Looks great, but I really do wish they'd drop the whole 'a thinking robot is the end of humanity' plot.
How about going in a different direction for a change? Maybe explore the religious aspect/response of having a true AI exist?

Hopefully religion on a large scale is more or less gone when real AI comes around. This movie takes place in 2016 tho from what I know.

For those asking about Briareos Hecatonchires similarity, Blomkamp said Chappie's designed is inspired by it because he loves Appleseed and Briareos Hecatonchires. The "ears" is a particular homage which is what causes the similarity.

Movie looks like pap. I enjoyed District 9, the Matt Damon movie was way too heavy handed and this looks like a shitty attempt to recreate the magic of Short Circuit. The trailer makes the whole premise seemed forced. Chappie's voice is grating and the quirky woman (scientist) already gets on me nerves.. her voice.. ugh.. why?

Especially considering that they try to combat a robot with a conscience by deploying a remote controlled mech with enough firepower to demolish a small country. How is Chappie more threatening to humanity than that?

Feels derivative. Unsure ....actually, not unsure, I don't want to go and have a movie try and get me emotionally invested in the robot only to have it die.
And then maybe not die. But at some point, he's "dead".
And then we all learn people are horrible and we should be better people. It's been done.

Pretty much. I gotta say watching the Chappie trailer before watching Interstellar and seeing TARS just further convinced me how much I don't want to see it.

He's one of the most gifted, talented and promising directors working today. No wonder Microsoft head-hunted him for the potential Halo movie a while back. I think everyone was just so surprised and blinded by the narrative and visual awesomeness of District 9 that Elysium being disappointingly conventional and only just above average was an immense letdown in comparison. I enjoyed Elysium for what it was but it came nowhere near to District's 9 extremely high-level.
Super excited for this regardless and I'll watch anything this guy ever does. Now and in the future.

Because from the trailer everything about Chappie seems cliche and trite, the AI robot built by a socially awkward scientist who grows close to his creation and teaches it to become more human. Then of course the government reflects the ugly side of humanity and wants the AI for its nefarious purpose thus the little robot must find his strength and overcome all the odds whilst displaying an awe inspiring humanity which touches even the most grizzled human government agent...

Now, who the hell knows it could be totally different than that but I'm not betting on it. Meanwhile TARS in Interstellar
was a refreshing change from the usual robot AI. He's not humanized in anyway, he looks like a block and was simply designed to be efficient, his only "human" traits are those programmed for US human to get along with HIM more, but they are totally customizable. TARS has no feelings, he feels no pain, and despite his humor setting, he does exactly what he is told to do. It's why I love the last part where Dr. Brand gets all emotional and says that Cooper can't ask TARS to sacrifice himself. It just displays our often illogical human ability to create emotional bonds even with intimate objects, but TARS feels none of this attachment and reminds everyone he does exactly as he is told and thus has no qualms about sacrificing himself. It's like when people look at a box that looks like it has a face and thinks its sad or happy and thus are slightly moved when "good" or "bad" things happen to the box. But, at the end of the day it's a box, it isn't sad or happy we're just illogically imparting our emotions on to it. Brilliant.
