What Momentum? The momentum of being 50-100 bucks cheaper with free games? That's gone now

All my friends bar 2 who had a 360 last gen now have Ps4's.

Dunno, more like 7m in NA, 9-9.5m WW.

7m for NA sounds high if we were at 5-5.1 million as of Dec 1st.
That would imply 2 million sold in December in NA.

I'm not expecting anything that high. The price cut was no longer something new. We had reported of sales fizzling out a bit after a few weeks after the price cut.

And we saw in UK, the sales of the XB1 eclipsed the PS4 for a few weeks, but that trend reversed.

I don't think either reason is dumb. On the one hand, people like to stay in ecosystems they already call home, and on the other, one might want to move ecosystems when it seems like the other one will be treated better in the future.

Agreed. I mean I don't really care about trophy's but if some one does, I could see why they would want to stay. And I can definitely understand wanting to stay in the same ecosystem. It is what you know and if you are happy with it I can easily see why not stay in the same.

And as for wanting the most popular game system, well historically the system that does the best gets the most game support too and therefore you are much less likely to miss a good game cause they didn't think your console was worth supporting (That's one of the reasons I went with PS4 because it already looked like it was going to be successful. Though, for me it was more of a, "I don't think I'll go wrong" cause I had other reasons for wanting to stay within PS as well <- just not trophies ;) ).

We'll see, but I think it's likely. December is huge and there's a 5 week gap.
No. December may be huge, but anything sold through during December has to have been shipped latest by November. You don't fill your shelves with consoles for the slow months of the year.

XB1 should be at 8.75-9.5 million sold-through WW as of Jan. 3rd.

6~ in the US
3~ WW

Didn't expect the Wii U to hold on to second place for as long as it did lol

Sony will probably be reaching 40m by the end of holiday season 2015.

Man, I really hate that they use shipped, especially when the game media is so quick to help them fudge it up for the audience

Well, they kind of have to, at least in their official reports. Because they can track those numbers themselves. The sold-through numbers on the other hand are based on estimations.

I doubt they will hit 40m. I think if they hit 35m, they will be crazy happy.

That seems to be very unlikely. They will very likely reach 20m after their FY 2015, but further 20m not before late 2016, unless they reduce the PS4's price tag significantly.

Don't console sales usually increase in the second year of its lifecycle?

My 40m goal comes with the expectation of a $299 price + numerous high quality 1st party/3rd party games.
