I think we were just upfront about the situation with Lampard. LFC seem to have been leading Gerrard on since the summer, and now that things haven't gone their way this season, they're ready to make the change. It's a shitty predicament, but it is just business. No one is at fault or owed anything.

We don't owe him the wages of a world class player when he hasn't got the legs to start most games without massively impacting the pace we play at, and he doesn't owe us his service if he's not satisfied with less gametime and lower wages.

I imagine our delay in offering a contract was because we were rightly hesitant to offer him wages before we had a clear idea of how steep his decline would be and how it would impact the team.

Like all top class footballers though, that seems to have hit Gerrard right in the ego, and he's decided to leave. Ah well. I'd like him to stay, but there's no way we should bend over backwards to the detriment of our performances and finances to make it happen.

Its a massive shame, but he as entered that group of players FSG were so desperate bomb out of the club post-Kenny, the group of players whose wages were way out of line with what they were providing on the pitch. Not to the same extent as the likes of Downing, Carroll and Reina, but still. I don't begrudge us paying Gerrard those wages as he's such an icon to me, but that's not how you run a football club when you don't have a sugar-daddy and FFP is a concern
