The Kamui system looks terrible imo. Depriving yourself of an extra character is dumb in and of itself, but now it seems the Kamui transformations have their own move sets that are the exact same for Rose and Sorey which is lame.

It's kinda like linking except seemingly worse in every way thus far. I was definitely considering inporting but with the quick localization time, I can wait.

So few games try to make combining work in a multiplayer setting.

Actually the only one that comes to mind is Lost Planet 2.

It seems the best that can be done here is 2 player (that's assuming multiplayer is still in).

Kinda disappointed that both fusions seem to have the same attacks and stuff. Not really sold on the feature as a whole really, hopefully more interesting applications of it get unlocked in the full game.

I'm getting it from Amiami and the conversion rate has it at around $61, but with shipping it'll probably go up to $75-80. :P

Kayos is doing it for the western release but I'm not sure if there was an agreement on the import thread, if no one comes forward I guess I could put together something small.

I think folks were trying to get me to do it, but I passed on it. Too much ARR and all that and absolute fatigue on modern Tales.

Sorey doesn't seem too bad. I guess he may fall into "dumb hick in the city" trope for a while though. Still, one of the less annoying tales protags, at least if that episode is accurate and he doesn't angst out at some point.

It was good.

The only thing that threw me off is how Sorey and Mikleo
just stood around while fox guy ate Maisen. And afterwards absolutely no one cared at all that Maisen just died.

So the special would be around the first 2ish hours of the game right? Anyway, I liked it and Sorey seems like a pretty cool guy so far. Alisha with her hair down though...

Ok, been working (kinda slowly lol) at putting an OT together for it then.

I'm hoping the special wasn't copying the first hour or two of the game verbatim and was just a quickly put together and condensed version of it to get people hyped/interested, because the way all that played out was really weird. Felt like there was a conversation between that scene and the fireworks scene that got skipped or something.

That aside, I actually kinda like that it seems to be fairly traditional fantasy adventure story so far. I'm sure there'll be twists and stuff but I wouldn't mind something that isn't trying too hard to be original or blow minds.

I thought that part was funny. Mostly in the lack of any attention given to him, during or afterwards.

Anyway, the special was pretty awesome. I liked how it established Slay's character, his bromance with Mikleo and setting up the world in a limited fashion.

The prequel anime is more of a stand alone piece than I expected.

It's not even a prequel really. It's looks to be the first hour or so of the game considering we've seen in game footage of everything that happened in the special (exploring the ruins, Mikleo getting in Alisha's face, Sorey/Mikleo's confrontation with fox guy).

I'm fully aware of that. I was just expecting them to make animated scenes that could be reused in the game (or vice versa, assembling animated clips intended for the game). As is it seems like a totally redundant animated version of what everyone's expecting to be the opening gameplay, with comparable little options for reuse. That's quite some budget investment, two episodes worth of full animation as marketing for a series that's known to be budget starved. Couldn't find any game specific staff in the listing either.

ufotable either goes all out or all out.

RIP Maisen.

Mikleo and Sorey were pulling out dem combos on the fox guy.

I'm liking the characters. I hope Mikleo continues to be cool throughout with Sorey instead of a jealous stuck-up guy that his archetype sometimes tends to be.

Just going from the OVA, Sorey seems like he'll be a lot more likable than the usual "ignorant of the outside world" characters since that bit with the ruins make it seem like he'd want to actively learn about things unlike characters like Lloyd or Shing who were just stupid and apparently didn't try to learn anything.

I doubt they do that for free though.

Btw. someone who's credited in several major roles in this special, ufotable's Haruo Sotozaki (外崎 春雄), already worked on plenty Tales games through Production I.G before. So I'm gonna guess that ufotable will keep doing all major Tales games as there appears to have been quite some leakage from Production I.G, and Wit Studio (involved in illustrations and animation for Tales spin offs) may be the place that retains the remaining Tales animation talents from Production I.G.

Well, of course it's not free! The staff stuff is interesting. I didn't realize that. Well, I'm glad it all works out. Ufotable will probably end up being in a partnership with NB provided profits are good just like they are with Type-Moon.

Speaking of, just watched the Shepherd's Advent. I'm glad Sorey is very enthusiastic and not an idiot. Having said, he is extremely naive and I hope that plays a part in the story. Also, ufotable is freaking amazing with the visuals in this. There are some downgrades compared to their normal stuff like weird looking phases for distanced characters and stuff but man this is amazing. The fight choreography was awesome as well. I'm more excited for ufotable's stuff in this game than I am anything rofl.

End up? Ufotable was doing the Symphonia animation since 2007 and is involved in all things God Eater since 2009 (did a prologue for that back then as well, though that was a meager 10 minutes, lol). It's certainly getting more though (God Eater anime is taking too long).

Sorey has been an enjoyable protagonist so far going off of the OVA. Koyasu voicing that Fox dude though, it's just like I'm watching Phantom Blood.

Sorey's character is fine, but it definitely needs a good dynamic to back him up. For what it's worth, I think Mikleo from the get-go is already a strong counterpoint to Sorey, level-headed, rational but also an accommodating bro who isn't an arse.

Well, GE anime project's only announced with some scant details. Who knows when that'll turn out.

Wow, I loved it! Already like the main trio and the fox dude was creepy
when he inhaled whole
. Now I really want to import again, please announce a concrete Western date soon Namco. June/July would be perfect.

Would love a Tales original anime by Ufotable. I agree that it seems a strange choice to have them make this though. Like it surely wasn't that cheap and I hope ToZ doesn't have any really cheap feeling parts where I'll question their decision to not give more money to the game instead of an anime special that just details the first hours of the game lmao

OVAs off games aren't a new thing. You underestimate its branding/marketing potential in Japan, not to mention RoI off the animation itself.

Even Atelier, as much as it doesn't measure up to Tales in terms of production value, has 12-episode anime made of it.

Well apparently after the anime special aired in Japan the game became the number 1 preordered game of Amazon: link, so I guess they accomplished what they wanted with it.

Now I hope we can get a release date for NA and the other regions soon but I suppose it will be announced after the japanese release.

I know that they've been in one for a while. I'm just saying it'll end up going for a long while.

Ufotable also animated opening sequences for Banpresto/Bamco's Summon Night Granthese (still surprised at how it looks, it's not pushing much post processing effects even though it was released in 2010) and Summon Night 5 (which looks like every ufo post KnK op). And Go Shiina also worked for three ufotable anime (Majocco, Gyo, Sakura no Ondo) and his fourth one will be God Eater, all directed by Hirao Takayuki. There's something between these two :P

Anyway, I don't think this trailer has been posted? The TOZ special episode didn't look very good to me but the anime cutscenes in the game look better imo. We also see some cuts of the op at the very end, it seems promising.

That's about when you can expect it from what they said about wanting to release it in the same year and so on.

I've never played a Tales of game but I've always been interested in the series. What are the recommended games to play?

Calling it now,
Maisen
will be the final boss.

His rage and resentment towards being forgotten by those he called "family" will be the impetus for using Fox Guy as a catalyst to become the most powerful Hyouma so that he can exact his vengeance upon the world and (Sorey).

Ufotable always does good work imo, they are very consistent from what I've seen. I really like their use of colour especially. The saturation looks different than works from other studios.

I don't think that last trailer has been posted before. I was pretty lukewarm on this game going in from the initial announcement but I'm anticipating it a lot more now as we're getting closer to release.

I've come to the conclusion that Rose is the only one with a good, complete art design.

Each one is flawed in its own special way; what is it you really search for and really disdain in a JRPG, so I can answer that.

Honestly I think Rose looks terrible.

OVA is quite good. I really like Sorey's expressions and Mikleo seems to be a good bro. He is more calm and serious than the main character but isn't as annoying as Hubert (which I hated). The dark spirit that eats Tenzokus has a cool design, kind of remind me a Kitsune.

The story so far was interesting. Seems more standard fantasy which is appreciated after the Industrial Age look in Xillia. Game looks more colorful, which is nice. There were some quite nice songs, there is one that I especially liked.

Honestly I think Rose looks terrible.

IMO things go like this.

Awesome: Nobody.
Good: Rose, Priestess girl, Sorey without cape
Decent: Mikleo, Sorey with cape, Umbrella girl.
Bad: shirtless baddie that is totally not becoming a party member later in the game, hat dude is kind of weird.
Bloomers: Alisha.

I'd even take a damn skirt even if it was short over those bloomers. That thing is terrible.

I've grown to really like Alisha's design, especially after the special.

Still think Mikleo and Leala's costumes clash with everyone else.

That's the worst part. The design itself is good. Most of it looks quite realistic and it'd be my favorite design in the game if it wasn't for the bloomers. They look really off.

When she doesn't wear his armour in the OVA they don't look that weird. But when she wears it they don't suit the overall design at all.

no TP means I might get this game, I skipped Xillia 2 and Xillia bored me to death even if I did finish it, even if I might skip it and wait to see if they port it to PS4.

I saw the OVA and the story seems interesting, I also really like Alisha.

I feel that Tales doesn't really need TP too. CC is a much better resource for the kind of game Tales is.

Especially because most of the time there is little management. Healers and magicians have a "use X gel" when TP is lower than Y%. And with the others characters you equip mid game enough skills to recover / keep TP high enough (like 1% for each 9 hits, 10% after defeating an enemy...). TP is a hassle, the game is not suited for TP management.

CC + damage penalty for Artes if you spam the same one over and over again looks like a better solution. Paying attention to elemental weaknesses like Xillia 2 did would be cool, especially because Tengoku fusions are element based. An the aura system from Graces (no skills, make it a Base mechanic. In Xillia 2 the system didn't worked as well because it was tied to a skill).

Switching party members on battle was cool in Xillia, but it's not on my top requests. My dream Tales is a mix of Graces and Xillia 2 mechanics.
