That's another thing that fell way short of the hype for me.
I love JRPGs, but this being an "Action-RPG" killed it for me (and the piles of movies just buried the corpse at that point)

After having my TouchPad for a while, on a whim, I thought, "Let me download that Angry Birds game that everyone has been talking about."
Little did I know how obsessed I would become with it. I beat all 243 levels (and got all 3 stars on 119 levels). I haven't played it in over a year, but at the time, I was absolutely obsessed with it.

Nah, there are pretty of polygonal games that I love.
While I do in general prefer 2D over 3D, that's not the sole reason - or even really a reason at all - for my dislike of Sunshine and Galaxy
Remind me, how did you like 3DL/3DW? For me, 3DW = SMG/2 >> SM64 >>>>> SMS.

It's a mix. I wouldn't overall say I prefer one over the other, they would just kind of be interspersed between each other

Star Trek Into Darkness: the weeks leading up to it, I couldn't help but be hyped (though I was trying to stop myself); it exceed my hype expectations, making it my favorite Trek film.
Super Mario Galaxy: I watched this video on a daily basis for over a year. Oh my god, it exceed all my expectations, and even made me cry; Rosie is truly the Mario of this game series! It still pains me that the sequel failed to deliver in every way.

Dragon Quest VIII. I had been anticipating the release of the game for months and actually imported it and it was everything I thought it could be and then some. I am currently replaying through it now.
Donkey Kong Country also ranks up there.
For off-topic, I would say the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. I thought John Oliver did okay on the Daily Show during the time Jon Stewart was away but little did I know how great his HBO show would actually be.
