Has anyone else here just ignore what they did for their undergrad and went on a different career route/masters program? Studied Criminology, discovered it was worthless, landed a two-year gig in Public Health overseas, and now I'm looking at possibly doing it for my Masters when I return state side.

Only thing that happened with me is that I initially applied for game programming but was assigned to a mix of art, programming and design. I ended up specializing in game design, no matter my beautiful art skills.

Pre internet days and PP slides i used this.. i'm 26 but i remember my time in junior high using it... it was painful to say the least writing with markers and glue..bad times man..

Sounds fancy but in reality it's just a bunch of sociology classes. it pretty much consists of debates and mediation, last semester we practiced mediation sessions it was pretty cool until the final came around and we were recorded trying to solve a dispute between two parties. Intimidating but awesome at least I become cerfitified looks good on my resume.
Gotcha. Is it generally more small-scale? I know my sister studied stuff like conflict resolution, but she was more interested in how to implement it on a larger scale (through education.)

hey pau, who do you write your literary reviews for?
It's for a research paper that my fellowship requires. Figured I'd get a head start since it's due in May and I'm hoping to present some of it at a conference in the spring. I'm still undergrad, so I don't have access to a lot of resources for the actual experiment part, but I'm doing research on player identity and avatar choice in video games. I think at this point I've read every (English) research published about video game avatars. I'm probably gonna be putting up something on GAF for the interview portion if I get it approved by the mods.

Sadly not yet, working on that.
Buena suerte! I'm sure you'll find something.

I feel like such a baby. Haven't even finished my undergrad. :(

It is not like I can draw, hell, I can barely write. It is a miracle I have managed to do the courses I needed to do. They said to me I could drop them, but I never could.

Even worse are the artists that had to do programming though.

Buena suerte! I'm sure you'll find something.

Thanks! Should receive a response next week about a good interview I had, but one position and many applicants, so you never know.

Also my role model in life is Goofy. Did I make the right decision?

I screwed up and finished my degree 10 years too late. Now I can't easily get into my field of choice because I can't risk the pay cut. I need to look into trying to do some part time stuff, but I tend to get a bit tired and lazy later in the day.

It can be applied towards work in Human Resources for big companies and also for people who seek mediation after failed attempts in civil courts. I guess via education it can work as a counselor at all levels but at the end of the day it's good to have it cause it's pretty much telling your prospect employer that you know how to deal with conflict and that you can get along with co-workers and customers. Plus it makes you look like a people's person.

I'm not exactly sure what an undergrad is, but I have a masters in Human Resource Management and at the moment I'm a Purchase To Pay Consultant.

It's strange, when you're at university you have this picture of how your life will be after school. And then you get your degree, get knocked down by life a couple of times and when the smoke clears you're nowhere near where you thought you would be but somehow probably better off.

Or at least, that's my experience. When you've studied to be a brain surgeon, jumping to another profession might not be as easy/smart.

I just got a series of birthday gifts designed to troll me from my coworkers. Including a bottle of mayo, a ridiculous pink shower cap and a bottle of "sparkling grape drink".

everytime mutes posts something I have to imagine him saying it with the exact same face in his avatar, which makes everything instantly sound high pitched & sarcastic

sounds interesting, certainly more so than my typical sexist tropes and misogyny in video games that i wrote about during my undergrad. i'll give it a read if/when it gets posted here.

When I was studying, I thought about entering the criminal justice field, even as a law enforcement officer. I was all "Wooo! Wooo! Authority! Let's go, my fellow Republicans! Woo! Woo!" mind frame back then. Such a complete 180 turn from my senior year! Hopefully I can follow my hipster path and eventually join the USAids (or bump it up to the Foreign Service).

Pau, how do you have time to read as much as you do while in school?!

i always swear hat the best thing i ever drew was a jar of mayo

Oh man, depends on what you mean "best" but I have incredible amounts of things I have drawn that I always enjoy seeing.

Like how TDM that TDM pic would be the best thing I have animated.

By actually best thing would be a drawing of a hand with a pair of scissors. Boring as all fuck.

Anyone here doing animation or digital media as their course?

Well, partly.

When I see something like this researched, I'm always a bit scared that my preference will be linked to some deviant behaviour or something.

Like: Male gamers who create goth-ish female characters that only date dwarves are more likely to die of auto-erotic asphyxiation. And then I look over to DAI where I was just trying to romance Varric with my Morticia Adams-like avatar...

Yeah, it's gotta be rigorous enough to hopefully be published in academic journals. Not super intense ones, but it's a start! I think it's an interesting area of discussion that hasn't had too much academic focus.

I used to study Illustration but then I realized I wasn't a good enough artist. :P

Reading on the toilet, reading in between classes, reading on the train, trying to read at work when no one is around. I make time for it, but it means I barely play any video games or do a lot of interesting stuff. My life pretty much consists of class, work, homework, sleep, cuddling with my boyfriend, and reading. And hanging out with friends every now and then.

Nah, it's not like that. :P I'm just interested in what makes people experiment with identity (or if they even think of it that way) or what makes them select avatars in their own image. My research in particular is about whether people are more likely to choose avatars that don't reflect their identity in single player games versus multi-player. Focusing on the gender and race aspect of it since like I said, I don't have as much time/money/experience as I'd like, but ideally I'd continue with socio-economic class and sexual orientation.

Totally. Contrary to some of the hyperbole spouted on GAF about how saying "hi" makes you a creep... you can say hi. You can even tell someone they're attractive without being considered a creep.
You're attractive.

And you. And you. And also you!
Having been born and raised in Florida and currently living in Maryland, I have to disagree lol.
State is too fucked up and I prefer the cold over the heat. 100F/37C+ visiting the Miami zoo was terrible.
RateMyProfessor is legit
It definitely is. Very helpful during undergrad.
Dude, I so totally look a year older.

Like, 16, at least!
Where is the fountain of youth?
That's true art.

I'd love to use the public transit to commute to work. I just want to read books rather than driving!

And as I invest more time into books, I noticed a significant decrease in time with video games. It's a saddening dilemma. As much as I enjoy talking about games, there's a special something when I can talk about books and political topics with people, particularly when I'm on a date or flirting with someone!

Yeah, unfortunately many women see games as childish, akin to playing with dolls. If you have a ps/xbox with a sports game or man-shooter on it, they'll begrudgingly accept that as a "guy thing", but they certainly don't want to hear or talk about it. Anything else and they'll probably view you as juvenile.

It is unfortunate, but that's why people should have a variety of interests rather than be extremely specific to only one. This is true regardless of gender.

I think women have a problem when certain guys prioritize gaming over more important things especially those guys who don't like going out and i prefer to spend a friday night just playing video games instead of saying "hey babe let's go out to dance, dinner, cruise around the city etc"

if you're spontaneous and always keep her on her toes she will never have a problem with your hobby of gaming, that's just my opinion i could be wrong since everyone is different but thats my belief anyway ;P

Been watching the Fargo series earlier today on blu and it's pretty darn amazing. Anyone who loved the movie should watch the series asap. On episode 5 now and will continue the other 5 tomorrow. Good Shit.

As a Minnesotan, I hate the movie.

Series is pretty good though.

What if I didn't enjoy the movie?

Then I don't see how you'd love the series? Well, since it's more of the same thing. Exceptional performances and fantastic writing surrounded by dark comedy, as dark as it can get.

What if I never watched the movie?

You should get on to watching it then.

I don't know anything about being a Minnesotan but I enjoy the local, the people and the general mood of both the movie and the show which is very consistent with the movie.
